I find it odd that we, on this board, tend not to discuss any new relevant Elvis topic : correct me if I am wrong but apart from the passing mention of these releases there has been no discussion on the merits of the track listing.

I just hope that " Young and Beautiful" is the same version that EMJ has talked about " being too good to release" and hopefully "El paso" will be in better quality than what has come out on boots, that apart I do not find very much to excite me.

Well, apart from the songs you mention, I think it's great to get some of the On Tour rehearsals in perfect sound quality!

Remember the rehearsal tracks they've already released?

See See Rider, A Big Hunk O' Love...they sound awesome!

jb, time has no meaning here. ;)

I think this release is going to be a barnburner, perhaps mainly on the merits of Y & B...if Ernst hasn't overhyped it.

Yeah Sonny I take your point. getting the tracks in good sound quality will be great.

Bobby, what did you mean by " time has no meaning ..." ?

I never said I always make sense. Forget it.

When I wrote that, it was nearly 4:00 in the morning--you people've never seen me. They'll put me in a straightjacket. Aaaaaaaaaa-ha!

AND I'M TYING IT!!!! :D ;)

Seriously...in terms of discussing the ON TOUR FTD, my main reason for not getting too involved with it right now is my limited knowledge on it....I've seen the tracklisting, and have heard Ernst's comments on Y & B, but aside from that, my knowledge is really quite limited and therefore I didn't feel I could contribute to a discussion on ON TOUR very well.

But I am DEFINITELY excited about this release, and like Bobby said, I have a feeling this one will be a TOP SELLER on the order of JUNGLE ROOM SESSIONS!!! :wiggle:

Final coverart for this FTD release

To be honoust, I'm not looking that much forward to the On Tour Rehearsals FTD (yet). I love all CD's released with the rehearsal for TTWII, because they were upbeat with Elvis experimenting with the music and setlists.

The rehearsals filmed for On Tour seemed much more staged, just like the 'fake' studiosession of 'Always On My Mind'.

But I'm going to buy it (and probably listen to it often) (y)

Well, I am looking forward to it. I have always enjoyed Elvis' music from 1972, whether it be live, rehearsals, or in the studio.

Hey Albert, agreed may be the studio scene was a "fake" but judging from Elvis' expression on hitting the low note and smiling across at JD that was not faked! Even the Gospel numbers I think they forgot about the cameras and kept singing......

Mike , have you not hear the "Lost On tour" CDs ? :supriced: anyway it will be great to listen to this set in good sound quality.

True..... Elvis wasn't fake at all and very sincere. But the event missed that sparkle that TTWII did have.

I can't wait to hear Young And Beautiful and maybe something surprising about El Paso (like the Ghost Riders In The Sky track), But one of the best things in my opinion is the GREAT version of Johnny B. Goode that is long overdue for an official release. I am looking forward to these 3 upcoming releases from FTD.

I agree, in fact I would vote this the best FTD cover to date - TMMB was good too and the Nashvile Marathon. I thought maybe they would show the whole group singing - but then the TCB band would be missing- so yes- the colours look good , maybe the picture could be a bit sharper in focus.

Unfortunately JB, I haven't heard the LOST ON TOUR series although I have seen the tracklistings for this series and it does sound like a GREAT series to have!! I've just never come across these in my import CD travels!!

He does, and the oversized font really works too. It has a very modern look to it. I seem to generally prefer the look of the FTDs that have a more retro feel, but this one is pretty cool in my book.

You should have had some sort of professional help long ago. The coffee collection took place nearly 33 years ago. All this time you have been losing sleep over this for no reason. Not only did they take up a collection to get some coffee, they also had enough to get a box of pastries. Stop worrying and get some rest. Everything turned out just fine.

I haven't watched this in quite awhile but if I remember correctly, it was Charlie Hodge who made the "collection" comment. Anyone thinking this was Elvis might want to watch it again.

You might want to check it out again. The reason that I'm saying this is that several years ago I attended an Elvis convention while I was stationed in Germany. Charlie Hodge was the guest speaker and this topic came up. Everyone was laughing about it and Charlie made some kind of joke pertaining to him saying this in the film. I remember thinking that Elvis said it and then I went an watched it again. Now I no longer think Elvis said it. Just look at it once more with this in mind before making final judgement. If I'm wrong, lunch is on me.

No way! Will definitely check that out later today. Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was Elvis.

Playing it back in my head, I can see that voice maybe being Charlie's--from the sound of it, I mean. And Elvis is turning around and walking away as it is being said. Is Charlie in the picture, and you can clearly see it's him? Even if it is, it's no wonder that some of us didn't notice that, since zeroing in on the little guy isn't something we normally do when the big guy is saying or doing something.

Sounds like a good excuse to me anyway! Carolyn, you can use it too if you like. ;)

 I think we all have mistakenly heard weird things like that before. We probably still hear certain things incorrectly and don't realize it.

It's after Elvis puts the squeeze on J.D.'s head at the end of Lead Me, Guide Me, and regarding the low note at the end, J.D. said, "That's all I could do." To which Elvis replied, "That's enough, J.D. That's enough." Then right after he said that, for all this time, I thought Elvis said, "Let's take a collection and go get some coffee." But apparently it's Charlie...I haven't had a chance to watch it after learning of this.

Mr. Songman-

Having just watched this segment again, I have to respectfully disagree.

The "let's take a collection" part sounds like it could have possibly come from Charlie, but the rest of it, including (and especially) "coffee" being broken up by laughter in the way it was, sounds strictly like Elvis to me.

The line is being spoken as Elvis is turning, very briefly facing the camera, and it appears as though he is speaking...very hard to tell from that though.

But for me, these are the clinchers:

Listen to the response to the line. It's the usual, "Elvis, that's the funniest **** thing I have ever heard in my entire life" chorus of laughter, which the exclamation would not have garnered had it come from Hodge. Also, it sounds like his laugh is among those--definitely a different laugh than the one which came from the person who was talking.

It's not a thing that Charlie, especially in that situation with the cameras rolling, would have been in the position to say. Think about it, and be realistic: Would anyone in the room likely have dared to pipe up and say what they were going to do next, while being filmed, other than Elvis? I honestly don't think so.

Elvis said it (if I'm right) as he was turning and walking away, so it just seems to fit.

Mr. Songman
12-06-2004, 09:47 PM
Sorry to disappoint you my friend, but it was Charlie who made the comment. I can't change your mind for you, I can only let you know what really happened. You'll have to think what you will. In most cases, you are probably right on the money, however, this is not one of them.

Lonniebealestreet
12-06-2004, 09:59 PM
You may be right. I'm not saying I'm positive, but if I were a betting man, my money would be on it being Elvis.

The fact that Charlie made a joke about it being him at a convention doesn't sell me on that.

So that I can see it your way (and if I do, I'll readily admit it), tell me what to look or listen for in that segment that makes you so certain.

So Carolyn, after watching it again, you absolutely believe it to be Charlie? BTW, what was the first thing that shook you up recently when you found out about it?

Mr. Songman
12-07-2004, 03:05 AM
When I said in an earlier post that I "thought" it was Charlie, I wasn't serious. I knew it was Charlie. I was trying to break the news to the little lady as easily as I could. I have always known it was Charlie. It is obviously Charlie's voice. He sounds nothing like Elvis. Charlie often spoke up. He didn't care if the cameras were rolling or not. He was known as the "class clown." Just listen to him during the 1968 comeback special. He makes comments all through it, so it wasn't like he would be afraid to say something without getting Elvis' permission first. Listen to him say "No, we're on a train bound for Tulsa." It is the same voice that says "Let's take a collection and go get some coffee." Like I said, I cannot change the minds of those who think that Elvis made the comment, but for the life of me I don't see how anyone could get the two mixed up. There are other message boards that have asked the same question but this is the first I have ever seen where some actually think that Elvis made the comment. By the way....Elvis could be very funny at times but he doesn't hold a candle to Charlie as a comic. I saw Charlie in Pidgeon Forge, Tennessee a couple of years ago and he had people rolling in the aisles. I'm finished here but I'll say it one last time before I go. Charlie made the comment and not Elvis.

carolynlm
12-07-2004, 04:38 PM
Hey Lonnie,
I have played this back at least 2 dozen times, and I'm convinced now it's Charlie who makes the comment. I wasn't all that pleased when I really looked at the footage again because I have thought for years that it was Elvis' :king: line.
It's more than likely a ploy on the editors part to have us think it was a quip made by Elvis :king: . With all the new software available now, there are probably more 'surprises' in store for me as regards Elvis :king: , none that I will relish. I have certain things in my mind as regards Elvis :king: and even if I am not correct, I don't really want any more surprises.
Charlie sure did have a big mouth, didn't he? During the '68 Special, as well as TTWII, 'Charlie, quit telling me the (name of) the next song'......and now during the Aloha DVD's.....and his singing during the EIC spoils things....I'm glad Elvis :king: gave him the job of handing him the scarves, at least it kept Charlie away from the mic for a while. :king:

Lonniebealestreet
12-07-2004, 05:13 PM
I agree that if it's not Elvis...and OK, it likely isn't, it certainly seems intended to make the viewer think that it is. The factors I named above make me think it too. It sounds like Charlie, but it doesn't sound entirely unlike Elvis either.

I'll accept that you all are right. Kudos to those of you with the keen observation skills...I had thought I was one of you! ;)
