Look up "underrated" in the dictionary and the words to "They Remind Me Too Much Of You" should be printed.
Incredible song and performance - especially take one. One of his best ballads.

love that nashville cat. I also always loved "I Met Her Today". The vocals with The Jordanaires don't get much better than that. Also, "Never Ending", great strong vocal and beautiful acoustic guitar.

I think some very underrated songs would be 1975's T-r-o-u-b-l-e and 1976's For the heart both of these songs should have soared up the charts!!!!:)

What a GREAT question ph10579!!! Of course, I could literally be here all night creating my list, but here are just a couple for now...
* LOVE COMING DOWN (great underrated ballad from the Jungle Room Sessions)
* FOOLS FALL IN LOVE (just a great, funky song...I've always loved this one!)
* IT'S EASY FOR YOU (should have been a single....the way he phrases the words of this song is simply incredible!!! He sounds like he has lived EVERY WORD of this song, and it truly comes through in his performance!)
Those are just a couple I could think of right off the top of my head!! But give me time and I am sure I will be re-visiting this thread soon AND often!!! ;)

the first one that comes to my mind is 'just pretend', this is just one of the best ballads Elvis EVER done. he puts his heart and soul into it, and his voice is terrific
also hurt should've been better than it was, the cymbal clash and piano at the start and Elvis's voice bellowing 'iiiiiiiiiiiiiim! sooooooooooooooo huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurt!!! is a number one in its self, and the climaxes and the feeling poured from the song is just a classic!

I wholeheartedly agree with the choice of "Just Pretend" - what a perfect song for Elvis. It's a ballad with kind of a soulful, gospel feel that is so unique to Elvis, especially in the early 70's. The live 1970 versions were even better.
Another song in this same vein I would add is "Where Did They Go, Lord". Amazing.

Yes!WHERE DID THEY GO is superb!!!In my opinion there is many songs that Elvis should have got a Grammy Award for!!!I tell you:we will never hear voice like that again!

I think "The Girl I Never Loved" is one of the most underrated Elvis songs, it is often considered as a usual movie song, but I think it's far better - one of his best movie ballads.(y)
I also think "(It's A) Long Lonely Highway" is underrated, the same goes for "That's When Your Heartaches Begin", "Where Did They Go, Lord?" (as mentioned above), "She Thinks I Still Care" and "There's A Honky Tonk Angel (Who'll Take Back In)". Elvis' version of the latter is in my opinion far better than Conway Twitty's, although I really like Conway Twitty. It's a great song and a stunning performance by Elvis.
Some of the many underrated Elvis songs I like are
TROUBLE
I Gotta Thing About You, Baby
Just Pretend
Good Time Charlie
Talk about the Good Times
All should have been hits!

Most of the songs that I feel are underrated have already been listed. I do not think many of the songs mentioned are underated by most fans:songs like " Suspicion" .. or "Stranger in my home town" it is just that they were not major hits in comparison.
A coupe of other tracks that I feel have not got the attention of many fans are " What now what next where to" - "Gently " " Love me tonight" and " I really dont want to know"

i just bought the 'today, tomorrow, and forever' boxset and the song that caught my attention was 'gonna get back home somehow'. what an awesome song! that funky saxophone and beat! and Elvis's vocal performance! so:cool: . i can just imagine a remix for this song
come what may is a good song too, and the single of 'love letters/come what may' should've done better than number 19.
'indescribably blue', one of Elvis's finest performances. another that should've done better
where do i go from here, a cool song. if it'd been longer, it'd be better

So many songs to choose from! I will try to pick songs from various parts of his career.
Sun Years: Good Rocking Tonight (seems to be forgotten lately)
Early RCA : Treat Me Nice (single version overshadowed by Jailhouse Rock)
Early Sixties : Anything That's Part Of You (Makes you want to cry)
Movie Years : It's A Wonderful World (Actually was considered for an Oscar in preselection!)
Late Sixties : Indescribably Blue (also makes you want to cry!)
American Studios : Inherit The Wind (Great Feeling - Hear him breath and give life to the song)
Early Seventies : Stranger In The Crowd (Just Superb)
Late Seventies : Susan When She Tried (Best Country recording) By the way the Today album is one of my favourites. Can't wait for the FTD release.
Live Recordings : My Way (from the Elvis In Concert album. Just sums it up...)
Many thanks to those that share my taste as many of those songs were posted before!

It's funny after reading most of this thread that most songs are from the 70's!?, and it really reflects the topic title, cause most or even all 70's songs are underrated by the general public , even by the fans back in the 70's, cause if they liked the songs so much back in the days why didn't the songs charted higher on the billboard top 100?
I think the main reason for that is/was that Elvis was more a live entertainer in the 70's than a recording artist, also didn't need a number 1 hit, to get a sold out concert tour, only his name was good enough for sold out concerts, that's also maybe the problem for his recording work...it was fun to go the concerts ....but the press made fun of him for his recording work, at least that's the picture i get after all those years of watching videos en reading books. But the most funny thing is that now in 2005 we treasure him for his recording work! look what happend in the UK, all his singles were top 5 hits!! even here in Holland all singles made the top100, some of them even were getting in the official top 40! and that's really good, cause people don't buysingles anymore, they download them. But to get back to the subject....i think all his 70's material is underrated. And that's a shame cause he really recorded some jewels in that decade. But we can't rewrite history..

(1) Fifties recording – “Young and Beautiful”
One of the finest Elvis ballads from the fifties rock era. Unlike the universally popular “Love Me Tender”, however, it had to compete with the groundbreaking "Jailhouse Rock" on its featured soundtrack and missed out on a single release.
(2) Sixties Recording – “Edge of Reality”
Outstanding albeit neglected B Side to the comeback single “If I Can Dream”. The one place it was given a chance as an A side was in Australia - it went to #1.
(3) Seventies Recording – “Talk About the Good Times”
A rare occasion in the later part of Elvis’ career when he really cut loose on a rock (albeit country rock) recording. Unfortunately it got lost in the predominately down beat songs that made up the most inappropriately titled album of his career – “Good Times”.
(4) Gospel recording – “Let Us Pray”
A hip sixties Gospel rock number complete with funky female backing vocals that was even disregarded from inclusion in the fifty odd tracks that made up the otherwise excellent “Amazing Grace” –Greatest Sacred Performances”.
(5) Rock and roll recording – “Got a Lot of Living to do”
Contains absolutely everything that was the spirit of fifties rock and could have easily have been a #1 hit – just never got the chance.
(6) Folk Recordings (s) - “Early Mornin’ Rain” and (That’s What You Get) For Lovin’ Me”
Remain in the shadows of the praises always heaped on Elvis’ covers of Dylan’s “Tomorrow is a Long time” and “Don’t Think Twice”.
(7) Blues Recording(s) – “All I Needed was the Rain” and “Hard Luck”
Fine examples of Elvis showing his mastery of the Blues genre. Seemingly ignored because they both appeared in Elvis movies.
(8) Easy Listening Recording – “It’s Impossible”
No one has noticed that no one has come close to Elvis’ rendition of this easy listening classic.
