So what did Elvis used to play on the jukebox for his own pleasure? Which artists/bands became a huge and constant influence on his singing and performance style? So what 45rpm's and L.P.'s are in that legendary record collection he kept in Graceland, same record collection he started as a teenager hanging around in record shops in 50's Memphis?

So most of the songs I'll post here, and I do invite you all to post, is the stuff we do know Elvis loved, artist he admired and tributed, songs that latter he recorded, most for his own pleasure, either in the studio, live, or as informal recordings at home.

Elvis recorded this song, out of a jam at the American Sound Studios in February '69, and released (dubbed and edited) in the Elvis Back in Memphis L.P. November same year. A favourite of his, we got evidence of him jaming again on this number with the TCB Band while rehearsing for his August '70 concerts.

So how about this, Elvis must have been around 12 years old when Eddie Arnold recorded this song. Elvis remember it well at 34, as he started to play it at the piano out of nowhere. That jam became one of the highlights of his '69 Amercian Sessions.

On October 3, 1945, Presley at age ten sang "Old Shep" for his first public performance, a singing contest at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show. Dressed as a cowboy, he stood on a chair to reach the microphone. He came in fifth place, winning $5 and a free ticket to the fair rides.

One thing had to be noted about I Got A Woman, is the one song Elvis was doing on stage since the early day (sun era), all the way through his 50's tours, he recorded the thing for his 1st album, he did it in his post army concerts in memphis and hawaii '61, he rehearsed it for the '68 comeback special, and did it live again from '69 to '77. Can't thing of another song that he did more often and for a longer period of time. Guess he liked that one huh?

Here's E doing the later version(a cool video medley with what sounds like the "Dixieland Rocks" version) of "I got a woman/Amen" that we talked about earlier. I love how he flowed effortlessly from IGAW to Amen at 2:10 and then back to IGAW. I included Larnell Harris' version first performed on Billy Grahams program in the late 70's. I included this version only because I could easily hear Elvis singing a version similar to this. I honestly believe that Elvis would have became a full time gospel singer in the 1980's had he lived.

Lowell Fulson's Reconsider Baby.

Elvis and Scotty Moore, they love the man so much that they actually went to see him live somewhere in '55 as they both where touring the same area. Much to their surprise, Mr. Fulson was not only aware of Elvis sun records, but spot him and Scotty in the audience and asked to join him for a jam on stage, and yes, it was Reconsider Baby the one song they jam with. Awesome isn't it?

Elvis recorded the son in '60 for the Elvis is Back album, and played it live a bunch of times, from the Hawaii '61 concert, to his vegas season in '69, to his Madison Square Garden gigs, and even as late as '77.

Okey, so here I am, catching up with this old thread about the stuff that Elvis must have loved. This time with a Jerry Lee number, both raised in the south, educated by Sam Philips, and just as The Beatles vs. The Stones in the 60's, back in the 50's they where taken rivals, although actually they where friends from each other. Elvis was a huge fan Roy Hamilton, and you can see how much Elvis vocal style comes from Hamilton as well as from Clyde McPantter. For sure two of his top favourites.

Yes I believe this one comes from his Chips Moman produced American Sessions at the time he and Elvis meet while both recording there. Probably a nod after Elvis gave him the song Angelica, a song that Chips gave to Elvis as one of the potential big hit singles for him during that session, but Elvis gave it to Hamilton who was struggling gettin new hit material.

In the end the song didn't went that well for Hamilton, as it could have been for Elvis, but a lot of people recorded it after him. It became Hamilton's swan song as he sadly died too soon in mid '69.

I personaly like much more Don't Cry Daddy as a song, I think its superior. So you might as well be 100% right.

What I meant is that Chips was pushing the song to Elvis considering for a Single Release with strong hit potential, that being a Barry Mann song, who at the time was gettin more hits than Mac Davis. At the time Chips Moman and his sound at American studios had a strong reputation about knowing what could and what could not be a hit. Angelica had a stronger American Studios feel than the much country Don't Cry Daddy, so people might have been expecting more of that after Suspicious Minds. But who knows really...

Any how, Elvis had his own way to do things so, we don't really even know in which groove would Elvis have done it. Don't Cry Daddy and Kentucky Rain are among my favourite Elvis tunes, but some how didn't went as good on the charts as In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds, guess at the time people was expecting more of the soulish Elvis sound, and less of the country flavor.

Just listening to the words of Angelica - that was just such an Elvis song. he loved this kind of ballad, I can hear his passion as he would have sung this song - much like in the way Roy Hamilton sings. It may not have been a hit for Elvis either, but it is one great love song.
