I like Jerry, and bass players in general, but this isn't overly bad.

Jerry could easily be replaced, although I'd like to have seen Duke Bardwell come in. Or another bass player who may have worked with Elvis.

Any single member of the TCB Band could be replaced at the drop of a hat.

With the exception of James Burton, of course.

Once he goes, the TCB Band is dead as far as I'm concerned.

The end of the world is nigh.. I agree with you about something!

Agree with Getlo about James.

He's good.. real ****ing good! His style is impossible to reproduce and he's such a nice guy.

You probably didn't know about my top secret plans to kidnap James, so that I have the lead guitar player who does whatever I WANT. Don't worry; with me everything's easy. I only need a yes or no - if he refuses I'll hold the entire world ransom at the cost of James' favorite guitars! :supriced:

Wonder if it had anything to do with his health? No, some of these guys partied hard and now at their age who could put up with the constant touring.
Would hate to see James leave - Fabian, not the Pink Paisley!?!

Yes, even though I love James, when he toured here to Australia last time (2006) and used another guitar rather than the pink paisley, it just wasn't quite the same.

I asked him about it, and he simply said that, as a guitarist, his latest guitar was just where he was at.

I dont think its going to last much longer i mean they have been going for 12 years now, that is 5 more years than they worked with elvis.

Pink colored guitars are a girl's best friend.. ;)

Anyway.. at least James is going to have to stay. Aren't there other artists out there who like to work with him?

I met Jerry around the 30th Anniversary in Memphis and he was a lovely guy.
He's struggled with hearing problems for a long time so that may have contributed to his decision.

Personally, I think the live version of Suspicious Minds without Jerry is a pretty daunting prospect. Sure, James' riff is a classic and Ronnie is always dynamite but what Jerry brought to the second half of that number was extraordinary. He was always the 'seriously groovy' element in the band and I'd really miss him in that lineup.

James no longer uses the paisley telecaster anymore. He basically 'retired' it in 1991. And as far as Jerry not going on the ETC European tour, here is the answer (Courtesy of Brian Quinn at FECC and Elvis Unlimited):

Elvis Unlimited spoke exclusively with Jerry Scheff last night during the Elvis 69 concert. And Jerry has confirmed to us that he will not be on the tour with Elvis The Concert in Europe. But Jerry says that does not mean the TCB band is breaking up. Jerry tells us the band is recording with Dennis Jale in the next coming days. And will be traveling to Brazil to perform as well. So despite the rumors, this will not be the last time you see or hear the TCB band together!

So, according to this, Jerry is only sitting out this portion of the European tour and he's not quitting the TCB band altogether.

Jerry could easily be replaced

Having had time to consider it, anyone who says Jerry could be easily replaced on the likes of Patch It Up is a ****ing nutter. ;)

Please.

Jerry's a fine player, no doubt, but playing the bass isn't rocket science, even when compared to playing lead.

Bass is second fiddle (to mix musical metaphors) to the lead guitar, and always will be.

Rhythm is a very distant third and virtually unnecessary (with all due respect to John Wilkinson who, from an audio standpoint wasn't missed in Elvis the Concert at all, although everyone missed him personally).

Jerry or whomever ... no difference at all.

Do you play?

Anyway, I agree with your metaphors here and the hierarchy of importance etc, but I do think people will miss Jerry's contribution more than they might expect. He's more than your average player. Naturally, it wouldn't be as conspicuous as James being absent but bass occupies the listener's consciousness in a slightly different way.

I'm sure if they had to they could replace any of the original musicians but then to me it would never be the same.

Well there's definitely a sentimental value to having the original line-up and at the end of the day, these recent TCB shows are as much about nostalgia as they're about the music.
If any of the principal players were absent I'd definitely feel a little deflated.

Exactly because it defeats the purpose of the elvis concerts, which should be to have the original people who were there with Elvis when he was on stage, without them theres no show imo.

What befuddles (confuses) me is why was Portia Griffin (of the Sweet Insprations) included in the 25th anniversary concert? She never once worked for Elvis! :hmm::hmm:

Because one of the Sweets (Sylvia, I think, though I may be wrong) has been sick for many years with heart problems and other maladies.

Thanks for the update Tony!!! I was beginning to think the unthinkable...that the TCB-Band may finally be parting ways... :'(

I know it's something that will happen one day, but just hate to think of that day coming... :'(

I have to agree with you on that.
To replace any of the original band musicians, it would never be the same.
But then again, they are all get old.
There has to be a time when they say, that this is it.
And that time will come.

Elvis said that phrase on more than one occasion in '69-'70 and it got (and still gets) very boring very quickly when listening to the intros during the early concerts - that's probably why he stopped doing it.

That pink paisley was such a beautiful guitar, its sad he quit using it. My little garage band thought it was the ultimate in style and class.
I think James was the glue that held the basic rhythm groups sound.

Not completely, as he definitely used it in Australia in 1999 when Elvis The Concert first came out.

But in 2006 on their return ... the guitar was different and a small part of the magic was gone.

I'd still go to see the show, but only so long as James was there.

Without James, it's not the TCB Band. All of the others (with the exception of John Wilkinson and, er, Charlie Hodge) had been replaced on and off by Elvis over the years he was touring. So they're all interchangeable, even today.

But not my man James!

Wasn't he 70 the other day? Brings it home just how long Elvis has been gone.

I saw the show without Ronnie Tutt, and it was still **** good.

However, what was said is also true, if that TCB band is not complete, for the real fans it has a diffrent feel to it.

We all want Scheff right next to James on that stage, so this European tour will have a different feel to it for most real Elvis fans.
