I know that Elvis sang this song at his father's suggestion -I wonder just how familiar Elvis was with the peice? I'm sure he'd heard it since it was one of his father's favorites, I don't get the impression that Elvis was overly excited about it as he was other music- but he just does such a good job with it - perhaps because his father was in the studio? Hmm. . . :hmm:

I Love this song, one of my top favourites.
Sings it with such emotion!!!!!
This song was a #1 country hit for Conway Twitty in 1974-great song.

Definitely one of the underrated performances of Elvis' career!!! Just a great song, especially the way Elvis sings it. It's too bad it was relegated to being just an album cut during Elvis' lifetime, but I believe that Conway's version had just come out (or just hit number one) not too long before Elvis' version was released hence the reason it wasn't released as a single. :hmm:

I thought it was 'Jack to a King' that was Vernon's favourite?

I think that's just a rumor
Elvis and Conway Twitty recorded the song around the same time, and Conway's version got released as a single in 1974.
Elvis recorded it in late 73 so how would Vernon even know of the songs exsistence plus did Vernon even suggest songs to Elvis.
I've heard several people mention this story but I think it's untrue.

Elvis did Danny for King Creole, cut from the film
Conway recorded it as Little Boy Blue and had a hit record
Elvis also record You're So Square before Buddy Holly, who released it first
Elvis recorded lots of songs first, but other artists released them first and got the hit.

I would assume now and then he did-I would think most who were close to Elvis "every now and then" heard a song which they felt would be perfect for him and mentioned the title to him.
But how close he listened to others I have no clue.
