I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this is one of, if not THE, main reasons for the low attendance at Elvis Week this year! As we've discussed elsewhere on the board, not only has the cost for travel, lodging and food gone up, but EPE doesn't seem to care about that and just continues to soak the fans by charging more and more for the Graceland tour, exhibits, activities, souveniers, etc. Sadly, with all of that taking place, I think fans are just having to make tough choices between making the trip and staying home... :'(

Perhaps more fans will start coming in toward the end of the week, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see a drastic decline in attendance this year when Elvis Week is over... (n)

Maybe, if attendance is low this year, EPE will wise up and lower their prices.
It would be better for them to make less $$$ than none at all.:D:D:D

That is a wonderful theory and SHOULD be how things are handled if there is a serious decline in attendance this year...

Sadly though, I just don't think EPE get's it and things will continue as they are until something MAJOR happens... (n)

For instance, somewhere else in the forum, I read a post from a member who said that the area that used to be the garage where they now display additional memorabilia is no longer part of the regular tour....only if you purchase the VIP package. If that is indeed true, that is an injustice to Elvis fans!!! And now we have the additional $15 charge to tour the stables...UNBELIEVABLE!!! :cursing:

As I said, sadly I think it's going to take some catastrophic event to get EPE to change their policies about continuously increasing their rates for everything...and by then, it could be too late to fix things...and THAT would be the ultimate injustice to Elvis' fans and his legacy!!! :'(

It does seem odd that it's so quiet there..
Let us know if that changes.

Have fun!

I read that too, Mike. It's nuts! (n)

I agree. It will surely have to take some catastrophic event, but with this being Elvis Week, you would think they would have done something abut their rates...

I couldn't make it for Elvis Week but I have a layover for work in Memphis next week and plan on going back then.

This certainly would be the most opportune time to do something and make a statement that EPE was going to hold their rates steady or (even better) decrease them to help out Elvis fans during this downturn in the economy. With all the increased publicity being focused on Memphis and Graceland this week, making a statement like that would really be a big deal for EPE I would think... :hmm:

Instead, they just keep increasing everything and continuing to stick it to the fans every which way they can...what a tragedy! As I've said countless times before, I know it's a business but there must be other ways to decrease business costs so that EPE doesn't have to keep raising their prices...perhaps a little less money spent on production of some souvenirs might be an answer?? I just got the latest Elvis Week souvenir catalog in the mail...how many people really need to spend $50 on a pair of Elvis car floor mats...or $99.95 on a 15" "That's All Right Teddy Bear"...or $69.99 on a pair of women's pajamas??? Yes these are nice items and I am sure there are fans out there that are thrilled to buy them, but perhaps less money could have been spent RIGHT NOW on the development of those items so that the money could have been saved and, because of that savings, the fans could have been the recipients of decreased prices to tour Graceland!!! Just my two cents... :hmm:

In any case, I honestly believe that EPE won't bother doing anything about this situation until the day comes when all that is seen on Elvis Presley Boulevard during Elvis Week are some lone tumbleweeds blowing down the street accompanied with the sounds of silence... :'( :'( :'(

I was on Beale Street Sunday during the day, and you're right, it didn't seem like there were as many people as in years past. I went on the Elvis Hound Dog Tour which gave a tour of the places Elvis frequented throughout his life. They even dropped us off at Sun Studio for that tour, which I must admit, is MUCH better than it was over 10 years ago when I last did that. We are now free to walk around the studio and touch instruments. They also have a big exhibit of Sun Studio's artists and history that I don't remember being there before.

Anyone else here been on the Hound Dog Tour?

Yes, I was on that tour once and I enjoyed visiting all those Elvis related places.

You're right about everything you said, Mike. :notworthy Unfortunately, EPE can't get past their own GREED! It's sad, but true. I really don't think anything will change until, as you stated "the day comes when all that is seen on Elvis Presley Boulevard during Elvis Week are some lone tumbleweeds blowing down the street accompanied with the sounds of silence..:'(:'(:'("

Believe me franny, it saddened me to write that statement....but that is what I truly believe in my heart that it is going to take something horrible like that to convince EPE that they need to do something different... :'(
