The sound is better, and the pamphlet is beautiful, with a ton of info! FEIM was the first EP album I bought as a 10 year-old boy in 1970, so it means much more to me then some other releases.

The sound is better, and the pamphlet is beautiful,
But what exactly do you mean by "better"?
I have a great stereo, and I can't see how digital remastering - again! - of such tracks would be all that different.
And, even though I have all the outtakes on bootlegs - the set is a rip-off considering there's nothing unreleased on it, IMO.

The set is great and a must for those getting to know Mr. Presley and their Elvis CD collection is about some great hits compilations like Second to None, or thematic stuff like any of the many Country, Love Songs, or gospel stuff.
It is not intended to surprise any die hard fans as most of us in this forum that sickly collect any outtake containing Elvis burping before someone says Ok this is Take 12.
These are just masters takes, the album will stand out well in the catalogue along with the Elvis at Sun or Elvis '56, for starters that wants to go beyond compilations and go into a certain period in Elvis career. (Although yes we already had Sunrise and Suspicious Minds with a deeper look on that period, but hey that was a decade ago)
For something new, we got FTD, and I'm hoping for an Elvis in Memphis on the classic albums editions on a near future. Hopefully, as Im NOT at all buying these new memphis anthology.
Yep certainly am, sounds like it will be great....
Im still debating it.I also wonder just how improved the sound is.I will probably get it "just because".Nothing wrong with supporting "new" Elvis releases.I only hesitate because I have the material on so many other releases.

You're right to be suspicious. 'Remastering' has become a device for marketing back-catalogue with no inherent guarantee of improvement in the sound.
Strictly-speaking, there's as much chance of it sounding worse as there is of it sounding better, given the nature of the mastering process.
The promotional stickers should probably read 'Remarketed'.
While it is generally a good idea for old records to be mastered again for optimum quality on a new format, like CD, to do so yet again is really just mucking about and a transparent attempt to make people buy the same thing twice. Or three times.
One thing which modern mastering technology has done successfully is to make records 'louder', but I'm guessing you already have a volume knob on your stereo, right? ;)

I don't have a clue about 'extra' digital remastering, leave all the analysis to FECC, those boys on there love it!!!!!!!
It sounds good to me, any better than previous releases, I don't know.
Nice to have both albums together, and all 32 tracks.

I have a question for any of you with this CD.
One of my favourite songs in gentle on my mind and one of the later verses has a backing vocalist doing a couple of tasty country vocal runs. It was mixed high in the mix for the mid 80's memphis sessions CD but has been almost inaudible on mixes since. Please tell me they pushed it up in the mix on this release.
Will order this CD regardless though.
Thanks,
TP

I just had my first listen of the new set and it is MAGNIFICENT!!!! (y)
Even though I would hardly call myself an audiophile, the advancement in sound quality between SUSPICIOUS MINDS (the last '69 anthology CD) and FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS - LEGACY EDITION is simply breathtaking! As I made my way through the CD's, I was easily reminded why this music was critically acclaimed and why I love it so much!!!
The improvement in sound quality on tracks like LONG BLACK LIMOSUINE, IT KEEPS RIGHT ON A' HURTIN', GENTLE ON MY MIND and POWER OF MY LOVE is outstanding. When Elvis sings "I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin' cracklin' cauldron in some train yard" on GENTLE ON MY MIND, the clarity of the improved sound quality just makes lines like that one all the more poignant. And I dare anyone to listen to the improved quality of LONG BLACK LIMOSUINE and not feel like you're standing there with Elvis watching the procession drive by!!
Yes, there is nothing new in this set for the die-hard fans (like me) like unreleased alternate takes, and I must admit I was hesitant to listen to the new FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS when I was perfectly satisfied having all the '69 Memphis Sessions in one neat compilation on SUSPICIOUS MINDS, but my curiosity got the better of me and I gave FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS a listen...and I will say that I would have been depriving myself of a purely magnificent audio experience if I had not listened to it!!
TWO THUMBS UP for the new FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS - LEGACY EDITION!! (y) (y)

I wasn’t too enthusiastic when I first received the FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS LEGACY CD thinking the sound was flat (I couldn’t have been more wrong!) It has since grown on me: the sound is fantastic and that enhances all the tracks, some I never really knew very well before; it’s like a completely new album – “Wearing That loved On look” has a wonderful gospel piano towards the end. Other standouts are the deep soul on “Long Black Limousine” which has never sounded better; the country swagger of “It Keeps Right On A Hurtin” – blues powerhouse “Power Of My Love” and the fantastic organ on “I’ll Be There.”
The piano sounds great on this release; listen to the gorgeous tinkling on the bluesy “If I’m A Fool For Lovin You.” Additionally Elvis’ vocals are clearer with the lyrics much more audible.
Disc two includes the BACK IN MEMPHIS ALBUM and it’s a delight! The dreamy “Inherit The Wind” & “This is the Story” sound great here before the blues tour-de-force “Stranger In My Home Town” kicks in, and it’s awesome with great ad libs! – “funky Wild Man!” Turn your volume right up!
The album ends with 10 mono versions of classics “Suspicious minds”, “Don’t Cry Daddy” and “Kentucky Rain” amongst others and all sound superb.
SONY have released an absolute classic that sounds better than ever here with the re-mastered sound being the key;drums, piano and vocals all shine plus great trumpets and horns which jump out of your speakers making it an essential release, plus great packaging – fans old and new are sure to discover something new here. It really is that awesome!

IMO The Memphis Sessions by FTD is better than this re-mastered version. Yes the sound is improved, but the overdubs are still there! To me the overdubs takes away from Elvis' voice. The Memphis Sessions by FTD has an unplugged feeling to it that reveals a lot more of Elvis' vocals than this latest release. I've got it to go into the collection.
I defy anybody to say that the official recording of Suspicious Minds is better than the Take 6 Version from the Memphis Sessions without all the hoopla added, Elvis sounds absolutely fantastic with his voice up front.

Yes. Call me old-fashioned, but all I need is music in basic stereo - not too much bass or treble - and everything balanced within the room; even sound left and right.
To me, none of the other buttons on modern stereos are even necessary.
All those audiophiles sitting around fiddling and fiddling just gives me the irrits.

What they should have done is given us all the '69 masters (and a few outtakes if there was room). Three discs would have done it.
An update of the Suspicious Minds anthology set, if you will.
Let me guess ... they'll remaster Back In Memphis next!

"Back in Memphis" is on CD-2 of the new Legacy release!
The best way to hear Elvis is probably on vinyl with an expensive hi-fi but failing that CDs suit me just fine and if there mastered with the best possible sound – a la the FEIM LEGACY 2-CD Edition, then I'm rockin.' (y)

The last 10 tracks on disc two are the ORIGINAL MONO SINGLE VERSIONS, so they supposedly sound just as they did when the were released on 45 singles back in '69 & '70...but personally, I found that even these mono singles sounded better (at least to my ears)... :hmm:
So yes, there is a difference between these 10 "mono" singles and the rest of the CD, but certainly not enough (in my opinion) to not recommend adding this album to your collection!!! (y)

I prefer Elvis' voice like you, pure and at the front.
Suspicious Minds on FTD Memphis Sessions is b***** fantastic. You can hear the soulful, pleading, with all the pent up emotion aching trying to get her to understand...............makes the hairs stand up on my arms!!!!!
I cannot understand why he had to have all the orchestration behind him, rhythmn group is more than enough.

Sorry to disagree Mike, there is a huge difference between mono and stereo, in particular the versions of 'In The Ghetto', to me the mono version is not as good as the stereo because obviously the sound coming from each speaker is identical. The nuances picked out by the stereo version make it far superior. JMO though

As I said, there is a difference between the mono and remastered versions and it is definitely more noticable at times than others, but I wouldn't not buy the set just because of the inclusion of those 10 singles in mono sound.

100% agreed on that, I believe there are some subtle differences even in the stereo versions here that warrant spending your dough on. One thing I am disappointed on though, there is still some slight background hiss that they obviously cannot get rid of on certain tracks :hmm:

it's a great set.
the packaging is fantastic. it's like a 7" FTD, but in regular CD size.
i was afraid that since it's 2009 the mastering would be "Loud" and void of dynamic range. this is not the case. in terms of loudness it's equal to 1999's "Suspicious Minds" anthology. (it's actually less loud than the 60's box set). so, the sound quality is superb.
here's the surprise of the set:
disc 2 ends with 10 tracks ("A" and "B" sides of the singles) presented in MONO.
when i saw this in the item description prior to purchasing i thought; "Gimmick". man, was i wrong!
listening to the MONO versions is like being shot back in a time machine. i haven't heard these songs in their original release form since i was a little kid. i really can't explain in words, the difference, but if you used to sit and spin Elvis vinyl before CD's were even invented you will find great pleasure in these tracks. i'm now wanting RCA/BMG/Sony/Whoever to do a MONO Masters box set the way the Beatles did a few years ago.
enjoy!

I think it is very neat that they decided to leave the last ten tracks in Mono, giving the sound that they had right when they went onto the airwave in 1969-1970.
