Hi,

This is quite a difficult choice - both songs from different ends of the decade of the sixties - one a ballad, one a country r&b number.

I think I gotta go for - "The U.S. Male...that's M-A-L-E, son!"

Cheers,

If you had said Indescribably Blue (I mention that because when I read this it first registered in my mind as that song), that would have added more difficulty to my decision. But U.S. Male still would have come out on top.

It's a fun song, not to be taken seriously...overcharged good-humoredly with testosterone. Not many Elvis songs quite like that.

Hi Geordie,

Looks like 'U.S. Male' is the winner of the first two songs!

'No More' or 'Angel'?...Another quite difficult choice...

I've got to opt for the big ballad from "Follow That Dream"...'Angel' gets my vote!

I'm a cheater.

I'll say Angel unless I can match it up against the Aloha version of No More. :P

I don't know why people think Elvis sound bored or tired on those post-broadcast songs. I think they are somewhat understated or low-key, but not overly so or to the detriment of the songs. Early Morning Rain in particular sounds perfect with that kind of delivery.

And No More is a beautiful song, sounding much better to my ears in the 70s voice. I wish he had revived Angel then too, though I must say there's not much room for improvement there.

Hi Lonnie,

Now, I've won 2 out of 2 so far with the songs I've voted for, but this is getting more difficult...both from the great "Good Times" album from 1974...hmm...my instincts tell me to go with..."Good Time Charlies Got The Blues" - great number!

Alright, this next one is just for Carolyn:

Just Pretend, with a bottle of wine, or the entire Today album? ;)

OK, seriously--for all:

I'd like to take a slight diversion here and then we'll get back to the one-on-one formula. This time I'd like you to rank the following 5 performances of That's All Right (Mama) from your most to least favorite...

A - Original '54 Sun recording

B - '68 Special - from either sit-down show, whichever you like better

C - TTWII '70 - the first song from opening night

D - Madison Square Garden '72, afternoon or evening performance

E - '77 - Spring Tours '77 (Norman) or Elvis In Concert (Rapid City)

Not trying to make things confusing with the choices within the choices. I just want to make sure that what you see as being the best representation of the song from each time is a choice for you here.

Hey Geordie,

This is truly a sore one - this is gonna hurt!

I love both of these...they are both classics in each of their era's...come to think of it they are both movie songs too, albeit in a somewhat different context...unfortunately, it's time to make my decision....

My vote goes to one of the best and most famous Elvis love songs ever-written...so, I choose the ultimate classic ballad from "Blue Hawaii"...

Yes, 'Can't Help Falling In Love' gets my vote.

My first inclination was to choose IJCHB, but I think part of the reason there is that we've heard CHFIL so many more times. As a result, I've probably lost a little of the deserved appreciation for this song.

The former truly is a fantastic song, and it is a crying shame that on the special edition of That's The Way It Is it isn't featured, except to play over the menu screen.

But CHFIL is the classic that it is for a good reason, and I also really love the movie version and some of the alternate takes that I've heard. And of course, serving as the show closer for over 99% of the performances during the concert years, there were many truly awesome live renditions.

Just based on the merit of the original version though, I cast my vote for CHFIL.

And I have to say that I am surprising myself with that choice!

Oh, by the way, my That's All Right ranking:

1 - '77
2 - '54
3 - '68
4 - '72
5 - '70

can i just mention that i won a talent quest singing 'burning love', and then the sound system blew out, so i had to sing 'i just can't help believin' as loud as i could to 300 people, without ruining it, the judges were very suprised, so i was placed the overall winner. tomorrow i'll be carrying on Elvis's spirit by donating the money from the talent quest to my local hospital on behalf of the organizers of the event

BTW, i'm just listening to 'never ending' now, though the quality is not the best, but i love 'its midnight', nothing beats the studio master!

There are indeed many great live versions of this song. I don't think any I've heard are better than the one found on the FTD named for that standout performance.

rickster
07-08-2005, 12:00 AM
I can see that most of you preferred the choice of 70's ballad there, however both songs were great and i thought it was quite a difficult choice to make, but 'its midnight' won it in the end, this time how about a couple of 70's rockers, 'promised land' v 't.r.o.u.b.l.e., I cant decide between them so I'll settle for a draw on them, let me know what you think, rickster.

elvisdownunder
07-08-2005, 01:20 AM
ooh now this IS a HARD one, 2 AWESOME Elvis rockers, both never fully appreciated by the public. Promised Land is one of the best Chuck Berry covers he did, and it just rocks, especially the guitar work from the great James Burton. but my vote goes to T-R-O-U-B-L-E, i heard this on the radio yesterday and i turned it up for full pleasure, and the vocal work is terific. awesome lyrics(like promised land), but the vocal work like when Elvis growls 'choo choo cha chagga!' is just awesome! the live versions are great also

winner for me: T-R-O-U-B-L-E (HEY HEY! indeed)

BTW, Geordie. thank you, and i hope you are ok from these London bombings, my prayers to you and your country

My winner is PROMISED LAND!

NEA
07-08-2005, 03:52 AM
Once again we have another difficult choice in this battle of the 70's Rockers. I love 'Promised land' for the verse:

"Swing low chariot, come down easy
Taxi to the Terminal Zone,
Cut your engines and cool your wings,
And let me make it to the telephone."

Plus, James Burton is in finely-tuned form throughout.

But, I think my vote will have to go to the charismatic and catchy
'T-R-O-U-B-L-E'. I love the lyrics to this song and Elvis delivers with such great passion. This is one of the highlights from 1975's 'Today' album. I love the line:

"Looking like glory and walking like a dream!"

Michu, you really think Elvis looks bad in that photo? I think it's a very flattering picture. Though he's a little thick in the body at that time (for the last time wearing a jumpsuit other than the Sundial), his face doesn't show any puffiness in this shot. And it's amazing to me that the Omaha show, in which he looked very puffy and bloated, was the very next night.

By the way I did enhance the pic a little, but that was mainly to brighten it up, make his eyes more visible, and smooth out the graininess of the photo. See comparison below.

Back to the game...

Promised Land wins that last one for me, but not by far. Regarding T-R-O-U-B-L-E, I think the first take as heard on 6363 Sunset is absolutely killer, way better than the master, though including a couple minor vocal miscues.

I think that the original studio mixes which we're going to hear on the Today FTD--anyone have this yet?--are going to be revelatory. I just betcha.

Speaking of the Today album, let me offer a 4 for 1.

1 - Fairytale v. I Can Help

2 - And I Love You So v. Pieces of My Life

3 - Susan When She Tried v. Shake A Hand

4 - Green, Green Grass of Home v. Bringin' It Back

there are some great choices being made here, to answer the first set of questions about the 'today' album, here are mine:

1. I Can Help. A quite simply brilliant cover version of this track.

2. And I Love You So. quite a hard choice this one, but E.I.C. has a great version of this track.

3. Susan When She Tried. no second thoughts about this one.

4. Bringin' It Back. although to be honest there are a couple of great outtake versions of g.g.g.o.h.

last but not least, it has to be the E.I.C. version of 'hurt', if anyone ever doubted elvis vocal in 1977 this track proved all the doubters and critics wrong, a pure masterpiece.

it looks as though this poll could go on forever so how about this for a battle of tracks: 'for the heart' v 'stranger in the crowd'????????

1 - Fairytale v. I Can Help

Fairytale is a song I really dig, though more so the live versions.

2 - And I Love You So v. Pieces of My Life

AILYS is another favorite, but Pieces is a masterpiece.

3 - Susan When She Tried v. Shake A Hand

This one wasn't as difficult a choice.

4 - Green, Green Grass of Home v. Bringin' It Back

My appreciation for BIB grew immensely once I heard the 6363 Sunset outtake, after which I suggested it be released in hopes of getting Elvis another #1 on the country charts (this was during the remix craze). So yeah, I kinda like it.

Hurt(live or studio) VS unchained melody

Extremely difficult choice. With so many live performances of Hurt and various versions of the two officially released performances alone of Unchained Melody, I'm gonna wimp out like elvisdownunder and rick ;) on this one and call it a draw. Those two are simply awesome songs delivered in a way that only Elvis could pull off. Witnessing either in person must have been incredible.

'for the heart' v 'stranger in the crowd'

It's funny how your tastes change; ten years ago I would have answered differently.

I agree completely even though my last choice was a draw for me, I also agree with someone who said it's funny how your tastes change because many moons ago i would have picked 'for the heart' but the older you get the more you appreciate the more mature side that elvis developed in the 70's. Ok let's dump that one and try another(and remember there cannot be a draw between them),

I really cannot do this....I can't choose between these 'Spinout Soundtrack' bonus songs....both of them are immortal in every way!

I think 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' is a little more known generally than 'Down In The Alley' due to Dylan's endorsement of Elvis' version of his song. But, for those that have not heard 'Down In The Alley' - what a great shame!

hi n.e.a., i admire your honesty and i have been put on the spot many times like this before, the hardest question i've been asked ever is: 'what is your all time favourite elvis track?', that is an impossible question to answer and people think i'm backing out when i say there are too many to choose from. Elvis has to this very day a massive back catalogue and it seems near impossible to select one track from hundreds, there are probably people out there who have a particular favourite for a particular reason and that would make an interesting poll just to see the results so your comment is valid enough for me(y) . gonna do something different here but still on the same track, what is your favourite elvis album between 'from elvis in memphis' and 'back in memphis'. that should keep you going for a little while:hmm: :hmm: , look foward to hearing the results, cheers, rickster.

My vote would have to be for I.J.C.H.B., at great track from a great album, how about these 2 to select from,'HOW GREAT THOU ART' v 'YOU GAVE ME A MOUNTAIN', my personal favourite of the 2 would be H.G.T.A., the first version I ever heard of this was from ELVIS IN CONCERT and it just blew me away, the power that Elvis possessed in his voice 1977 was quite stunning, and how great thou art gave him the chance to show that vocally he could still pull out all the stops, mountain is also on e.i.c. and that's a great track also but just not enough for me to select it, ok guys it's over to you................rickster.

i sung 'i just can't help believin' with 'burning love' in a talent quest, i ended up winning the singing section and being the overall winner. before 'i just can't help believin', the whole sound system blew out, but i decided to get a spare cd player, turn it up fairly loud, and then sing as loud as i could without ruining the song. i think everybody was quite impressed

when i sing this song 'i just can't help believin', i truthfully get a little teary eyed, the arrange ment, the beautiful lyrics, and the over all delicacy of the song is just absolutely beautiful. 'i've lost you' is a powerful performance, but 'believin' just has that kind of emotional touch that makes it one of my fave songs.

I CAN'T BELIEVE that I am just now discovering this thread!! You guys and gals have created a FANTASTIC idea here!!! I've had a BLAST reading everyone's posts and their votes for the songs/albums!! And, now that I know this one is here, I'll DEFINITELY have to vote whenever I can!!!

What are you trying to do to me here pal??? Of course the minute I saw this, you know I had to answer it....so let's see... :hmm:

FAIRYTALE v. I CAN HELP - Although I LOVE the live versions of FAIRYTALE, I have to be in just the right mood to enjoy the studio version of it, so I will default and go with I CAN HELP here....it is a ROCKIN' tune!!!

AND I LOVE YOU SO v. PIECES OF MY LIFE - I can clearly see why Elvis wanted to listen to the playback of this song after he recorded it more than 30 times!! This is simply one stunning performance....quite possibly my favorite Elvis ballad of all time!!!

SUSAN WHEN SHE TRIED v. SHAKE A HAND - SUSAN WHEN SHE TRIED is just such a cool song....I can't really describe it, it's just always been one of my favorites from the album! And I LOVE the outtakes of this song that were included on the 6363 SUNSET FTD release!!!

GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME v. BRINGIN' IT BACK - Although they are both beautiful ballads, I have to give the vote to BRINGIN' IT BACK....it's just a well performed song, which flows really well. The melody of the song is a bit unique for Elvis, which I think lends to the increasing popularity of the song amongst fans! This would have been a COOL song for Elvis to have added to his live shows!!

THANKS EVERYONE FOR A VERY ENTERTAINING THREAD!!! (y)

Lonniebealestreet
09-21-2005, 10:51 PM
Love Song of the Year is beautifully sung, but to me it's a kind of strange song lyrically.

Well, then I must acknowledge that Mr. Songman is too. Is it just me or is there a lyrical goof in it from Elvis? I believe the first time he delivers this line, it's:

"Won't you sing me away to a summer night? Let me hold you in my arms again." And he's singing to a jukebox, right? Why does he want to hold the jukebox...or anything he would call 'Mr.'?

The second time he corrects it, singing:

"Won't you sing me away to a summer night? Let me hold her in my arms again." Or am I missing something?

Anyway, my vote goes to Mr. Songman. I wish the song was longer, and it does have that flaw (if I'm right about that), but still I have always liked it a whole lot. The delivery is perfect, or the way Elvis emotes it. He could make just about any song great that way. I love the sound of this song as heard on Stax Trax.

How Great Thou Art (Omaha '77) or Stand By Me

Menwithbrokenhearts

How Great Thou Art

. Hands down. Not only that version but pretty much anyone he did live. I beleive Myrna Smith when she says about him feeling every word when he sang it , about that being Elvis' prayer, his praise to God.

How about
Have I told you lately That I love you,
or
I met her Today

T_J

And No More is a beautiful song, sounding much better to my ears in the 70s voice.

Think I've heard it all now:supriced:  The later performance is bland and lifeless compared to the assured and varied vocal on the original. The former is just technically better singing, whichever way you look at it.
