View Full Version : Wow! Is this the future of Elvis The Concert? (the 2pac hologram)

Last night, dead rap legend Tupac Shakur came back to life through modern day technology as he literally performed a duet with Snoop Dog live on stage via hologram. You have to see it to believe it. I'm wondering, no, I'm betting that this is EPE's next big thing with the Elvis-The Concert show. At least, it should be. (y)

As cool as that would be, turning all of the concert footage necessary into holograms for a full-length concert would certainly be a VERY expensive project I imagine... :hmm:
Just imagine how much EPE would charge for tickets to THAT show!!! (n)
I'm not saying that it couldn't happen, or that I wouldn't LOVE to see it happen...it just seems to me that it will be a pretty cost-prohibitive show to produce...

It was pretty impressive, some parts slightly choppy looking like an old silent movie but impressive.
But I must agree with you Mike an entire concert would be very very expensive not too mention we do not know how long it took to make this hologram.
I recall a few years back a You Tube video of a 3D Elvis which lasted about 2 minutes and if I remember correctly it took the author of the project over 2 years to digitally construct this 2 minutes.
Luckily people are constantly working for quicker and better ways to do these things with computers-but still 2 minutes took 2 years to complete.

Wow I wish Elvis would have recorded that song. :lmfao: Absolutely terrible.
This is the song they did a few years ago with Elvis on American Idol, it did take months for them to do this small part.

Here is the 3D Elvis from a few years ago-less than a minute long-took 2 years.

That is cool way to show Elvis but I would rather see a live show with a hologram like the American Idol clip. It would be nice if they did that for a video game or like a movie.

I remember seeing that. If it really took the person who made that 3-D Elvis video a whole 2 years then he didn't know much about what he was doing. A professional with knowledge of 3D designing would have done it in weeks. But as for the Tupac hologram and the cost, I don't think it was all that expensive. Here's a link to an article mentioning and showing other hologram performances including Elvis and Celine from American Idol. http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/328775/20120417/tupac-shakur-2pac-hologram-coachella-alive-musicians.htm

Well maybe they couldnt afford to bring elvis back for a full lenghty concert, but they could do it for like 2 songs, Imagen elvis hologram coming up during sweet sweet spirit, and remains for how great thou art.

They didn't turn existing footage into a hologram, but motion captured another person and turned that with CGI (computers) into 2Pac. So it's a computer animation, just like Gollum from Lord Of The Rings. It obviously looked nice during that low-light show, but you shouldn't expect close-ups shown on big screens behind the hologram artist. That's because then you can easily see that it's not the real artist, but a computer version.
The idea that somebody is pretending to be Elvis, being motion captured, converted into a 3D model and then turned into a Elvis lookalike computer figure.
I have to admit that the technique to re-create real life looking computer animated humans has improved insanely over the years. But it still extremely difficult to put 'soul' into the computer generated eyes.

Now that you have explained how it was done I agree with you totally, the idea of someone pretending to be Elvis in movement and walk, then having CGI add Elvis's face onto the body seems years away. (and I'm not sure of how much ELVIS you would get)
One of my complaints about so much computer generated images is that it seems to blend in action sequences, but any sequence in which close-ups of facial expressions are shown gives it away quickly, even quick glances of a face can tell you its CGI.
Soul is what makes us human-and you are correct that is lacking up till now in computer generated eyes.

Yes Diane!
Definitely, if I had seen only a hologram.
For now, perhaps we do not have any other choice.
In one such, such a great phenomenon that is Elvis, the soul is the most important.
The soul of the artist. His look. Personally I am scared this plastic 'Elvis'.

I agree with you, Albert. The eyes (actually, what they should be seen, the soul) are far beyond the technical possibilities.
Comparison of Elvis for Gollum ... Hmm, is risky.Eyes Elvis we know and we love what we see in they .
Gollum is the essence with 'beautiful' sad eyes but he is strangers . However, these are artificial, cold eyes.
Elvis's eyes are like an open window to his soul!

I just feel that some day there will be technology that will allow a whole show of Elvis to be a hologram. I could see watching the Aloha show as a hologram. To see Elvis walking and singing on stage with the band playing behind him would be the coolest thing. I think this type of hologram is just a few years away.

Viva,
I'm not sure if you are thinking of the same type of hologram that I am. I'm not thinking of the Tupac show that is like a game character, that’s not even him. The American Idol clip that they did is what I'm talking about, that is pure Elvis. That's why I was thinking of like Aloha, 68 special and TTWIS shows. To do the hologram that I would want to see, Elvis would have needed to been filmed.
I could see Elvis on the 68 special, sitting on the stage with the "live" crew around him. So the image you see is actually Elvis, not just a "game like character" on the stage.

it a wasn't Hologram my fellow Elvis fans. In hologram's you see lights beaming to comprise the image and it's in my opinion very taboo to mess with dead souls this way. Elvis deserves to Rest In Peace. Not only is this another form of making tons of money but also mastering the art of deception. Now that "Seeing is Believing" in how things work, it's time to unleash the "Seeing is Not Believing" campaign.
This combination of high-quality computer rendering and old-school optical trickery dated as far back as the 1600's with illusionist from that time era.
Here's how they did it : http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/...tical-illusion
I agree there is some making money scheme but I believe this is a way to introduce Elvis to new fans. By using the footage when Elvis looks his best, will show people what a great artist and entertainer he was. Also it gives people like me who were not alive in the Elvis era to see the closest thing to an Elvis show.

You could probably never get a true hologram show because in order to do so you have to have filmed the person from many angles at the same time so that as a person moves, turns, sits, jumps etc.......the holographic images from all angles make it appear that a real person has seemlessly moved, turned, sit etc......
I do not pretend to understand the technology and no one else here probably does either but I do know Elvis was not filmed 360 degrees for each song and that he was not filmed by the technology that is required to do true holograms.
Now technology has away of morphing-and perhaps they will come up with away to do it cheaper, easier, using existing filmed footage from old fashion film technology........
I still would not be in favor of someone trying to walk, move, gyrate, perform as Elvis and then through computer trickery morph Elvis's face onto that body-you no longer have Elvis-you have an imitator who tries to mimic Elvis with a computer face.

Well unfortunately it was not all Elvis, the shots of Dion and Elvis walking out from the back, the long side shots of them together and certain angled shots were a guy in an identical suit who came on with her.
But you are correct that the shots of them singing together from the front where the faces were clearly visible were all Elvis from 68.
It was a neat mix of lookalike, actual filmed footage and live singing which gave a great illusion of Elvis being on stage to tv viewers.

Yes I am not into someone mimicking Elvis either. I want it to be 100% Elvis. You are right about there is not 360 degrees of Elvis that was filmed all the time, I just think of all the footage out there mainly 68 special were he is sitting in the seat the whole time, that might be the easiest to use. Some of the other shows like Aloha there are long camera angles that they might be able to use to create Elvis on stage.

You see would Elvis have dueted with Justin Beiber? I could see him dueting with some of the females singers used on the Christmas Duets, I could invision him singing with Tom Jones, Bruce Springstein, Neil Diamond, Chuck Berry (maybe Chuck would not want to duet with Elvis though)
Fats Domino etc....but newer stars I would think they would have to lean toward Elvis's tastes in music for him to want to duet with them.
If its just an exercise in placing Elvis on the same stage with new artists like-GULP-Beiber I guess then you would want Beiber involved as long as he is hot.

You are right KPM, I believe Elvis would probably sing with a female artist more than a male artist. I could see him singing with Celine Dion the most.
Part of an article explaining how they did the Elvis/Dion duet...it was not a hologram.
................. Actually, it was a combination of technologies, although not, as some people speculated, a hologram.
First, “Dion spent hours on the stage singing her part of the song several times without an audience or anyone next to her, looking to her side on cue,” Good Morning America reports.
She then performed “with a Presley body double who lip-synced Presley’s song and matched his moves from his 1968 performance.” Those were digitally merged with Elvis’ performance “through editing and a technique called rotoscoping, which traced Presley from the original footage by cutting him out.”
Disney’s Joe Husung tells GMA, “Rotoscoping allows you to take one image from a pre-existing piece of video and puts him a whole new environment — completely new use of that same piece of video.”
Reuters poll on who should next be brought back in hologram performances (even though the technology used is not really a hologram)
Shows Ray Charles with 100 votes, Elvis 99 votes. Johnny Cash 99 votes.........Statistically tied.
Micheal Jackson surprisingly did not even make the top 10......

I saw on Elvismatters that she said it wasn't for her. I'm in two minds about it really.....but I can see where she's coming from though
The premise of Lisa singing with the illusion used for the Tupac appearance would more likely be very painful and probably false feeling to her.
I can see that point. But once again this is probably a no win for her-if she would agree to add the illusion of a song or 2 with her dad while on tour-half the Elvis fans would say-
"Shes doing it to jack up prices and attendance for her tour"
If she says its not something she wants to do other fans will say-
Why does she diss her fathers by not wanting to sing with him"
No win.

The dilemma would be the price tag of Elvis hologram concert will be, ... I heard on the Today Show news that they are considering having Beatles hologram and Elvis in the future, To be really honest IMO I love the Elvis Lives Show the way it is, I went to one :) and i still remembered the feeling out of it, something which i will recall dearly, although i do always wants to see him in person, but the concert EPE has been doing do the justice and it feels like Elvis was there . So yeah to me... what it is still GREAT.
