Graceland: Historical or Hysterical?

Tuesday March 28, 2006
Graceland (https://www.elvis.com/graceland/), the tacky Tennessee home of rock 'n' roll idol Elvis Presley, is known for cheesy design like green shag carpeting on the ceiling. Now, it seems, the 1939 Colonial Revival style (http://architecture.about.com/od/periodsstyles/ig/House-Styles/colonial-revival-jpg.htm) house has joined the ranks of the White House. Yesterday during a ceremony at the 14-acre estate, Graceland was named a National Historic Landmark.
What makes this house historical? Not the architecture, of course. But in her press statement, his ex-wife Priscilla Presley said that Elvis would be "honored and moved" to know that his beloved home had won such a prestigious designation. I can almost hear Elvis crooning.

the writer probably hasn't seen the house or went along expecting it to be tacky and nothing could change his bigoted mind

One can't be a bigot for calling something tacky!

And come on ... the house is tacky personified in many ways.

The writer is very condescending and not an Elvis fan. I wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't even been to Graceland.

I agree with Getlo here. Today by our standards of housing, Graceland would be considered tacky by some people - especially the shag carpeting on the ceiling in the Jungle Room.

Bear in mind that it wasn't always that way because the Jungle Room wasn't created until 1974 and up until that time it had been just a regular den/porch.

Vernon Presley, himself, even supposedly became horrified when Elvis bought all of that furniture for the den.

Let's just be glad that the writer didn't see Graceland during the red/bordello look period of 1974-1977. :supriced::blink:

at least the red was still the real thing. Wished they had kept it the way he really saw it for the very last time

And it's all a matter of personal taste as well, I guess.

Some of Elvis' decorating skills may leave alot to be desired, but the house itself is not tacky. Stand at the road and look up at the house...now tell me that's tacky.:blink:

This is all just a matter of personal opinion. But, when you think about it, that 'tacky' interior was the 'in' thing during that time! C'mon people! Don't you remember when having shag green carpet was 'out of sight'! LOL!
I do agree that the writer could of at least had more respect for such a historic monument.

IMO I don't care what the writer thinks cos it was Elvis' home and he had every right to decorate it the way he wanted to. I don't think its tacky at all, its a lovely home that was lived in and was filled with fun and laughter and had Elvis' stamp in every room. It wouldn't be Graceland if Elvis had called in an interior designer and let them have free rein on it, they would have turned it into a showhouse, a mansion without a heart.

I have to agree that carpeting on the ceiling and walls does look tacky but all in all, I've always found the Jungle Room cozy looking and I could spend a lot of quiet reading time in a room like that. I would say I dislike the pool room more. It looks a lot more garish to me.

You must remember it was the 70's that was the style I'm sure if elvis was alive he would of changed it, it's like a time warp.

Tacky is a relative term.
Perhaps to some it is tacky to others it may seem cheap looking or even untasteful-but its in the eye of the people who are looking. Others might call it cool and "just like Elvis a little of everything in the mix"
I know it is a much prettier home than I own-so call me tacky I guess:):)

Well you gotta think that if Elvis had lived into the 80's and 90's it woud've been redecorated several times.

so those people that say Elvis house is decorated tacky wouldn't feel that way. those people who say that should also keep in mind Elvis died in 70's when all that was fashionable.

Great post, spanish eyes. :notworthy I totally agree. It was Elvis' home and it was his right to decorate it the way he wanted to. The 70's were also a different time..

Who knows, thirty years from now, maybe our homes will be considered tacky
