Sorry Elvis, Michael is the real king
(Source: AP)
After Elvis Presley (http://www.elvis.com/) died on August 16, 1977, he became the biggest entertainment icon ever. However, he has been overshadowed by Michael Jackson (http://www.michaeljackson.com/us/home), who died on June 25, 2009. Michael is now the real king.
Perhaps part of the reason for this is because Michael, unlike Elvis, had a lot of talent. Michael Jackson might have acted strangely (and in some cases, pathetically) but he was able to sing, dance, play instruments and write songs. Elvis did the same things, but came across more as an amateur.
Perhaps the myth and legend of Elvis is starting to fade away just as it is with Marilyn Monroe (http://www.marilynmonroe.com/). They were icons for years after their deaths but as time went on, their myths started to come apart. Michael Jackson will be remembered long after these two.

I know for sure that I will never forget Elvis. And Iīm sure in 30 years are so, thereīs still be a lot of Elvis fans. And I bet, if people donīt believe everything what others say, then in 30 years are so, there will be more Elvis fans than Michael Jackson fans. And for me Elvis will always be the best, no matter what others say!!! I actually donīt have anything against Michael Jackson, but everytime I read such things I get so angry and think means things about Michael, but itīs not his fault. Or did he ever say he would be better than Elvis? If yes, then tell me, then I have a reason to hate him.

On articles like this one, you have to consider the source! Obiously this was written by
a MJ fan, with some axe to grind with Elvis. If this is not the case, then we have to
assume this person lives in a state of debilitated mental faculties. TMO!

It's funny how entertainers are always measured to Elvis. "He was bigger than Elvis. He was better than Elvis". Well, doesn't that say it all?
Have you ever heard anybody say they were bigger than Michael Jackson?

Hands down Michael was a better dancer than Elvis. However, Elvis was a way better singer. As for the shows, Elvis could capture an audience by his presence. He didn't need to be shot out of a cannon or leave the stage with a rocket on his back to get peoples attention.
Also, all of the music Michael made was the same style. Elvis could do any type of song and make it his own.
I like Michaels songs and play them now and then, but he will never come even close to Elvis in any way.

And anyway, I don't see the need to compare them at all. Some people like Elvis, some like Michael Jackson and some like both. Why not just leave it at that?

i see no comparison with micheal j and ELVIS, the 2 of them were very different in so many ways and not being biased here but elvis was a HAPPENING in music mj was just another entertainer. mj said himself they will be playing elvis presley songs when the world won't even remember who i was. THESE WERE HIS OWN WORDS.

This is simply Sue Bergerstein's opinion, who is trying to sell the article for the company who employs her.

Simple as that.

Both were talented men in their own ways, in their own genre's and there is heaps of room for both.

Neither Elvis nor Michael should be disrespected, in my opinion. It all goes back again, to Sue Bergerstein's opinion, whoever she is. (n)(n)(n) (I don't care), however, I do care about Elvis and I do care about Michael.

Agreed kim, they were diffrent ends of the spectrum... but one thing that they were both good at was attracting the many fans they had who loved them for who they were, not what they become.

We have to look at this in a calm logical manner, and yes that is difficult.
Crap on the person who wrote the article straight off!
I have never seen MJ play a musical instrument either. Unless it was a bangle or whatever they are called?
Two seperate worlds we have here.
The King is the KING! Michael however does not deserve to be put down, after dying, (rather being accidentally murdered?) he was a sweet man, a child like person with a broken spirit, much like Elvis at some point.
I do not believe he molested any child not ever!
At any rate, Elvis died(>) in 1977 and he is more popular than anyone I know on earth. MJ just recently died..so as far as pixels or patronizing remarks goes, Elvis is holding steady and firm, standing tall and proud.
Nothing to fight about here. They were both very talented, though I cannot see Elvis ever being a "Crotch grabber" I too felt this was not needed to be popular, but it's the times we live in..the moonwalk, the glove, bizzare appearance, and such. Side by side in the same era..Elvis would make people ask Michael who? So don't sweat it, but please, John Carpenter, don't trash a man who sang "We are the world"

Michael loved children..most of them he allowed to slep in his bed were cancer patients... he would not have harmed a child for any reason.
Do you think for one moment in time that Lisa Marie would have married a pedophile!? Not on your life.
Now we can agree that Elvis is the KING... of Rock and Roll..actually his own words was that he was not a King, only Jesus Christ was a King, he is "Just an enteratiner" How humble, how kind and loving...
Michael was indeed the king of pop. I liked him very much, and hurt for the horrid position he was in, and much of it thanks to a lousey father.

Of all the comments in the article, the one that really made me angry was the part that "Elvis had no talent"!!?? How pathetic this can be. Is it possible that a person with no talent could have lasted for so long as the greatest entertainment and is still remembered and worshipped by so many people in the whole world? And If Elvis had no talent, why this person that wrote the article ever bothered to write about Elvis comparing him with Michael in the first place? I can't deal with such things any more.

The Way i see it, Michael Jackson stopped touring what 1997 ? He was finished a has been, You could mention the new "This Is It Tour" But everybody & their dog knew this would never happen.......Where Elvis on the other hand performed right until the very end.

To me that shows there was no comparison. I'll remember Elvis for the rest of my life....Im sure as hell won't remember MJ in the same regard as my hero.

Well said Hexia. I don't understand the fuss about MJ. There are many more great dancers and also good singers. So what's so special about MJ? He even had a voice coach for crying out loud (something that Elvis never needed.) So who's better. And they're two different styles and area's that you can't compare. I always say: Elvis was a natural talent and MJ was created. We'll prove in time that Elvis was and still is the best. Just don't give up and keep his memory alive. We have to think of things that put Elvis in te news in a positive way.

Having re-read the initial article I can only conclude the individual who wrote it is in their teens or early 20's to hold such an infantile view :hmm:

I actually like some of the stuff Jackson did, he wasn't talentless, he was a great artist in his heyday. Just because you like Elvis doesn't mean you have to denigrate another artist. Two artists can coexist.

The problem we have is that Elvis' demise brought about the drug stories, the weight & private life etc. On the other hand Michael's demise was brought about in his own lifetime with his own actions and peculiarities.

Each has individual merits, each has meteoric careers, we should shoot the messenger not the message in this case

This tells us more about the author... errr... It does only tell about the author. Did I mention the author?

Friends, when one writes these ludicrous articles all we have to do is laugh.

It simply makes no sense at all, and if they are in their right minds, it also makes no sense to a true Jackson fan. The man was talented, that's for sure.
But comparing the artists in this way, makes no sense whatsoever.

Comparisons like this are useless-MJ fans and those of his generation will see him as a true King and we see Elvis in that light.
But to call Elvis an amatuer is ridiculous.
Elvis never demanded to be called the King of Rock-but MJ is reported to have done so when he was doing projects with MTV.
MJ seemed to worry overtly about how he would be seen and he wanted to be known as the biggest and the best-he contrived to project that.
The Guinness Book 2009 even notes that the biggest selling album in the world was Thriller with 55 million in sales according to Sony and RIAA-but it also notes that MJ management claim worldwide sales of 104 million which is unsubstantiated.
You'd think in the history of music sales that in todays world of computerized sales tracking there would only be controversy about artists like Elvis and the Beatles whos sales were not so well tracked and documented inthe 50s and 60s-but MJ to claim double what his own record company has said-thats pretty bold.

I have been bothered by this whole 'MJ thing' almost from the beginning.

It seems so contrived and slickly promoted by the media and dare I say, IMO, some of the Jacksons.

Clips of MJ's staged 'private' funeral showed his three children placing a CROWN on top of his coffin. Details of the service were freely given and then one of the brothers pens a letter to the media expressing dismay at the invasion of privacy. News articles report Elizabeth Taylor thought it would be a private funeral and had no indication she would be photographed. This morning I read about the tribute concert being planned for Oct. in Vienna - a huge CROWN will be part of the stage display in some way. It also said Michael Jackson 'changed the history of music.' And of course, the 'great humanitarian' angle was also used.

Elvis is an original.

His popularity and growth occurred organically.

So, I just sit back and watch the MJ circus continue........

:king:

I saw that too!

Michael Jackson took the King of pop moniker too seriously.

naming his kids prince and then his family putting a crown on his coffin.

It was just a nickname.

So you're saying Elvis Presley isn't as good as ... I can't even say it ... Josh Groban?! :supriced::lmfao::lol::lmfao::supriced::supriced:

And you agree with that?!! :supriced::supriced:

Mark my words: The year 2011 ... Groban won't have been seen on the charts in two years, and he'll be the answer to a music trivia question.

I mean, really!

OMG, Getlo, we are on a run, time for each of us to buy a raffle ticket (y)(y)(y):D

Don't worry guys. Elvis died over 30 years ago. Michael Jackson hasn't been dead 30 minutes.

Save this conversation for 2040 and see how big MJ is then compared to Elvis now.

You have to remember too the fans gave Elvis the name of The King of Rock N Roll.MJ gave himself the name on the king of pop.To me that says alot.MJ was talented I will give him that,he also idolized Elvis.Elvis could play instruments, and given the chance i would guess could dance too and I dont consider grabbing your crotch dancing.Dont get me wrong I liked MJ obviously not as well as Elvis though.

i think there was a lotsa grabbing going on there on Elvis' side to... not while dancing or on stage tho... rofl ... anyway what's wrong with that?? Michael was one of the most talented entertainers ever! including both singing and dancing (grabbing or not).... who can do a better moon walk? :hmm:

I just love the way all these bands and solo artists are compared to Elvis in popularity when it comes to being an icon.

I'm So Sorry this is lengthy but I just could not let them say that about Elvis. They want a comparison, here it is.

"Michael, unlike Elvis, had a lot of talent?" Even though when I was little I was impressed with Micheal's voice,in his Jackson 5 days, and still now but that is what always stood out to me, his Singing when he was younger and his dancing is what stood. I wasn't even surprised at that MTV BIlly Jean dance he did, cause it was common knowledge that he could dance.

Talent List

[Elvis Presley_Note that in the days of Elvis growing up there wasn't any video tape machines, home tape recorders or internet. His source was his radio, records, movies theaters, church, clubs, Beal Street and some TV. Elvis also didn't have a family member who had some knowledge of the music business and was self disciplined in learning. That's not to mention the fact that, when Elvis started out he took a lot beating for singing in a way that wasn't excepted by the general audience-

1_Creator of a Music Style that was never heard: ROCKABILLY.

2_Contributed to the development of, Rock n Roll music, so much that no other artist of that era came close to the sound of his early RCA recordings also Dubbed the KING OF ROCK N ROLL, by the fans and the media. Also singing different styles in their original form. Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Rhythm and Blues, Ballads, Raga, Opera, Country, Blue Grass, Urban, European, Spanish, Italian, German, Christmas and Folk.
ESTABLISHED BALLAD SINGER_While being known as a Rocker, he then shocks the world by singing,LOVE ME TENDER, on national Television. The general public, even non-Elvis fans, love it and Elvis went on recording beautiful ballads. One of his greatest achievements, It's Now Or Never.
ESTABLISHED GOSPEL SINGER_even though in the days of Elvis, Rock n Roll was no where to be seen as a category at the Grammy Awards but Elvis get's three under, Gospel. How Great Tho Art, LP, He Touched Me, LP and How Great Tho Art, single.
Elvis' voice gets more Powerful and Refined with age.

3_ACTOR_ For a 21 year old who's never acted in Hollywood before, Elvis stars in his first move, Love Me Tender. In the movie industry producers are usually afraid of letting first timers take the screen for a full feature movie. Fearing that they can't hold the public's attention for that long. That was the least of Elvis' problems, in fact it became the downfall for his dreams of becoming a serious actor. Taking advantage of selling a soundtracks and they even use Elvis to invest in bigger budget movies that don't star him. Even so, Elvis proves he is worth the investment and the producers sign him up for a total of 31 movies and 2 documentaries. Before Elvis, there was no guidelines to go by in a way Elvis was the first Pop star and is often used as lessons kerned of the do's and don't's of the business..
But Elvis did rack in the tickets and soundtrack sales and proves to be a great actor by the time he makes his forth movie, KING CREOLE and is noted as a good comedy actor for his work on, Follow That Dream.

4_REINVENTING THEMSELVES_His 50's image, what was considered then, long Sideburns, & long hair, Pink Jacket, Gold suit is traded in for his Army Uniforms. I know it was standard but they used this image over and over throughout his movie career. Then after his return from the Army. His image is conservative and very clean cut. Then Elvis shocks the public in 1968. He drops his commercially accepted image and dons a Leather suit. 1970 the public sees another new Elvis in a documentary, That's The Way It Is. He's now in a White Karate style Gi, Jumpsuit. His hair and sideburns longer. Other than his early 50's image, this will be the image he's recognized for most.

5_PLAYING INSTRUMENTS_Elvis played, Guitar, Bass Guitar and Piano. I know fans on here know this but most are under the impression that Elvis faked playing the Guitar. We see him playing Guitar in the 1968 special, acoustic and electric. He played bass on, 'You're so Square" and went on to study it in the mid sixties. We have home recordings and see Elvis playing Piano on Change of Habit, briefly on That's the way it is, out takes and 1977 Rapid City, Unchained Melody.

6_WRITER ARRANGER PRODUCER_ Elvis is credited for some songs in his career but he mostly came up with the concepts of a few and his friends would complete them. Their names are on the writing credits as well. Arranger, his whole career from day one. Producer, noting the producer wasn't a must to put on LPs until late 60s but Elvis gets credit in his last two LPs.

9_Dance Style_Elvis known for his shaking of the leg and body shifting, Inspired by the Black artist' of that time and was old news for the Jazz Scene but Elvis made it world wide. Elvis was most remembered for his Jailhouse Rock dance in 1957. in later years it's all about Karate style moves but still the leg never stopped shakin'.
----------------------------------------------------------

Talent List

Micheal Jackson- Micheal's father was involved in the music business and coached him every step of the way in fact beat him till he got it right. Micheal had guidance and access to a tape recorder before stardom.

1_Creator of a Music Style that was never heard: None

2_Contributed to the development of_Motown AKA Rhythm and Blues, Ballad, Inspirational (non-gospel), Jazz, Blues, Christmas, Disco and Dance Beats also mixing Mixing Rock with Disco on the song, BEAT IT. Having Eddie Van Hallen play guitar on it.Dubbed, The King Of Pop, by his friend, Liz Tayor.
ESTABLISHED COMMERCIAL POP SINGER_Micheal broke grounds with his stage act from the time he stepped into public eye. He was dubbed, Little Man, by newspaper cause they couldn't believe that was a kid singing but to be honest to me it was all reminiscent of, Frankie Limon when he started out. There really wasn't any ground breaking new sound other than the beat that doesn't take away from the fact that Micheal can sing but as he gets older, the power notes and the focus of impressing the audience comes from the production of the show more than his voice. He doesn't mature as a vocalist. In fact he takes the back seat when it comes to singing.

3_ACTOR_ Other than revolutionizing the MTV Video industry with his Thriller video, with a cool story line and high dollar production there is no real acting going on here. No producers would ever think Jackson's acting could hold the attention of a theater audience for 2 hours unless it was a documentary and constant dance going on.

4_REINVENTING THEMSELVES_The Jackson 5 image and sound was already established by other Motown artists. THRILLER, zipper jacket and high water pants, Jerry Curl hair and Let's not forget the Glove after that the BAD image but it looks very close to Thriller and he's not black anymore. He's a White Man with thin hair. The Fro is gone. Stage act the same except he grabs his crouch constantly. This is at a time when he's marketing himself to the younger audience.
Micheal gets whiter and his nose disappears with age and ends up being very grotesque to look at at times.

5_PLAYING INSTRUMENTS_Never seen Micheal play an instrument. Seen him poke at a piano note but never a complete song or even a melody, my kid could do that. He claimed he makes beats with his mouth and sounds that's how he writes.

6_WRITER ARRANGER PRODUCER_ If Micheal wrote all the songs he says he wrote, he surpasses Elvis in song writing. Arranger, I would call it even but what LPs or projects are remembered more? Elvis was very involved in the early days and Memphis sessions in the late 60s that produced lots of hits.

9_Dance Style_VERY ESTABLISHED DANCER, yes, and extremely talented in his moves. Very creatively took the JAILHOUSE ROCK dance production and build a whole Concert theme around it. But was it him or Modonna that started this? Chicken/Egg question. All pop shows today copy this format. The MOONWALK, I know he made it popular but growing up in the ghetto, I remember seeing kids that where break dancing and would do this move and Micheal was even giving them credit when he first did it. Still Micheal made it what it is today. Micheal would out dance Elvis any day but Elvis was never a dancer, he was someone who moved when he sang with the music.

I think that nothing can compare with Elvis because no one can understand him !
