DUKE BARDWELL ON E.E.R - This week only on Elvis Express Radio will be a new in-
depth interview with one of Elvis' 70's Bass players, Duke Bardwell who was unceremonially
erased from all recordings from the 'TODAY' album except the single, 'T-R-O-U-B-L-E'.
You can hear this exclusive interview on this coming Elvis Request Show on Friday.

Could someone tell me the story of why he was taken off the 'Today' recordings?

Could someone tell me the story of why he was taken off the 'Today' recordings?

Basically, Duke's bass playing was removed from the TODAY sessions because they didn't like the way he sounded. The only song from the TODAY sessions that Duke's bass part was left intact on was T-R-O-U-B-L-E, and that was only because The Colonel was rush-releasing the single in advance of the album and didn't have time to go back and replace Duke's bass part on that song. Other than T-R-O-U-B-L-E, the rest of the TODAY album had a different bass player (Norbert Putnam I believe).

But, if you want to hear the songs from the TODAY session as they were originally recorded with Duke's bass playing, check out the outtakes from the FTD TODAY CD and you can hear how Duke's bass playing sounded compared to the released master recordings on the album itself. To my ears, I don't notice much of a difference... :hmm:
