I think that the person who had it only loaned it to Graceland for the display

it was there in 1987 when I went - sadly, the film didn't load properly and I didn't have any pictures from the last part of the awards room.

There was on this site a very good story from Bogarcon about the story of the cape from the Graceland Archive. Also a story about the return of the one Elvis sent away in the audience.
Thanks, Steve Grayson

The thread talking about the long cape is featured in the "Similar Threads" section below -it's titled Two different Aloha Suits and Liberace cape

I didn't realize EPE had it in their possesion and sold it. What a shame, although, it was at a Charity auction!
I wish there was a definitive book/booklet on the jumpsuits and capes - one that
featured decent photos and closeups - & why not, there are a million books about every other thing Elvis!

The last time I was there they had a sign beside it. It said that the guy(I believe it was a doctor) who caught its family loaned it to EPE to put on display. When I saw the Aloha suit and cape it was in the raquetball court. I havent been there in five years so I dont know where its kept now. 2011 does sound like a good year for another Memphis pilgrimage.

I have a feeling that a lot of people, who are replying to hounddog's original question, are not aware of the fact that he's talking about the long cape, that was originally designed but never used because of it's length and weight. I do know that this cape was on display for a while but now it's up for auction, which I think is a shame. In my opinion Graceland should take more effort in purchasing wardrobe items to make shure it gets where it belongs. AT GRACELAND !!!!!

Tigerman,

That was not the long 'Aloha' cape you saw....that was the original 'calf-length' cape that Elvis wore in the AFH show that he later threw away into the audience.

The original cape was caught by Mr. Bruce Spinks, a sportswriter for the Honolulu Advertiser. When super-fan Andrew Kern heard of the cape, he and Bruce got together and Andrew bought the cape from Mr Spinks. Andy kept the cape for years and EPE also knew for years where the cape was.

In 1994, Andrew passed away from cancer. After Andy's passing, Andy's fater called the late Todd Morgan and asked him if he would be interested in the cape and when Todd said "Yes!" the next words out of Andy's father's mouth astonished Todd. He said, "I'm going to use a word that you're really going to like. How do you like the word "donate"? Well, I'm sure that Todd just about fell out of his seat! Arrangements were made to bring the cape back to Graceland and it was put on display permanently during ETW 1995 and has remained there ever since with a plaque beside it telling how it got there and who the person was that gave the cape back to Graceland.

My mistake. That was the only one that I have ever saw up close.

It amazes me that EPE would auction such a classic piece of memorabilia, it should remain at Graceland where it can be looked after otherwise this cape will end up like the Blue Nail Jumpsuit from 1972, which ended up in the wrong hands and has since been worn by a tribute artist and has now fallen in to disrepair. (information supplied by Leroy).

Graceland has sold many things over the years, I suppose there are many duplications with regards to documentation, however I believe that ALL should remain at Graceland where they can be kept in a controlled environment.
