Elvis - driven by conflicting internal needs: In her excellent academic book, Elvis Presley: A Bio-Bibliography, Professor Patsy Guy Hammontree made a number of important observations about Elvis and his psychological and personal needs.
rofessor Hammontree drew a picture of a person whose life was more fiction that fact, and who, due to the nature of his internal doubts, upbringing and success, displayed a number of varied psychological indicators ranging from authoritarianism to dependence.
http://www.elvisinfonet.com/image-files/lindathompson2_2006.jpgOn his relationship with Linda Thompson, Professor Hammontree wrote:
Aged twenty-one and ambitious, Thompson enjoyed publicity. She quickly understood that Elvis required a lot of attention and that she could benefit from seeing that he got it. She readily adapted to his controlled environment, accepting him as a law unto himself. Once, speaking to Rocky Barra, publisher of Strictly Elvis, Thompson remarked, “Elvis is a special person. He’s different from other people and he doesn’t have to live by the same rules that other people do.” Like others in Elvis’s inner circle, Thompson excluded Elvis from standard behavioural codes.
In spite of his authoritarianism, Elvis liked to be coddled and treated like a youngster needing protection. Thompson gladly behaved toward him in that way. In an article in McCalls magazine several years after Elvis died, Thompson described the relationship they had, pointing out that they were “lovers, friends, brother, sister, daddy and little girl, mommy and baby.” According to Thompson, Elvis regularly called her “mommy” and she called him “Bunton” or “baby”.
Do you agree with Professor Hammontree?
Comment on Professor Hammontree’s view (nigel@elvisinfonet.com)
The professor might have some valid points, but from what I know for a psychological evaluation to be valid, a face to face interaction with the subject is required along with other established methods of observation, tests, etc. Form the looks of it, the professor's evaluation is all based on write-ups, comments and other distant observations. It can be true to a certain point, but it can never be considered valid and acceptable.

Psychologists adn psychiatrists do more harm than good, and cloud simple issues with their rubbish.

I don't Franny.
For heavens sake, I call people close to me, all sorts of pet names. Comes with the territory of being close.
I agree with Getlo on his comment, too.
Psychologists adn psychiatrists do more harm than good, and cloud simple issues with their rubbish.
Furthermore, it is well known that a lot of psychologists and psychiatrists are in the business as they need the therapy.

Good grief !! Will it ever stop? When will they realize that the man was a human being for God's sake. He sweated like the rest of us and he bled like any of us. Of course he'd have his hang ups and fantasies. Don't we all! I really do get tired of all this analyzing of the man. "OH GOD!! Elvis picked his nose. Let's look into that and write a book about it!!!". I'm surprised they missed the fact that he even had a pet name for his wang. Imagine what they could make out of that!!!!
Let's just accept him for what he was. A **** talented guy who brought happiness to millions with his gift.

Couldn`t agree more...I don`t think most people see exactly how much damage these "professionals" can and have caused to numerous lives all over the world. If you never had a problem in your entire life they would soon find you one..or a hundred of `em!

Not only is it part of being human, but it's also what makes each person "individual", and very often...interesting.(y)
I think if you have never had a need for some type of mental help- if you adjust well to every situation and your life has run pretty well since childhood-it is easy to dismiss people who try to counsel or help through therapy as being con artists or quacks who really just muddle waters more.
I am in a position to say that is not the case IMO.
I have benefited greatly by people who wanted to help, who listened, who made me think deeper than I wanted to.
Every one knows my thoughts on things which shape every person-that are totally beyond their control or domain-as children and later.
I wish I could have reacted exactly as some who seem to have much better adjusted childhoods & upbrining- in my life at certain times. I wish I did not have a brain which does not produce certain hormones which regulate emotional brain activity in proper amounts-and that runs in my fathers side of the family. I did not ask for any of these situations-I had no say.
Until you get medical help and investigation you have no idea why you react as you do-why you cope as you do. Knowledge is the start of change-including therapy for some.
As for Elvis-I do think he had a very complex mental and emotional make-up.
I think he is no different than most of us-he became who he was by a complex combination of heredity, environment as a child and his own mistakes.

I agree for the most part-unfortunatly one persons "interesting" is considered "crazy" by others.;):)
