It's derived from the Nordic, "Alviss", I believe, and it means, "all wise." :king:

Oops!

Wrong adjective on my part. I should have said... NORWEGIAN. (Nordic is of/relating to >> Scandanavia).

I new that elvis stands for all wise in irish, but I never knew that aron had a meaning too. Thanks for the information and it really is a strange coincedence. (Or maybe not.)

Be safe and take care,

On a personal level, I wouldn't call a kid of mine "Elvis". It's FAR too distinctive to have as a child's first name. JMO.

I live in an eastern country,"elvis" name is not that desntictive here, and I,m not sure if naming rules here allow me to register the name in baby,s Id, but I like to call my baby elvis!!!:)

That's cute, naming your kid after Elvis. Maybe this would be considered 'strange' in the western world. But in another part of the world this may simply not be the case.

It's the same thing with the fact that in some parts of the world 'Jesus' is also thought of as being a 'normal' name (so to speak) - while in my country this name isn't in use anymore, in the way that parents don't give their child this particular name (I live in Leipzig, Germany).

In the Middle East there are Elvis fans too - it's cool to read about that. Where do you come from, Misty Morning (what country, specifically?).

In Iran, for instance, Elvis is considered to be a deity - many schoolgirls like his music. Shame in Iran is that singers of romantic songs are in exile because of the ayatollah's actions!

This is what behindthename.com (http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=elvis&nmd=n&gender=both&operator=or) says about 'Elvis':

"Meaning unknown. It is possibly a form of ALVIS (http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=alvis) or ELWIN (http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=elwin) or it might be derived from the surname Elwes. This name was made popular by the singer Elvis Presley.

Alvis means 'all wise' in Old Norse. In Norse mythology this was the name of a dwarf who was to marry Thor's daughter Thrud. Thor was not pleased with this so he tricked Alvis by asking him questions until the sun rose, at which time the dwarf was turned into stone."

I think your letting your preg hormones get the best of you:). Relax while you can, in a few months you won't have the time.

I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, but I really couldn't imagine calling my own child Elvis. I did consider 'Aron' when I was pregnant, but everyone kept telling me I was spelling it wrong, and I thought my child (had it been a boy) would have been correcting the spelling his whole life......but Elvis as a first name.....no......

Can anyone please tell me what,s wrong with calling a baby elvis?! Why are most of you against it?! Afterall we love elvis and we are going to keep his memory alive!!Is it a difference in cultures or do you have other reasons for not calling your babies elvis?!!!:hmm:
( I wish Lisa marie had named her son Elvis, why didn,t she after all?!)

I don't think it's because we love Elvis any less, it's just that it is an unusual name.....The trouble is we give names to our children, and they are the ones that have to live with it for their whole lives. A child named Elvis would have to explain to all and sundry, yes my Mum was/is a big Elvis fan....and there's nothing wrong with that, but what if your child doesn't like Elvis' music...heaven forbid......

The best way to pick out a childs name, is to pick maybe half a dozen that you like, then stand on the back step of your house and yell the names out at the top of your lungs, because that is what you will be doing for the next 10 or maybe more years......the one that sounds ok, is the one to pick.......

That's the very reason why some people do choose to use it, due to the distinction of the name. ELVIS is not unusual at all in the South, especially back in the 20's, 30's and 40's. I have known of several men that were Elvis' age and older that were named Elvis. There is also a little boy in school here in my town that is named Elvis, and yes, he is named after the original.:D:D(y)

I think people tend to have a knee-jerk reaction to it for two reasons. #1~it is automatically associated with Elvis Presley, and #2~it's considered an old-time name that is always associated with the South, and often with people that were considered to be somewhat poor.

Please tell us what you did end up naming your baby!!!:notworthy

well i think its sweet to call your baby elvis and a friend of mine was going to call her baby presley and she changed her mind as the babys dad was not an elvis fan and it did not go down well with hi and as i say if it was good enough for elvis to have that name then its good enough for anyone good luck with the baby

I personally think naming a child "Elvis" would be just fine! (y) It may bring about some social conflicts for the child...depending of course on where you live and how people would react to it. But all in all...I think it an honor to the man that a Mother would want to name her child after him. Not one thing wrong with it, IMO! Elvis was a world-wide phenomenon...the name is synonomous with the entertainer, and justifiably so, but it is not off limits to anyone else either. Do let us know what you have decided on...I am interested to know.

Hugs,
Lea

well i have heard the celebs call there kids all sorts apple, peaches, princes tiamii, pilot so elvis is not that much of a crazy name but no one in my town is called elvis and i have never met anyone called elvis so it would be a talking point in my town but at least you would be named after a true legend and not a pice of fruit or objects around the home my name is laura and i still get called flora after the butter no matter what name you have people can make fun of you but usually is all good

In this day & age, anything goes - obviously. Elvis is a perfectly good name and while it's very unusual, it's been done - the skater Elvis Stojko comes to mind. Even Elvis got some raised eyebrows for his unusual name. But face it, no matter what you name your child, someone will find a way to make fun of it. My daughter Sara was called Sahara all through 3rd grade. She finally learned to laugh along and it quit!

I don't see anything wrong with naming your child "Elvis" It probably depends on where you're from. Here in Manila, it's not an unusual name and is very much associated with Elvis Presley. I never considered naming any of my 2 boys "Elvis" though I'm a huge fan because of it's strong association the man. I've seen some boys named "Elvis" and they get teased sometime to sing or dance or just make fun of the name, you know, the way kids do if they're playmate is named after a movie star.
