whenever i listen to the dialouge from desert storm about the drug rumours i cringe even worse is the denial from college park 74 where he blaims his weight gain-paunch on a bullett proof vest , this is mighty crazy and a man surly in denial of his probelem i love the musical tracks/performances on dessert but the dialouge is crazyand hard to listen to so what about you?

No not really. I for one don't think anyone likes to hear that they've gained weight. I know I don't. So sometimes people make excuses for it, and that might have been what he was doing with the bullet proof vest. Or he could have had one on that made him look bigger. I'm not going to deny that he had gained weight cause he had, but we don't know all what was going on. With the desert storm thing, I can understand somewhat where he might have been coming from. Like not wanting to hear you've gained weight, not many people like to hear rumors about themselves, true or not. Now I don't think by any means he was strung up on herion. I think that he was on something perhaps, and I can understand being upset and wanting to set the record straight. And I think that for the most part that's what he may have thought he was trying to do.

I never cringe when it 's about Elvis. The man had his problems, and tried to do the best he could, being who he was.

It wouldn`t be human to never lose your temper or tell yourself a lie sometime! We are all human and we make mistakes,it`s just that most of us don`t have such a huge audience to hear us.
Elvis lived his life the way he did, made his mistakes, had good times and bad just like the rest of us.

I agree with all of you.
However, if you stick up for him regarding Desert Storm, you get slated for having rose tinted glasses.
Elvis had problems, we all agree there. But, I still believe he had a right to voice his opinion. Others disagree, and say he should not have done it onstage. The problem is, is that he didn't give interviews to correct misconceptions about himself. So what's he supposed to do??

I agree. I can't understand why people won't give Elvis the benefit of the
doubt, when there is one. We don't have much from Elvis to state his side
of the stories, so why discount what he did say about things?(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)
Maybe Elvis realy did wear a bulitprove vest. Who knows. Like allready said: Elvis was a human being with his good days and bad, like we all have. And we all get our share of disapointents just like Elvis. That he shared his disappointments with the fans makes him so special, I believe. If he was sad or angry or happy he didn't pretend to be anything else.

I think if Elvis could tell us how, why when where...the yes and the no's..the truth and the lies, be it his or someone else's we would love him just the same, so why question him when he isn't able to take up for anything that's said about him?
I love him unconditionaly, and give him the benifit of the doubt. Exactly as he did to many of the MM and they were still alive.
Why do we cringe though?...I wonder this about myself, Is it because we are Elvis fans and we are identified with him or is it because we feel sorry for the man...either way I don't think it's justified, Elvis was an extraordinary entertainer and that's why we are fans, if we cringe it means he doesn't live up to an unspoken standard we set for him as a person, he spent a lot of time in public even when he shouldn't have and that's why we saw him decline in his addictions and life, these things make him human but not pitiful.

If you listen to disc 2 on the new FTD Sunset release you will cringe at some parts.
I don't think cringe is the right word in terms of my feelings listening to things such as the Desert Storm tape-perhaps sadness is better, or empathy for someone in trouble.... someone who is getting tired and lost.

I agree, it scared me more than anything. I worried about his mental state and at the same time I felt it was long past time for him to speak out about the mean spirited things that were said about him in the media.

Back in August '74, I don't think Elvis had realized that he had a problem regarding drugs. Elvis didn't see and understood that the pills he was using, had made him an addicted druguser. I think his anger was caused by the term (heroin), and he was not a user of "street narcotics". I wonder what he had said if the rumours was about the pills
that he really used. His anger had still been there, but if this was the case, he could have blamed the fu**** doctors who officially sold them to him. And maybe he had realized that this must stop much earlier than he did.

No, at those shows he's basically more honoust than he's ever been to his audience. Of course, he may have been in denial, but at least he's talking about the subject.
Pretending everything's ok to friends, family and audience, but feeling sad, lonely and miserable in his hotelroom when he was all by himself, is the opposite, but in fact, that's pretty much what everyone wanted: we pay, you entertain.

Good post.
I keep trying to state my feelings about this, but I just come across as pithy. I'll defend him, if he wanted to vent, so be it. He was an extraordinary performer living a less than ordinary life that very few people could endure. He did the best he could, I'm glad to have been along for the ride. While I wish someone could have made him see the light - it didn't happen, there it is.

If I'm discussing Elvis' faults with another fan I will be more honest.
However, if it's a non-fan..........I defend him to the hilt. Won't have anyone having a go at him without them having the full facts of why he did or say what he did

First time I heard Desert Storm I expected it to be worse than it is.......the songs are great I think and the dialogue is different to us as we are hearing it with hindsight after his death........you can tell he is mad.......at times he is very amusing.....he is having a rant....fair enough - it doesn't make me cringe.......more makes me smile a little..... Elvis the human being maybe showing some frailty after years of people seeing him as some kind of superman.....the saddest moment is Listen Cilla in It's Midnight and the rendition of Mountain.......I have heard him sound much worse on other cds......he was probably on something then, just to get him to wake up to go on stage after sleeping pills.....I don't know...but he sounds pretty coherent ...... just a man having a rant...unexpected as it wasn't something he had done before....... he was who he was and he is the man I love.....no reason to cringe
