funny

we always here about the Great American Songbook

and it never occurred to me that wasn't just an American thing.

Come to think of it - there's an Elvis album called Canadian Tribute, which would be the Canadian version of that idea

kd lang's Hymns of the 49th parallel would be too.

I was surprised that this project actually got off the ground... didn`t really see how it would sell or who would buy it,apart from the fans. Seeing the tracklist now though..it`s actually quite an interesting collection of tunes. I`m surprisingly happy at how it turned out!

I will definately be getting a copy of this double album - such an unusual sdelection of tracks. Could be a good seller in the UK if SONY ship it to the various supermarket chains.

It's a pretty poor selection of songs really, with Elvis frequently not on top form. The only tracks I think are worthy of such a compilation are:

CD1
The Fair's Moving On
Just Pretend
How the Web Was Woven
My Boy
Let Me Be There
Let's Be Friends (underrated)

CD2
This Is The Story
A Little Bit of Green
Danny Boy
Twenty Days And Twenty Nights
How Great Thou Art.

Maybe they should have put together a strong'ish 15-18 track single CD, rather than a weak double.

Just where have all the Elvis fans gone? As of today, the 'Elvis Sings The Great British Songbook' has sold a mere 485 copies and is No.137 in the current Midweek Album Charts. I got my copy today and it is a great production with an informative booklet - pity Sony have decided not to supply it to the supermarkets etc.

I think this is an interesting idea, its a good concept an all, but yes, a lot of fillers, a lot of second class material, made of it a 20 track Cd release just with the top class tracks, and we got a winner for sure.

Anyway a matter of tastes maybe and you can always made your own playlist,, its an original idea anyhow.

Its quite disapointing that this hasn't done better. I expected a big seller in this one (not huge, but big). 400 odd sales is pretty poor. At the same time its interesting to think that someone can sell only 400 albums and get to number 137 in the charts.

This release was instigated by Todd Slaughter of the UK Fan Club. It would appear that although released by SONY it is not one that they themselves would have put out - perhaps because there are no rock tracks on the album thereby not fitting in with the image of Elvis as 'The King Of Rock 'n' Roll'. Further, SONY wish to save all their promotional money for the September/October release of the 'Viva Elvis' CD which will be a different ball game. It's a shame as I think the CD has a novel concept and one that if given some TV promotion would have entered the Top 10.

It would have done a lot better had the supermarkets stocked it.

A LOT of fans who don't visit the messageboards will have no idea it is even out there.

Sad for a very worthwhile CD.

I like this release - interesting choice of songs. Like everybody else I'm disappointed that once again SONY have fallen short on the distribution side - are they even really interested in Elvis anymore??

Im sure they are. I think that SONY are concentrating on the Viva Elvis release. Brian could probably confirm or deny this.

I can confirm that 'Viva Elvis' will be one of the biggest releases of the year by ANY artist. SONY are going to give it the FULL treatment.

If that collection is the best British writers can muster, then I'm not highly impressed. It would have been better to reduce it to a singe CD best of.

Not wishing to go off topic but as you asked. The definitive list of tracks has not yet been finalised but the 'Viva Elvis' Show contains the following songs:

Blue Suede Shoes
Don't Be Cruel
Too Much
One Night
All Shook Up (female only)
Saved
Got A Lot of Livin To Do/Shake Rattle & Roll
Heartbreak Hotel
Love Me Tender(Duet)
Didja Ever
Return To Sender
Are You Lonesome Tonight(Duet)
Medley: Mystery Train/Let's Play House/I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine/Tryin To Get To You/Baby What You Want Me to Do/Tiger Man.
Burning Love
Bossa Nova Baby
King Creole(Duet)
Jailhouse Rock
It's Now Or Never
Can't Help Falling In Love
Love Me/Don't (Duet)
Viva Las Vegas
Suspicious Minds (live version)
Hound Dog (70's version).

Further there will be at least two single releases which may not necessarily come from the album as 46 tracks were recorded at the session.

The tracks have been remixed with state of the art sound and up to date backings. Release date is now either September/October.

I hope you are correct-but even if Sony gives it the FULL treatment-time will tell if it is indeed one of the biggest releases by any artist this year.
I have my doubts only because Viva Elvis has seemed to be trouble laden since the beginning-the reviews were a mixed lot, and they are still tinkering with the show. We will see when the release hits stores.
