Just read yourself. I don't know how old this article is and if you guys already know about it, but I am really speechless. I think that Lacker guy only wants to get money through allegedly happened Elvis stories.
Edit:
Ok I just got info from Marty himself that he sold the story as pure fiction but the newspaper made it look like it was real.

That is how ridiculous stories get started in the first place...he should have never told a "pure fiction" story like that in the first place. Marty is smart enough to know how press reporters and tabloids can take something and run with it. (n)

It's already been said that the story has been twisted around by this particular writer to make it look like they think Elvis faked his death. Billy was there at the funeral and was a pallbearer. Marty wrestled with wanting to go but decided to stay home because he didn't want to see Elvis in the casket nor see him being interred - plus, when she heard the news, his then-wife, Patsy Lacker, had a nervous breakdown so....he stayed home and watched the whole thing on television just like everyone else.

This is tabloid journalism at its worst-Lacker and Billy have written or helped write several books, and in none of those "on the record books"
do they make any such claims. Someone twisted a few tidbits to make this story sound on level.
Why people constantly try to raise the issue of Elvis being alive, Elvis faking his death is totally beyond reason.
NO truth to this!

Actually Marty and Billy both told that story. It's in Rev.of MM. No idea which came first; the tabloid or Nashs book.In my opinion, it wasn't funny either time. (n)

I guess some people will never believe Elvis died. I've heard it so long it's beginning to aggrevate me. In my opinion, he's gone. Do I wish he was still here? Of course . But, until someone can offer proof positive I think he deserves to RIP. I won't allow Marty and Billy to forget their part in this though. There's a lot that's not true that's been published about Elvis. Just enjoy his music, that's real.

Someone pointed these out to me the other day. Knowing a few people from Memphis, these are the ones people should listen to. I got a kick out of listening to them. ;)

Thanks for sharing, really interesting to hear the story from news reporters that actually brought the news in '77

You're welcome ,Albert. A little different than some of the stories I've heard. ;)
Their accent reminded me of the early years when Elvis did his first interviews.
It was pretty neat to hear that Mrmphis did give Elvis his privacy too. I guess they were used
to all the crazy stories that went around then.Wish we could hear more from them.

Jeanine,
Wrong, my friend. I believe that Billy loved Elvis too much to spread lies about him - although, I believe that some of the things that were mentioned in "Revelations From The Memphis Mafia (especially by Lamar) did NOT need to be said. Neither one of them ever claimed in EAP: RFTMM that Elvis ever faked his death. The ONLY time that they mentioned anything of the sort was when they said that Elvis was fooling around with the idea of "switching roles" with someone who was terminally ill and have that person die and Elvis could just go off somewhere else and be by himself. But, naturally, when they went out of the gate one night at Graceland, no one noticed Elvis and they drove back through the gate and the fans finally recognized him and he was happy. Billy Smith's exact words to him were, "Yeah, you really want to get away from it all, don't you?"
In other words, the story is a complete and utter and silly fabrication - there is no truth to it whatsoever. This sounds like something that a writer like Steve Dunleavy would write - but it's not truth. Elvis is gone.

I never said this was a true story that Marty and Billy told. It IS however in the book ; Rev. of the MM.It wasn't funny then and it's NOT funny now. They should weigh their words before speaking if they don't want asked about them. Look it up !!They told it so they own it.

This is so stupid. Why would they tell this story? There is nowhere on this earth Elvis could go and no one not reconize him. This is just like Linky and Dinky. Anyone ever heard of them? They claimed they got Elvis's fingerprints from a gift shop and ran it and it came back as John Burrows and even found the address. They claimed that they went to his house and talked to him but didn't bring a camera or tape recorder. If you are tracking down Elvis and found his address, wouldn't you take a camera for proof? These nut jobs expect us to just take their word for it. Elvis died August of '77. people need to learn to accept that and move on

Honestly, I don't really care what people believe. It just aggravates me when his "best friends" tells these things and then whine about it because some are foolish enough to believe the story. And then try to blame the fans. They need to deal with it or shut their mouths .
I think that since this was in a tabloid rag-that does not make it assured as word for word from the mouths of these guys.
The tabloids are not known for truth-they may have taken the premise that Elvis had mentioned it might be nice to get aways from the life he led by perhaps switching places with someone-and a tabloid ran with it ...... giving Lacker and Smith as witnesses.
It would not be the first time, and it won't be the last.
Elvis also said he would like to go on Laugh In and ride the tricycle with the yellow raincoat on then fall over....get up and smile into the camera...but he never did it!
We all at one time or another voice some outlandish idea that we know we will never do, he was no different.

Most people would not pay attention to a Tabloid story. It was Alana Nash book that gave it any credibility.
Very early interview with Elvis where he sounds a lot like the reporters from Memphis.
Miss the people, I need to get back there again. :D

No one claims he switched places with anyone-they claim he talked about it once, most people talk of something in frustration with no real intention to do what they say......Elvis talked about many things but that does not validate the premise of his discussions, that does not make it a fact.
They mentioned he it,but did not say yes that is what he did and he crafted out and executed the plan.
.. a tabloid ran with it.
I admit sometimes it might be better to not mention every single tidbit in relation to a second party, but if you censor yourself too much in life-you are not giving an accurate account of times, places, people and circumstances that you have seen or witnessed.
Lets face it-there are people who eat this type of story up, regardless of the real intent in Elvis's heart the most off hand remark uttered to another by him-becomes a whole cottage industry of discussion and profit.
If Lacker and Smith had really pushed the idea whole hog that would be different-but thats really not the case here. IMO

I guess almost 20 years after Elvis died they didn't realize how crazy everyone was to know everything about him?

No- they understand fine I'm sure or why write the books and make the money but perhaps they have not learned well enough how telling a simple "first person I was there story" can get taken to the heights some will take them. What was an off hand remark becomes "HE DID IT"
I am not defending these guys for the writing of their books and money making endeavors in Elvis' name (although Billy surely should be given some leeway-since he was agreeably one of the closest people to Elvis on earth) I am saying alot gets blown out of proportion from people who want to make money or others.
Billy has never out and out said-Elvis seriously considered carrying out this scheme so its not an issue for me.
If Billy in every interview or written interview was pounding the point, then that would be different-it was just a story Billy related about something Elvis pondered on a day he was probably sick of it all....come on we've all been there in our lives.....expressing outlandish things to help with the frustration of the moment.
The frustration for me is that so much can end up being a controversy that would not be such, if we were not talkiing about Elvis.

I get your point and yes I've gotten aggravated with how people jump on something that was said. Just saying, they have no right to get mad and blame the fans .{which I've see a couple do} They said it; kidding or not. They need to go back to the authors of the paper and the book. I seldom say outlandish things-- I just get mad , say what I have to say and then never talk to them again.
