Funny How Time Slips Away was written by Willie Nelson in the early 60s and there were various covers before Elvis made his version in June 1970.

Ricky Nelson covered the song on his album "Country Fever" in April 1967.
As you can hear, the backing is very similar, especially the guitar. That is no surprise, as James Burton featured on both versions. Ricky's version also featured Elvis' future pianist Glen D. Hardin, who would later appear on Elvis' live versions of the track.
