Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this one. I've always enjoyed the TOMORROW IS A LONG TIME CD that RCA released on the regular label back in 2000, so this "Classic Albums" release is definitely a good idea. ALTHOUGH...I do have to add the stipulation that FTD should be careful about setting a precedent by starting to flood the market with a bunch of "what if" releases. The STANDING ROOM ONLY release was an exception because there were actually plans to release that album back in '72. The MEMPHIS TENNESSEE is also acceptable because it was originally released as an album in the UK, so again, I can see it being included in the "Classic Albums" series. But this GUITAR MAN compilation is just that...a compilation that FTD is creating based on what they "think" would be a good album. And while I certainly agree with you that this will be a "cracker" of an album, FTD does need to be careful that they don't start putting out a bunch of these "what if" type albums. Otherwise, they will completely ruin what they are trying to accomplish with the "Classic Albums" series. :hmm:

Of course, this is just my two cents on the situation... ;)

It's official. Ernst has lost it. Time for change.

Wow! That's a great setlist. I've always loved this session. I think this one marks Elvis' first real step towards the comeback special. Really fine material.

Horrible, horrible cover by the way. Elvis looked really bad during this period in the 60s. Just look at Elvis in movies like Paradise Hawaiian Style or Clambake. It's a night&day difference with the Elvis we knew from years before and the years following.

WOOHOO....Me LIKES this baby!!!!!!

I'll agree, the cover design (while IMO is ok) could be stronger, plus it doesn't make much sense to release a title named "Guitar Man" and not have a photo of Elvis w/ the guitar:doh:

The track listing looks fantastic, and I'm really looking fwd to hearing those outtakes of Guitar Man, Fools Fall In Love, Hi-Heel Sneakers, and Big Boss Man! (y) (y) (y)

I also know of someone who I'm sure is on cloud 9 about now after seeing all of those outtakes of Singing Tree that will be appearing on this release. Can anyone guess who this is? ;)

The project as a whole IS SUPERB!!! yes, in the same line as "Memphis Tennessee a.k.a The Lost Album". Fantastic, and a great way to put all the alternate takes together, but errr....

What happened with the Jan '68 Nashville session? in other words, did or did not "Too Much Monkey B." and "U.S Male" ought to be on this one?

And yes, I think most of us are going to agree that the cover art is plain horrible. The BMG's "Tomorrow is a Long Lime" cover, that was a killer one. If they where going to use a movie pic, a think the obvious choice was one of those publicity pics from Stay Away Joe.

Anyhow, this one is a pleaseant surprice!!! Thumbs Up!

Now this where better photos to use in the cover, just my opinion...

'Guitar Man' looks a real winner. The only two tracks I have never been a fan of are 'Come What May' and 'Fools Fall In Love' but we all differ in these respects. I will definately be getting this one.

Here's how I wish they'd designed the cover (plus I'm partial to green:lol:)

Guess I'm in the minority here as I don't mind the cover photo they chose...

Although I do like the alternate cover that Steve designed and the alternate photos that ROR posted...those certainly would have looked VERY cool on the cover as well!! (y)

I'm also a little confused about the lack of inclusion for U.S. MALE & TOO MUCH MONKEY BUSINESS. On one of the other news sites (can't remember which one right off hand), it was also discussed about the lack of inclusion of GOIN' HOME and STAY AWAY, which were included on the TOMORROW IS A LONG TIME CD. Perhaps Ernst is considering releasing a STAY AWAY, JOE soundtrack in the "Classic Albums" series (featuring all of the available outtakes of DOMINIC, just for Steve!! :lmfao:)

But seriously though...are there enough other tracks to consider doing something with U.S. MALE and TOO MUCH MONKEY BUSINESS on a separate album at some point?? :hmm:

That's what I was thinking, maybe there is a Stay Away Joe in the works for this FTD series, that in the same fashion as Wild in The Country was released: a soundtrack album that never was. Now maybe Too Much Monkey Busines and U.S Male are being saved to boost up a somewhat poor album as the music in Stay Away is not that strong?

U.S. Male was the other side too the Stay Away single, which may build a case, but really? I mean really? I do believe it is a total mistake not to include those two tracks in this great CD.

Maybe the alternate takes for those tracks might have required a third CD, while they will be short on material for Stay Away, and so that's the only reasonable explanation I can see.

Mike – FTD never fails to come up with the goods, once again there's another cracking CD to look forward to,plus, albeit a previously released soundboard (LIVE IN LA) which happens to be one of my very own favourites.

I haven't got the Live In Vegas CD yet , I need a cash injection from somewhere? Maybe I'll wait and treat myself in a couple of months to 3-4 FTDs...

Looking forward to another vinyl release too...

Cheers,

Dave

I agree 100% Dave!!! Just speculating about what FTD might do with U.S. MALE and TOO MUCH MONKEY BUSINESS... :hmm:

For the most part, I think FTD continues to do a FANTASTIC job. I certainly have made my fair share of criticisms of their releases from time to time, but overall, I am the first to say that regardless of my feelings about a particular release, I fully support the label 1,000% and am thankful we have it for sure!! Just imagine all the great music we'd be missing out on if we didn't have FTD!!! (y)

I certainly hope my remarks never come across as too harsh or too biting when it comes to the FTD releases, even when I write reviews of the FTD releases.

Its one of the most original ones weve had for a while, so congrats on that, not too sure bout the Artwork, but i believe thats not FTDs strong point, perhaps a better pic could help ...........

I'm with Mike: if this truly would have been "an album that never was" Too Much Monkey Business and US Male should have been included. A weird choice not to have included them.
