Oh great! Another weak '77 show. Ernst must be obsessed with that period as he focuses on the end then he ever does the better greater period of live performances from 72-74. All the shows in their vaults and he picks this one. I'm beginning to lose faith in the FTD label. It's releases are getting weaker and weaker each time.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on this one. :supriced:
So far, with this concert, we have no audio, photo's, nothing.
FTD is a collector's label, Ernst is doing exactly what he set out to do, document every tour, engagement that he can, with the tapes he has to put out.
And as far as the weak comments go, there are many good shows from the later years, plus with no evidence from this show, theres no way you can already rule it out as a weak one.:hmm:

You say you are 21 (according to the collecting thread) so I can understand you not knowing how bad some of those 76 and 77 shows actually were. Only a handful of shows from the final 12 months are worthy of being publicized. And those bad shows ARE being publicized because they are sold publicly at Graceland. The majority of visitors there are not too far from your age group. One listen to Unchained Melody (the FTD 77 show) and it could turn a up and coming fan off fast. The only worthy shows from '77 would be the Rapid City concert from June 21 (which was subpar at best) and the Indianapolis concert only because it was his last ever. The others could be erased for all I care.
Ernst has NOT covered all the tours as he planned. His focuse has been mostly on 76 and 77. It's as if he wants the worst of Elvis to be out there. I don't get that when he's said to be the guru of Elvis music.:hmm:

If the tapes are there, he wants to cover each tour and engagement, thats always been known. Some tours, he may only have 1 concert, its not his fault Elvis was having an off night on a release like New Haven '76 etc.
He is only doing what he said he was going to do. It's a brand new show for crying out loud, and Elvis has been gone for 34 years and yet people still complain.
And as for only a handful of shows being good from the last 2 years, then you apparently haven't heard many. Listen to the Chicago shows, Ann Arbor, Cincinatti, Tahoe 1976, October'76 etc the list goes on and on.
I personally am happy that we are getting new stuff, because it will only last so long before FTD does fold, then we'll get to enjoy these gems.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with you completely. Yes there are some not so perfect performances throughout that period, but there's still some real gems in there. It's just a matter of opinion, I suppose. I love them ALL! No matter what. Elvis was a human being and no matter what his health situation his voice always held up through the years. Besides, the FTD label is geared toward hardcore avid Elvis fans that are interested in collecting everything Elvis did... good or bad. That's the way I see it and that's why I choose to invest in all the projects they've released.
Yes they're being released to the public at Graceland, but honestly, a lot of 'new' fans aren't going to buy that particular product. Think about it. They only care about the "Greatest Hits" collections. The stuff they're familiar with. They're not going to buy most of the FTD stuff unless they're really enthralled with Elvis.
So, bring it on! All of it. Good or bad!

You always have that vote not buy it, so I think that its great that FTD is really finally going to cover the 77 year. We have a lot of stuff from 76 (which some of it is truly excellent - I recently got Rocking Across Texas with Fort Worth show and I was really suprised by quality of the show - I like it even more than Memphis 76 show, legendary December 76 shows dont even need to be commented :)), but 77 was not covered yet properly.
Tracklist of Amarilo show is probably incomplete recording (I read a review which mentioned Love Me Tender not included in this showtracklist, but only as bonus probably from other show), so I think that it was maked up by selection of bonus songs probably from same tour - and I have to admit that it looks like real gems! Steamroller Blues probably from Austin 77, Bossom Of Abraham / You d Better Run, How Great Thou Art which was almost always high point of his shows (even on his worst shows like Omaha), Trying To Get To You - again fantastic vote, because this track always got deserved attention by Elvis - it was always sung with full concentration...
Rehearsals? I think that in fact its greatest thing that can ever be released. For me, I dont like outtake albums - I always think that each singer knows why this take is master and why the other takes are worse and should not be released (originally).... But rehearsals? Itīs like to be a fly in rehearsal studio to hear singer to work just naturally (not so serious as during usual recording) and on this stuff you usually can see / hear the genius in work. To be honest - for me, most important part of Thatīs The Way It Is is not just the show, but the rehearsal footage! Thatīs that DIAMOND in it - for me of course.
So rehearsal stuff and Amarilo show both for me are must have stuff!

Out of all of those potential dates and better performances, Ernst picks a show from '77. (n)
Once again, Ernst has yet to cover this tour from '77, so what is the problem?
And what makes you so sure that list is 100 percent accurate.
Are you not happy that after all these years we are getting a brand new show?:hmm:

Well consideirng the fact that it's been almost 35 years since he passed and those recordings have yet to be released in favor of the lesser appealing and weaker shows from his worst year of his life, then NO, I am NOT happy and I am willing to bet that I won't be the last to criticize Ernst for this.

Would you not perfer the shows from the later years be released, then not released at all.
Or he could release the other years first, then save 76' and '77 for last. Yeah right?

Yes, it would have drawn more interest in his overall live catalog, imho. I understand you and a few others are fans of that last year. And I am not knocking you for that. I am upset with Ernst always focusing on the least instead of the most. Elvis fans have praised this guy for his so called "handling" of the catalog. But truth be told, it could have been handled a lot better. Starting with the mastering and remixing of tracks. For years he allow for poor audio sound and now has to go back and have professionals to remaster it all over. I'm just not on the Ernst love train as some others are.

Last Memphis show already released. So this tour is already covered and previous shows are not so different to Memphis show. Only show which I would think that would be goot to be released is Houston Astrodome - but itīs not listed here. Very strange, because it was already released on bootleg, so tape must exist somewhere.

07/18/75 Cleveland, OH
This show is would be very interesting, so maybe we will get it soon. But 1975 is already covered very good.
03/17/76 Johnson City, TN
03/20/76 Charlotte, NC
03/21/76 Cincinnati, OH
03/22/76 Sl Louis. MO
I know that tapes of this tour are probably one of the best - soundwise. These shows are even more interesting because of new band, BUT we all wanted to get break from 1976 shows, so Iīm almost sure, that we will get Cincinnati show with bonuses from other shows, we just have to wait.

11/27/76 Eugene, OR
11/28/76 San Francisco. CA
11/29/76 San Francisco, CA
These shows are rated as very good, so I hope that maybe sometime we will get a release, depending on sound quality. San Francisco shows were very good AFAIK.
12/27/76 Wichita, KS
12/28/76 Dallas, TX
12/19/76 Birmingham, AL
Is there any better covered tour than this? :) Dallas, Birmingham released, Pittsburgh from audience recording released too. No reason why to released Wichita now.... A lot of shows from 76 already released.
02/13/77 West Palm Beach, FL
02/14/77 St. Petersburg. FL
02/15/77 Orlando, FL
02/16/77 Montgomery. AL
02/21/77 Charlotte. NC
Charlotte released with bonus tracks from various tours, but... I dont like that concepcion of Unchained Melody CD. And then - nothing beside Spring Shows was released. I hope that they will release some interesting shows from 77. Amarillo is interesting show because of tracklist, I hope that full recording of Ann Arbor will be released too - it is usally rated as best 1977 concert and Iīm sure that it will beat America, Dragon Heart or New Haven shows! Rapid City is another example of show which I hope that will be released on FTD label - because it should be available for fans, but not from wide public.

I don't get that when he's said to be the guru of Elvis music.:hmm:
must agree that abileene was a dismal show as the audio was and still is available from larry patrick, i would also think that ERNST would be more selective especially since it's bin said that they have over 200 soundboards at their disposal . I honestly think they have only a handful of soundboards in their hands , but i do bet they have much bettr than this show - my way is a total let down from this show just wait till you hear it.

We can better wait and hear the Amarillo show first before burning it down to the ground. If the sound quality is as good as the 1977 FTD's released so far, it could very well be a welcome addition to our collections.
Ernst released more 76 and 77 shows on FTD, very true. But he also released a load of 69 shows, which if we are being honest are pretty much all the same. I like em, don't get me wrong here. But 1969 is covered both on regular releases and FTD's.
I welcome a good sounding 1977 show which never had a release before. If it's really bad I might change my opinion, but only after I heard it.
The Rehearsal cd is simply cool, mostly because we get the songs Leavin It Up To You and Portrait in hopefully better sound.

I look forward to the 'Pot Luck' release but not very excited by the Amarillo one. Personally I do not like Soundboard recordings as they have no atmosphere and therefore very clinical with more often than not containing the same tracks. I prefer audience recordings with all the excitement that entails.
However, I will buy them both as I always do.
I would like Ernst to release more 'live' product from 1971, especially the November Tour.

Ernst will always be critiqued by some for his handling of the catalogue, the difference between us and him-
He knows exactly what is in the vaults-we make educated guesses from sources available.
He has probably listened to most if not all of the soundboards and reel to reels in the vaults-we have not.
He knows the marketing stratagy Sony/BMG/RCA has about all thats in the vaults-and he must abide by that.... conserving the greatest assets.... (a standard business practice) probably will save many good early 70s soundboards for the future....such as a great lost concerts campaign.
He is not the owner of this material-he is an employee who must explain and define to others, under the rules that these others lay out for him IE he does have limits imposed upon him.
Anyone involved with marketing Elvis in any form be it recordings, films, trinkets will always be criticised....sometimes unjustly. IMO

Wow! Great releases! As long as the soundquality is perfect (like the Spring Tours 77), this Amarillo cd will be one of my favorites of next month. The rehearsal cd might be amazing, but it depends (for me) on the soundquality. Not too keen about the artwork for that cd. The Amarillo cover looks very un-FTD-ish. That might be a compliment ;)
The reason for Ernst to release more 1976-1977 shows is that there might be more tapes available in good soundquality? And perhaps salesnumbers might point out that the FTD releases covering this period are selling quite well?
