How many books on Elvis do you have? And if you have many, how many times have you had to explain to friends or relatives that they all are different with a guilty expression on your face?:lol:

I have a lot of Elvis books, and I don't care what anyone thinks either. Especially since some of them [the inconsequential ones] were gifts.
Which ones are inconsequential? I was given one called The First Noel which contained a cd with Elvis singing the song. The book jacket gave the impression that Elvis wrote the book, which is why the giftor bought it for me.
It is a nice book and the artwork is spectacular.

Good question and as soon as I read it I got up and counted them: I have 75! To tell you the truth, I am surprised myself because I didn't know there are so many. Well, that's the result of 32 years of collecting.
And as most of you said, I also don't care what other people say or think. It's not their business and I don't care either, how they spend their money.

I've counted 53 Elvis-related books on the shelves next to me and there are others elsewhere in the house.
I ought to declare that I've got almost as many Beatles books and collections on other artists too but Elvis is definitely winning.
Oh, and I have 2 copies of Elvis by the Presleys so that's kind of cheating.

How Many Books ARE There ?
The "Dishonest Title?-Caveat Emptor" reviewer claims that "several Elvis bibliophiles" state in their "works" that the "true figure" concerning the total number of books published on Elvis is "closer to 1100" rather than the 400 or so covered by Opdyke in his "complete guide."
A search in the catalog of the Library of Congress and in an electronic catalog of 6,000 libraries--OCLC's WorldCat, containing 45 million or so records--reveals no publications by so-called Elvis "bibliophiles" Maria Columbus, Mary Hinds and Nigel Stevens. Nor are there any articles authored by them to be found in several databases which cover upwards of about 15,000 magazines, newspapers, journals, etc. In fact, there is little to be found anywhere about these alleged experts.
On the other hand, besides the present work, author Steven Opdyke has written a definitive book-length study of Willie Nelson and even wrote his M.A. thesis on the subject of rock music. The "Elvis bibliophiles" have no such pedigree to substantiate the reviewer's claims about the existence of their authoritative 1,100-item lists.
Although Columbus has long headed the "Elvis Special Photo Association" and Hinds the "Elvis! On Capitol Hill" fan club, there is thus no evidence that they have compiled and published any lists of book-length works about "The King." On the other hand, Greenwood Press consistently produces high-quality bibliographic studies that are the foundation of many an academic library's subject-specific bibliography collections. The present work is no exception.
And if we can trust the Library of Congress and their catalog, in it they presently list about 400 books on Elvis covered under about 75 subject headings. While there may be other books on Elvis that are not covered in the Opdyke work and that are presently unknown to the Library of Congress, Opdyke's book is, for the time being, "the real thing" and certainly worth the price.

05-21-2009, 10:36 AM
Tony,
Did you ever get a crush on a girl at school, and even though she didn't know that you existed, you still got angry when other kids picked on her?
Maybe you didn't, but hopefully imagining this scenario will go some of the way to helping you to understand my lamentable position.
Where SleepyJack and I come from geographically, "thickness" is colloquially interchangeable with "stupidity", so essentially he was suggesting that Priscilla Presley and her adorable book are intellectually challenged, and that made me vexed and defensive. A bit like Forrest Gump when Jenny is threatened, except even more embarrassing because at least Jenny actually knows Forrest.
Fortunately, in the UK and Ireland, irony is such a popular vehicle of expression that we were able to have this heated exchange without either of us becoming even remotely ashamed or hurt.
So, no harm done, basically.

I understood this as in Canada where I was brought up, thickness means the same. In fact many of your expressions and meanings are still used there....I guess Canadians tend to hang onto their old world roots. :)

I have around 300 Elvis books from coffee table sized to paper backs, plus almost 200 magazine from the 50's onwards
It takes up nearly an entire 6 shelf bookcase - and it's right by the front door.
I never feel guilty about them and I don't let other people make me feel guilty.
I am more selective now than what I used to be - which is funny since there's more books now than the early 80's
One of the books is a 1973 grade school reader - it's a bio of Elvis with watercolours.
I find it very interesting to compare books written in different decades and see how the reporting/thinking about Elvis changes
