Country singer Loretta Lynn said she had never met Elvis Presley but had talked to him about collaborating on a music project. They had planned to start working together in early September 1977.

Presley died three weeks earlier, on Aug. 16.

“We were ready to do it. I was on the road when he passed away,” she said.

Lynn recalled her last telephone conversation with Presley.

“He was just a plain old country boy, as country as I am, and that’s pretty bad,” she said, laughing.

I don't know about this. I just don't think Elvis would have done a duet. Would the Colonel even allow it? I doubt that this would have made Elvis excited about recording again. I can't picture Elvis sitting around at Graceland listening to Loretta Lynn.

Elvis was such a nice guy that he probably just didn't want to hurt her feelings. It would be nice to ask the MM if he talked to her on the phone. As everyone here knows Elvis didn't answer the phone or make a call without someone dialing the number for him. So they would know I'm sure.

This isn't true. It's just another one of those "it's my story vs his, oh wait, he's no longer around to dispel it" type of stories. If this were true, GK would be all over it talking about how Loretta and Elvis were scheduled to go into a studio to cut a song together.

If Loretta Lynn did in fact state this, why would it be so incredulous? I have listened to Loretta Lynn over the years and I haven't found any reason to think she embelishes the truth. Besides, asking a member of the mm to be the arbiter of the truth, is not the most prudent decision. On various topics ,their storeis have conflicted amongst each other over the years. I could very well be wrong but why not give Loretta Lynn the benefit of the doubt?

I just like to say that regardless this is true or not, that could have actually been wonderful!

it's like if all the people who claimed that they were "supposed" to have hung out with Sharon Tate that night had been there

there would have been no room for the Mansons on the property

That's true, but that is when you have to consider the source of the information. In any case , as raisedonrock stated, it certainly would have made for an entertaining colaboration :)

Loretta Lynn is a solid name in her area, a country legend, so I don't see in her any need to make up stories like that to build up any fame, so I tend to believe her. So... it is Elvis at that point the guy that was hard to believe in. Due to Elvis state of mind at that point, and the state of affairs between him and the Coloner, this could have been another: yes yes I will do it, letting Loretta to think it will be happening, but only to be followed by a sorry no, no, tell them we won't, if he had lived, as it happened with the A Star Is Born Proyect.

Anyhow, again, at that point, considering the way he was aproaching country songs at the Today Sessions and the Jungle Room Sessions, and that it was in the country charts where he was still having No.1 singles and albums, a duet with Elvis and Loreta would have been A KILLER!!!

I would have loved Elvis to live longer enough to be part of the country duets fever in the late 70's and early 80's doing Willie Nelson and Jerry Lee Lewis... day dreaming.

P.S. Could you believe that she's still touring and making records? she's same age as Elvis, so stuff like that make's me think our man might still be active if he had get himself together.

I have always liked Loretta, I have heard her talk about this before. I can not say she would intentionally lie-but I would like to hear more about how she ended up talking with Elvis, and when it supposedly happened. If she talked with him in Vegas perhaps he did say maybe we could do something-to not hurt her feelings. But lets face it, Parker had not allowed a duet to be done outside the films and Elvis would have had to sell him on the idea. I always loved her duets with Conway Twitty so a duet with Elvis would have been special.

For sure that would have been awsome.

And yes as you say, I don't think she might be lying but sounds more like Elvis telling yes at heat of the moment, but knowing it won't be happening. But, from Loretta point of view, and not really knowing Elvis/Parker way of making bussiness, that yes we could do something, was an actuall it will be happening, as there was no further time to probe her wrong.
