No, that poll should go to someone that invented some important medicine. Artist and performers are important too, but can never be the greatest compared to people who saved many lives.
Must wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.

EP made a lot of people happy (and still does), & that's great ......... but, let's not lose all perspective here folks.

I have to agree as well. I don't think Elvis would want us to vote for him either.

i voted for Martin Luther King
I voted for Elvis a couple of times. But I agree that the once who invented, for exsample , medicine should get credit too. Afterall the medical world wouldn't be what it is now. But in a way Elvis is medicine too. He helped (and still does) many people through his songs and his appearance. Many miracelous stories have been told about this issue.
Be safe and take care,

Absolutely(y)
Elvis deserves to get top vote in a poll about "Greatest Entertainer" or "Most lasting cultural icon", but greatest American, sorry, no.

I agree with the above statements....BUT....Elvis invented too...He Invented entertainment as it is today!!!
He gives people lots of happiness by listening to his songs (it works as a medicine)
And when you say Elvis you say America...If you say America yu'll say Elvis!
SO YES there are more enough reasons to say ELVIS WAS IS WILL BE THE GREATEST AMERICAN ever! I M O
The only reason that I went over to Amerca is Elvis...Maybe Elvis did not cure people his songs do!:notworthy
Praise The King..(and I don't mean Martin Luther;-)

Generally speaking (ie: this remark is not directed against "Elvos"):
Ironically, EP, in reality, would have been repulsed by this statement (& some other sentiments on this thread) on multiple levels.
(FACT: EP generally did not take well to remarks OR gifts that gave the implication or referred to him as "KING.").

As for "TCE'ing", well ................. I suppose we all do that in our own way(s).

I'm not going to vote! i'm getting a little "vote" tired these days. Why do we fans always want to elvis to be the best in everything? let us just feel lucky enough that his estate en his record company gives us so much material these days. i think there isno artist inthese days that releases at the same level as elvis does, we can hardly keep up.
i think when they slowed down a bit the quality standard is even higher than it is now...

I'm as big an Elvis fan as the next person. Elvis was a great person with many fine qualities and there's no doubt he loved America. But the greatest American? No. Greatest American entertainer? Yes. Greatest American? Hmmm. These names come immediately to my mind:
George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
Abraham Lincoln
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
