Sinatra didn't much care for Elvis in the 50's

and I imagine a lot of current day artists are jealous that they aren't as successful as Elvis.

He set the template, not only the most successful singer, but the one who turned that into a successful movie career too.

no matter what else can be said for his films - he was the highest paid actor for many years in Hollywood. Few other people could have been the lead in 28 consecutive money making films.

Er, he did write the song for Sinatra, not Elvis!

and even goes so far to say that he didn't care for ELVIS version

Oh wow ... shock, horror! Let's string him up for such a slanderous comment, shall we?

Anka was not jealous of Elvis in any way.

Anyone has the right to "not care" for an Elvis song, especially the man who wrote it.

Both Jones and Boone have been nothing but complimentary to Elvis over the years.

They were not jealous; they are both smart enough to realise they were not Elvis, nor could they ever be.

Give just one example where Little Richard was jealous of Elvis?

Please.

Little Richard loved Elvis and what he did for music.

If anything i think its jerry lee or little richard fans who are jealous of Elvis. Many of those fans believe Elvis didnt deserve the title of King of Rock and Roll.

Little Richard has praised Elvis for sparking interest in his tutti fruit after radio stations stopped playing it.

Jerry lee could be see to be jealous of Elvis though, however has said some good things to say.

Has anyone read Hellfire by Nick Tosches? I have always wondered if Jerry Lee's quotes on Elvis in that book are really his or something the author wrote to make Jerry seem meaner. Some of them are a "little" cruel...

Exactly true, Pat Boone maybe did not understand Elvis but he liked and respected him so did Tom Jones.

Again so true, Little Richard has said many times Elvis opened the doors for our type music and that helped make Richard more acceptable to white America along with all black singers. Chuck Berry said similar things over the years.

No one could/will ever be Elvis - same goes for Jones and Boone - they are all unique entertainers in their own right. But, to answer the question:

They were complimentary probably because they felt that, to the press/media, they had to be.

If you've watched "Elvis: The Echo Will Never Die", Tom makes the comment to the effect of, "if he'd had more friends around him" (intimating himself) that he wouldn't have died when he did. When Marty Lacker saw/heard that statement, it angered him and he told Tom's publicist to tell him (Tom) that "he's full of ****!" and that Elvis would've kicked Tom's butt out the door.

Elvis liked their music but that was about it for him. Elvis kept other entertainers at arms length because he (as has been said by those who did know him) didn't like the "Hollywood scene", even though there have been many pics of Tom and Elvis together either at Las Vegas or Hawaii.

I have read, though, that Elvis did feel threatened by Tom Jones or there was some jealousy there. He reportedly made the statement (which can be found in "Elvis Aaron Presley - Revelations From the Memphis Mafia": "That SOB came along after my fans and he's hot!".

In 1969 I called a call in radio show on the local rock station DJ Mort Crowley was taking rock questions and I asked him if Tom Jones (who was on fire in 69) was as big an entertainer as Elvis...... his answer was that TJ was a great entertainer but Elvis was one of a kind-who could not be compared to many people.............but TJ was compared by Crowley to Otis Redding, Jerry Butler, Engelbert Humperdink, all he said were great singers and entertainers but their was only 1 Elvis.
For a 14 year old Elvis fan this was music to my ears

I noticed a lot of hate or disdain from more recent rock bands or more intellectual / avantgarde musicians. Perhaps it's because they know intervals by heart but never sang a song with the joy or emotion the way Elvis did.

As for myself, I don't make a lot of money with music - yet. There are some songs - and of course it isn't true - of which I felt I was the only person on the entire planet who could understand his pain or sorrow he exposed in them.

That bathing suit was never happier than me being an Elvis-fan. But then again I'm not an intellectual avant-gardist or anything, haha!

Are you kidding

Pat Boone is always comparing his popularity to Elvis from the 50's and early 60's and talking about how many hit recordings he had.
Nothing wrong with that on the surface but he comes across as trying to compete with Elvis in his own mind.
He spoke at Elvis week a few years ago and he kept talking of how many hit records and how popular he was.

Tom Jones is almost always saying something provocative and unneccesarry when it comes to Elvis.

I agree about his right to dislike the song.

Well in 1956-1960 Boone was competition for Elvis-he was more the old school crooner than true rock artist and he did have huge hits, Aint That a Shame, Love Letters in the Sand, April Love, Dont Forbid Me, I Almost Lost My Mind etc...............According to Billboard, Boone was the second biggest charting artist of the late 1950s, behind only Elvis Presley. That does put him as a competitor in the 1950s, his career just did not have the legs of Elvis into the 60s, and lets not forget Boone has a religious upbrining which did limit his choices in his career from his own standpoint.
Tom Jones does say some provocative things but he has never been mean spirited to Elvis in my mind anyway.

I know Pat Boone was in competition with Elvis back then it's the way he comes across when talking about it.
It's like he's insecure about himself and feels the need to talk himself up in comparison with Elvis.
Not much comparison as they were two different types of artists who played to different type of audiences.
The stuff he says about Elvis being in awe of him when they first met and the lip syncing stuff from Cleveland in 1955 I don't believe.

Well in 1950s music there was a huge comparison to be made-as I said Pat was more a traditional pop crooner, Elvis the new kid on the block with a new music and style-so Pat probably still thinks in those terms-I mean it is his career he remembers not Elvis's, and he was a heavy duty competitor for those early years. So he may just be thinking from his point of view-not necessarily against Elvis.
I know Elvis had a pretty healthy respect for Pats ability to sing ballads back in the 50s, I think I recall him mentioning it in an interview somewhere along the way.
On the Million Dollar Quartet recording you can hear Elvis boast with bravado about how he was sent the demo for
"Don't Forbid Me" and it set around for ages but Pat Boone now had a record on it-so Elvis in the 50s also had a healthy competition in his own mind with Pat. But that does not negate the respect he had for Pats voice or style.

I heard about it , I think competition was tight when Elvis around...(y)
I will not blame Anka if he dont care with Elvis... to each of its own...BUT one time i did get an album signed by Paul Anka with the help of his guitarist when he played at Borgata in Atlantic City '07 ...

BUT again.... you dont have to be entertainer to be jealous of Elvis....I think many men back then were jealous of him, even now :Pbecause he was/ is VERY appealing to women....

I guess its all a question of insecurity though. Look at Elvis when he was in the army. He supposedly kept asking Priscilla about Ricky Nelson and his career at that time.

If I asked a teenager today if they knew Elvis and if they knew Ricky Nelson - I would put money on which one was the unknown..

I think it's telling that artists today are still compared to Elvis

and everyone falls short - so I guess there's a certain anxiety there

of course, being tapped to be the next Elvis tends to be a singer's career ender

sort of like most actors vanish after playing Jesus.

Wrong on both counts.

Tom Jones has rather recently been coming out with bizarre Elvis stories

it's like Tom is desperate for press

first there was the Elvis came into the bathroom to sing to me while I was showering

Elvis kept guns everywhere

and how if he'd been around more, he could have saved Elvis.

Ya know, about Little Richard, he's gone on record, a number of times, saying he doesn't think of EP as one of the founders of rock n' roll. He considers all the originators as black performers (e.g. Arthur Crudup, see http://www.onlinerootsofrock.com/blues/artists/crudup/).

To be frank, I take Little Richard's comments as based solely on race: if EP had been black, THEN AND ONLY THEN, would people like Little Richard acknowledge him.

I've seen this kind of racism against EP in many R&R and blues history books.

Thats a new one to me-I have heard Richard in interviews, or read his comments and he has always thanked Elvis for opening the door to rock for black entertainers such as himself.
Little Richard statement from Spinner Magazine:
http://www.spinner.com/2007/08/14/little-richard-on-elvis/
"Elvis was God-given.

There's no explanation.

A messiah comes around

every few thousand years,

and Elvis was it this time."
like the way Richard himself put it: "Elvis was the King - I was the Architect of rock & roll!"
