It might be "Riding the Rainbow"? If so, that's from the KIG GALAHAD soundtrack, originally released as an Extended Play in 1962. The song was recorded in '61.

Today you can get it either on the Double Feature series Cd: Kid Galahad/Girls Girls Girls. Or in the FTD release of the Kid Galahad soundtrack.

In 1972 during the On Tour rehearsals Elvis sang a very small part of Over The Rainbow, a so called "one liner".

"Over the Rainbow" was a huge hit for Judy Garland-from the movie "The Wizard of Oz" Elvis never recorded this song-but many others have in the last 70 years since Garland made it a hit. It was one of her signature songs.

Bit of a stretch to say it was made famous by Jerry Lee. Judy Garland's version appeared in one of the biggest films of all time in the 30s.

My fave version is Eva Cassidy's.

And yes Elvis never recorded it.

Don`t remember ever hearing Elvis doing "Somewhere over the rainbow"..not even a one-line version. Closest I could see on youtube was some guy called Ron "Elvis" Moore doing a version of the song.
Agree with T_J on Eva Cassidy`s version...probably my favourite version as well.(y)

I wrote that to but did not remember the name of Judy Garland anymore.

Jerry song it live at least 750 times in 40+ years, and recorded it. He played it more then anyone else and also played it when basically nobody did.To me, that's making it famous.
You have a point-but Judy Garland had been performing this song since 1939 when she made the Wizard of Oz, it was her song Although Garland appeared in concert as early as 1943, it was only in the 1950s she began regular concert appearances, beginning with a critically acclaimed 1951 concert series at the London Palladium and she set a record when she appeared for 19 weeks at the Palace Theatre in New York City, also in 1951 and she continued to tour until just three months prior to her death in 1969. I am not sure how many times she sang it in concert or on her weekly TV shows and specials but lets say it was in the hundreds (as I pointed out earlier it was a signature song for her)
Not to mention that the Wizard of Oz was shown every year for years on network tv and today is shown regularly on TCM and each time it is shown she performs the song.

To me, that's making it famous.

The point is that the song didn't need anyone to make it famous when Jerry Lee had his moderate country hit with it in 1980. It was already one of the most famous songs of all time and had already been covered numerous times. Jerry might have popularised the song among his own fan base, but that's about as far as it goes.

There was a guy who recorded a song.. but it wasn't last year, even if it was popular again last year. It was a beautiful song and the guy's name was Kamakawiwo'ole. For some reason the Hawaiian language suits me. It's somewhat erotic and I like it how they break up words like that, like staccato parts applied moderately in a piece of music. Does anyone know if it's the same tune that was done by Garland?

You've got that right. Eva slayed "Over the Rainbow". She had one of the most beautiful voices that I have ever heard. Did you hear version of Fleetwood Macs "Songbird"?

It`s the same song that Judy Garland recorded...the version by Israel Kamakawiwo`ole is a bit different though..it is kind of mixed with the song "What a wonderful world"(The Louis Armstrong song). It is featured on his album "Facing Future"...lovely album, well worth listening to if you get the opportunity.
