I don't know much about the history of this, so could someone enlighten me. Does anyone know of any drummers before Ronnie who did this?, I mean placing pillows or blankets inside the kick drum to give it a deeper thumping sound. I'm hoping that he was one of first to do this.

It is common practice actually, an old drummers trick, back then, long before Ronnie and still today when you are not in a million dollar band.

Ringo Star did that often. See the pic below.

That's been done basically since modern drum kits existed by all kinds of drummers.
