“It all started with Elvis,” says KnuckleBonz Founder and Creative Director, Tony Simerman. “Every artist we’ve created in sculpture was impacted by Elvis in some way, whether from musicianship or performance, so special care is taken to make sure his legacy is honored.”
KnuckleBonz is highly dedicated to creating quality work. Because their statues are sold primarily to music fans and collectors, they strive to create collectibles that are not only life-like, but are also accurately depicted in pose and posture to capture a musical moment in time.
Making of the ‘Private Elvis Presley’ Rock Iconz Statue :
In preparation for creating this collectible, countless hours were spent looking at Elvis performance photography, researching filmed live shows and any footage of Elvis available, reading numerous biographies and becoming totally immersed in everything Elvis. All that initial research was followed by a visit by the design team to Graceland and a tour of Elvis' home town.
This fine-arts collectible is created in 1/9 scale, making the seated figure 7” high.
“One of the impressive details of this era in Elvis history is that unlike many celebrities that served in the military, Elvis did not request ‘special’ duty and carried out his career as just another GI,” says Tony Simerman.
Great attention is paid to the details of this era of Elvis' history, including the accuracy of everything from his 3rd Armored “Spearhead” Division patch from this time with the U.S. N.A.T.O. force, all the way to his serial number 53310761, which is printed on the top of his footlocker.
Details are never ignored. Getting the hair right on this particular piece was imperative. The hair was revised no less than 15 times to achieve just the right look. Other than when Elvis first enlisted and had his first haircut, during most of his Army career, he maintained a well groomed look that still showed his personal style to a certain degree within the standards of the US military. The KnuckleBonz artists worked diligently to re-create the styling of that period.
Even with advanced technology available, KnuckleBonz methods to creating a likeness is quite simply a fine arts and traditional sculpting approach. Creative Director, Tony Simerman, was a pioneer in computer graphics and 3D animation technology and has been in digital graphics for over 20 years in such industries as games, entertainment, and 3D software.
The unique and interesting thing about the KnuckleBonz creative process is that digital modeling is only used in the preparation phase of creating the statue. Simerman uses 3D models to achieve the pose and posture and then he art directs sculptors who work simply in clay at a very small scale, making this a traditional fine arts process. The actual sculpting is a traditional sculpting approach using clay and molds to create the limited edition statues. But by blending 3D technology with this traditional approach, KnuckleBonz achieves an incredibly life-like result.
After numerous internal reviews and critiques of the sculpture, the Elvis statue got to a point of what KnuckleBonz considered was 95% complete. The sculpture was then submitted for approval to the licensing department at Elvis Presley Enterprises. After a hand-painted version was approved, a team of talented artists hand-painted each individual figure and numbered each piece to create the premium collectible for any and all Elvis fans.
These limited edition figures just became available for shipment and can be found in select retail boutiques in the US and are sold to distributors of collectibles worldwide.
