View Full Version : Twilight - The Presley Factor?

I kinda stumbled across this little article of some sort... thought it was pretty interesting.
Other than the numerous Twilight profiles I’ve done on my other Examiner page, the only Twilight-related article I’ve done here was an attempt to ease tensions among Twi-hards after an unfortunately curt comment by Stephen King. However ...
After recently doing a bio of Elvis Presley, something occurred to me about one of the mysterious reasons this series is so popular. Yes, Stephenie Meyer paid homage to some classically successful literature in her books (Romeo and Juliet, anyone?), and basically comprised a story about an “every-girl” in love with the "ultimate bad boy with a heart of gold," but when it comes to the furor over the film series (and furor is putting it mildly), I’ve noticed something I don’t think anyone else has brought up: The Presley Factor.
My theory is not rock solid, but as pictures often say more than words, check out exhibits A and B below.
Countless film reviewers have referred to Robert Pattinson as having a brooding quality -- but with that tousled and slightly greasy mane piled high on his noggin, and his ability to put his chin down and his eyes up, creating a dark-lidded smolder, from certain angles he strongly resembles a young Elvis Presley. (There's a little James Dean in there, too, but let's stick with the subject at hand.) He has certainly mastered the ability to cause screaming pandemonium among teenage girls.
EXHIBIT A - PRESLEY AND PATTINSON

The painfully lovely Kristen Stewart, on the other hand, is a chameleon. Sometimes her look can change so drastically she doesn’t even resemble herself. Other times, she reminds me quite a bit of Elvis’ daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. Both are jaw-droppingly gorgeous, know how to use smoky eye shadow to great effect ... and is it just me or do they both look perpetually stoned?
EXHIBIT B - LISA MARIE PRESLEY AND KRISTEN STEWART
http://www.truetwilight.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/LMP_KS.jpg
does all this mean? I haven’t a clue. But something else of note is that Elvis’ granddaughter, and Lisa Marie’s daughter, Danielle Riley Keough is making her film debut in The Runaways, alongside Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. Coincidence? You decide.
I'll admit it, I am a fan of Rob Pattinson but besides having the hair and the smuldering/dazzling look I don't think he looks anything like Elvis. A friend of mine pointed out that when he's in his Edward costume he looks a bit like him and I kinda agree... a smidge. Kristen on the other hand she does have those instances where she kinda favors Lisa. What do you guys think about this?

Just one minor difference between Elvis and flavour-of-the-month Pattinson.
Elvis was good looking; Pattinson is as ugly as a hatful of broken arses. ;)

Interesting article. I don't mind the Elvis comparison, as a woman deeply in love with Elvis, I see peices of him in most everything/everyone, but to compare LisaMarie with Kristen AND Pattinson with Elvis - ee-www! They're lovers in the movie - so no, I don't see any co-inky-dinky's there.

I have seen him cleaned up and normal, as playing a role like "Twilight" he is meant to look this way. He is actually a very nice looking youngman if we leave him out of his mystical form in Twilight, and keep him far away from Elvis..LOL
I do have a pretty open mind, and I can see what the poster was trying to get across..even with Lisa Marie and the female star of "Twilight"
In his/her defense I can only say my feeling is that it has zero to do with Elvis, as when you love someone as much as we do, Elvis everything can seem related to him.

Pattinson is my kids favourite. They say he is HOT.
To me Elvis was HOT.
I see a bright future for Pattinson as a rising teen idol.
I can easily see in him the Elvis of 2009 and such.......
I like him too, but do not see his ressemblance to Elvis.
I become a nag when i say: Elvis was Elvis, and no one will even come close to him.
It was not only the beautiful face he had but the whole package, the time frame, everything that made him unique
I become a nag when i say: Elvis was Elvis, and no one will even come close to him.

The thing is, I compare the two pictures and shouldnt. No one can compare to Elvis, full stop. but this is only my opinion. the kids of today (and maybe not just kids) may prefer the other guy. I dont know him and maybe he has some talent, but I dont think anyone can come close to making the kind of history Elvis Presley did back in the mid fifties.

the kids don't take the time anymore to fully discover Elvis, May.
My girls always admit he was quite handsome but they are not into his music. Maybe when they grow older who knows.... They hear the music here quite often and like it but they are not really into it.....
For them it is a guy who died many years ago, you know.....
I still had him living in my lifetime and that makes the difference.
My mom used to tell me how gorgeous Clark Gable was....
I saw gone with the wind and had to admit he was indeed a very good looking man but there it stopped somehow for me too.
Each generation needs his idol I guess and an idol who they see alive and who can cover each week all the tabloids, with new stories.
That is a bit gone for Elvis.
He isn't alive anymore you know and that is something the youth can't really grasp....
Elvis was way more good looking then Pattinson but for them Pattinson, is the GREATEST....
What can we say....
The day Elvis died, the world kept on turning.
I think if he had been born later in time he would have become even a greater artist with more possibilities for him too.....
He could easily have made films like Twilight too. His beauty is timeless and seems to fit in every timeframe really....
Amazing.
I do wonder if the generation of my teens will still talk about him to their children??????
Or will he slowly be forgotten?????
He was unique but time does its work ruthlessly and merciless......

Rob Pattinson doesn't look vampy enough for me. Something is missing, a depth. He doesn't have the manly inner strength, to me.
In the series of "Angel" David Boreanz pulls it off.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me how many people use these forums to ridicule and rubbish other entertainers.
I think the best case of this was when MJ died. The poor guy was hardly cold and out came the venom.
Now we have a repeat of the same thing only with Robert Pattinson.
It starts out with someone mentioning the Presley factor. Why, I don't know. This then gives all the self opinionated an opportunity to sharpen their tongues and do a hatchet job on Pattinson. Again I ask, why? Are you so insecure and shallow that you honestly think he's a threat to Elvis?
Let's just accept the guy for what he is. An actor doing a job. And a bloody well paid job !!
I'd also like to defend his costar, but this little voice keeps telling me why waste time and words on Mr Getlo and his ilk.
In closing I'd like to quote the famous person who once said " GET A LIFE !!!!!!"

I agree with you about the other celebs - but Jackson was long ridiculed before he died - and deservedly so.
I will say that I've never seen as much glee over a celeb death - that was a bit disturbing.
Since, it exceeded the response usually reserved for serial killers

What's laughable is someone posts a thread comparing a flavor of the month celebrity like this guy to a celebrity of Elvis' stature.
Elvis fans have a tendency especially one's of a younger generation to compare Elvis to them.
The only people that could compare to Elvis are Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and the Beatles as a group otherwise Elvis has no equals.

IMO Pattinson is a fine actor and the fact the teenage girls go crazy about him says it all.
No comparison to THE one and only, but there is no need to either.
He is neat, i liked the films and my girls do not stop talking about him. I wish him a great career and IMO he is PERFECT for the role too.

I was joking around earlier in this thread, and it came out wrong, with regard to what I said about Rob Pattinson.
Rob, in the roll at Edward Cullen, was very good, he loved his love interest Bella, very much. The love story within the drama was so very touching.
Rob, acting in his roll as Edward, was very good. He was attractive, because of his persona, acting as Bella's protector, he was brooding, caring, and loving. I feel that Rob was well cast.
Bella (Kristen Stewart) also did a good job in the film. I did see some mannerisms that reminded me of Lisa Marie. The way she held her gaze, the way she watched what was going on, taking things in quietly, I can see how some people drew there comparisions to Lisa.

Thank you guys for your imput on this!
I must confess something, when I was reading the Twilight Saga, for some odd reason I pictured Elvis as Edward. Corny I know! The thing I think that caused me to do this was the "crooked smile" Stephanie Meyer says Edward has. Maybe Stephanie is an Elvis fan?

Both movies stuck pretty closely to the books. New Moon more so than Twilight. In Twilight there's this scene that they didn't put in the film that was in the book and this is where Bella has this hemophobe moment and is escorted out of class. A lot of people I know thought that it should've been in the movie. Then the director added a scene that wasn't in the book.
New Moon was more based on the book and I think it was neat how Edward wasn't just a voice in her head like in the book when she did stupid and reckless things she also saw him too. You could tell that they had a bigger budget for this movie than they did with Twilight because Edward and the other vamps looked pretty creepy which was awesome.... even though they sparkled.

Wow, that's a twist to have the hemophobic moment.
How would this fact have added to the movie, do you think? It would give us more of an idea how Bella understood Edward and the Cullens, as Bella had to go through the acceptance of blood?
What was the extra scene? :D lol
Guess what? I have something to look forward to. I haven't seen the first movie! :supriced::supriced::supriced: lol :D :lmfao:

No problem!
The extra scene was a field trip scene and Bella and Edward kinda talks here. I think that the homophobic moment could show the acceptance of blood because in Breaking Dawn [Spoiler!!] she drinks blood and doesn't get queasy over it. This is while she's still human.(She's pregnant and she's craving blood)
I just read in a People's magazine that Peter Facinelli (Plays Carlisle Cullen in Twilight) had an Elvis themed birthday party.

I see you all are chatting up TW? I see a few of you that i know have posted on here, Mistymorning, Lisarose and John, just a quick shoutout- Hello! ;)
Anyway-I just went and saw the new movie a few weeks back when it first came out. I really enjoyed this second movie more than i did the first. Not that the first was bad, by any means, but i think with a higher budget they really pulled the second one off with great flare.
I loved the wolf scenes! And i thought they really handled that well. And that scene where Edwards walks out to the sunshine in Italy. Wow, ok, that was hot! I had not really thought about the Elvis factor in his character but it is interesting and i will have to ponder that more.
And as a writer myself, i loved the ending! I love to dangle the carrot and tease just a bit. Leaving the crowd wanting more was genius! I was watching the theater-going crowd and openingly laughed when, everyone let out a big moan and than a sigh of excitement when they flashed the next movie was coming out June of 2010! It's the beauty of a great story and such a joy for an author to be able to see readers get so involved. The magic of books! Mrs. Meyers must be living on cloud nine! I'm so happy for her.
I have to share this, so i hope you'll indulge me a moment, but while i was waiting in a two hour line to see this movie with my family, I was really in awe over the amount of folks i saw standing around, some with TW tshirt on and others sitting on the floor reading the books again while they wait, for what was probably the hundreth time. I was so filled with such pride to see something i love to do, write, enjoyed on a such a grand level. I've never seen such an excitement first hand before like i have with this TW story.
My sister is a huge TW fan and over the course of the last year, i've joined her on TW conventions, and other events up here in the North West where we live. We did the location shoot tour as it's right here in my back yard. I live 15minute from the Kalama School grounds where this was shot.
Anyway, as i'm sitting there, gapping over the crowds, a sixteen year old girl that goes to church with my sister came up to me. She leans in to my ear and says, "Mrs. Garber, i just wanted to tell you how much i enjoyed your book and now i'm obessed with learning more about Elvis Presley." I think my mouth visably fell open. What a thrill and what a shock! Out of all these people here for Mrs. Meyer's great creation, one little girl, had something special to share with me. I almsot cried! So sweet and again, such a rewarding thing for an author to hear.
(Apparently my sister had given her one of my books this last summer. Thats how she got her hands on it. ;)...)
So i'm here to tell you, if Mrs. Meyers could read all these lovely posts on this thread, i know she'd feel the same way and be very moved by all your comments. All writer want nothing more than to touch their audience and this talented woman has touched so many. I'm sure she never realised how this would all go that day she sent off her work to a publisher for review. She probably expected a denial letter back, as we are all our own worse critics, rather than a knock out of park.
I heard a friend of hers told her she needed to send it off and that she was rejected once before a smaller publishing house picked her up? It was meant to be. I'm so glad they saw the light! Because now we can all enjoy it!
I'm not quite done with the last book, but i hope to get it all read before the next movie comes out so that i have a complete picture of the story in full when i go to see it.
If you haven't seen New Moon, i ecourage you to do so.
Loves everyone and happy reading!

I have two friends that are Authors. One of them just got a couple of her books published. They're both trying to get me into writing too since when I was younger my friends and I used to come up with stories all the time. Last month I participated in the NaNowrimo thing. I didn't hit the goal this year but I will try again next year.

I still have to read book 4, and I'm excited. I really loved the first 3 books, I didn't care for Twilight the Movie as much, but only because the book was so very good!
The bigger budget and new director - you could tell the difference it made.
I absolutely loved the way Jacob morphs into a wolf - wow! [He's my fav!]
The movie could have been better - but - there's only so much time to invest in a movie - I don't think I could have sat thru a 3 hour movie!!!

Hey Lisa, my friend. How are you?
I too LOVED the morphn wolf scenes! And i loved how they showed the wind blowing their fur around! Like in the scene where Jacob watches Bella dive in to the waters. You felt as if you could touch it! Amazing.
That whole part in New Moon, book and movie, is one of my favorites because it seems Mrs. Meyes and I had similar ideas when we were writing how a woman gets the attention of a man, a Vampire, or an Angel, if you will, when she's desperate. Mmmm, jump off cliffs, break in to Graceland? A similar concept. ;) You'll see. lol. You can say i was a bit surprised when i read New Moon last summer for the first time.

Elvis related fic? Sweet. I'm game!(y)
Imagination is the key, sometimes my imagination works while I'm asleep and gives me very interesting dreams. Twilight started as a dream! So far I have three stories that I've been working on one is based off a dream and I'm managing to write it in order thanks to NaNo. The other two are way out of order. Has that ever happened to you?
Good luck to you too!

Hey Lisa.
I know, i'm working my rear off trying to get this book out. I swear it seems as if it's taking forever! It will be 2010 if it kills me! (hope God isn't taking notes, just kidding.)
I would love to read some Elvis Bday thoughts if anyone has any.
I was hoping something would come to me before i hit the road for Memphis in January. Something new and inspiring that maybe i could read at Sharon Parkers MeetUp but, nothing has come. :(
I'm so busy writing in Dream Angel, nothing else seems to pop to mind. Maybe it will on the flight to Memphis. I love to write while i'm flying.
Merry Ho-Ho, everyone.

Okay, now I see what my Grandkids are going crazy over... I bought Twilight and I loved it!
I love Edwards character, though I see nothing Elvis about him. I definately can see (in my little Deer Park, Wa) way past 60 yrs old, that if I were 15 again, I'd be glued to the screen and every sequel of it!
Also like Jacob very much!
To be honest, I was leaning back in time on this film..LOL:lmfao:
well, what can I say? If Wishes were horses...
