Here's a challenge to get everyone thinking.
If you could make the set list for Elvis in a certain year, what songs would you include.
Rules.
1. assume the average concert is 18-22 songs (to average about 1 hour)
2. keep in mind the published songs available up to that time (songs from the past at that time are eligible).
3. At least 5 songs not known to be performed by Elvis are to be included.
4 Reasons for your choices.
5. You can make an assumption as if Elvis was in decent health, and lived past 1977, if you wish.
Looking forward to your input
James.

Nice line-up. I like "It Hurts Me" in the line-up. He could mention that Charlie Daniels just recently had a hit with "Devil Went Down To Georgia", but here's a song he wrote for me 15 years ago. I would have love to hear a 70's/80's version of Peace In The Valley with JD Sumner taking Ray Walker's part. I believe Crying would have worked as his "new" single - I have read several reports that Elvis Loved that Song, and that he actually considered it for The Jungleroom sessions.

I think this is a well thought out event. I like the pacing. I've heard Orion's version of Crazy little thing Called Love, and love it, so I can't help but believe Elvis version would be even better. I never thought of Southern Nights, but I'd love to hear Elvis' version. I Can't remember if Glass Houses was released by this time, but after Elvis introduced Billy Joel, I would have love to hear 'It's Still Rock And Roll To Me". I would love to hear the story he preface She Believes In Me with.
Great work!

What I'm finding amazing is that almost everyone has the time, circumstances, and details in mind for their concerts. It's great that the thought is being put into this!
I'm also finding interesting that all the concerts are within the first decade of the timeline of "his passing as we know it". Keep it up everyone - I'm enjoying every minute of this!

The Medley CC Rider / That's alright was done once in 1975 It only featured a couple of lines. The second That's alright from the acoustic set will be closer to the original version - no orchestra or backup singers.

Presley does MTV's Unplugged
The years is 1993/1994, a year or so after Clapton's one, and before/around the time Dylan's one. ¨Elvis is about to be 60 years old, and he appears dressing a brown fringed leather jacket, similar to the one he used around '72-'74 (pic below), or a non fringed leather brown coat like the one he used in '69. Either a dark green or a black silk shirt, similar to the ones he used around '68 (pics below), plus a scarf around his neck like the ones he used on street clothes around '69. He is dressing jeans, dark blue, or black denim, I know, he didn't liked them, but these are the 90's, and their are no longer to be considered working class, but total the other way, their are custom made for him, bell bottom and metal stars included, resembling the aloha suit (or check out the pants on the statue picture below). His haircut and sideburns are late '69, longish but no dye, his natural color plus showing a lot of grey, he is as slim as in the '68 special, how you like that? he's old but that doesn't takes anything away to him (drugs did), he hasn't lost his voice strength at all but now has a rough edge because of aging, but that does sounds good. He promises to look forever wild, forever young. Willie Nelson like but with a cool dressing taste for christ sake!
Presley has been retired since 1981, he got clean after the near fatal Aug '77, and had a great career closing with a world tour before getting married again and enjoy a decade of traveling and well deserved rest. Now he is coming back.
This is a TV special:
It opens with Elvis jamming with the Band, he is playing and acoustic Martin Guitar with the same leather cover he used back in '56 through all the show. James Burton is there playing lead acoustic, slide, and Dobro, but this is not the TCB Band, these are mostly the guys who played for Elvis in Nasville June 1970, plus a few young blood. The sound is something in between that sound, the '67 Nashville sessions, Johnny Cash American Recordings, and Bob Dylan''s own unplugged.
"I Didn't Make It on Playing Guitar" (informal Jam) James Burton on Dobro
(Elvis greets the audience and states: some people don't know, but this is not my first unplugged Tv Special, and he sneers.

OOPS Sorry!
Well - the show has been rescheduled and took place at Madison Square Garden October 1978. The event was filmed for a video 'Elvis in New York'.
Elvis took a year off before hand after yet another weak tour (August 1977) and Vegas was cancelled. During this period (September 1977 - October 1978), Elvis checked himself into a detox centre, lost some weight (similarly to the fall of 1976), recorded a new double A side single (Rainy Night in Georgia b/w Feelings).
His hair is now shorter and sideburns less bulky. Stagewear was similar to the 1969 press conference suit. He starts the show in a black outfit with matching black / red scarf. He changes to a full white with blue scarf for the final numbers. As the show comes to a close with Can't help falling in love a avalanche of confetti falls on the stage as the huge screen at the back of the stage runs a slideshow of a collage of fotos from his carrear.
By the way, this video "Elvis in New York" was scheduled for a dvd release including the show (80 minutes), the preceeding press conference (20 minutes), the video clips of the double A side, + an interview recorded at a recording studio, where EP talks about his carrear and plays some bits of his faves on the piano.

My friend, that was my dream show. I know that some songs were never gonna happen, so wishful thinking on my part yes.
However, regarding 'improbable song choices' - who could have guessed Elvis doing 'Trouble' in 1973, 'Down in the Alley' and 'Big Boss Man' in 1974 or even 'Little Egypt' from the 68 Special, 'Little Darlin' in 1975 , or record in the studio 'Pledging my love' and 'He'll have to go' 15 years after being originally released??? If EP was motivated or 'in the mood' he could do lots of songs.
Also, I always thought that good songs from the 60's were not given their good share live, as is the case of movie songs (with the exception of a couple from Blue Hawaii)
Many singers today with a 20 + year career do more than just their greatest hits live. Many include the odd couple of songs from the most dusted archives. If you see Elton John's dvd celebrating his 60 years, more than half the setlist comprised of obscure tracks. A motivated and healthy Elvis would have dug deep into his repertoire to come up with a freshened setlist (just like he did in 1970 - as per TTWII rehearsing tons of songs and again in August 1974)

Ok here's another one.
The date is March-April 1970. After the Houston Astrodome shows, Elvis doesn't want to wait to go to Vegas to perform live again, so he goes on tour right away. Aware that this would not be vegas, but a more rock oriented tour, Elvis, as he did in Houston, leaves the big orchestra behind, and goes just with the TCB Band and The Sweets, plus, to make up for the lack of the orchestra, he binged a small 3 horn section, that gave a soul feel to the show.
He relied mostly in his Aug '69 and Feb '70 live repertory, favoring an uptempo raw show, rather than a big ballads vegas like show. The sound and feel of the music would be something in between the '69 sound and the '70 sound. This is how the set list went.
NO INTRO, the band just kicked in with the opening guitar lick of See See Rider (ON STAGE album like)
1. See See Rider Elvis on his acoustic guitar
2. Mystery Train/Tiger Man Elvis on his acoustic guitar
3. Elvis leaves the guitar
4. My Babe
5. Well Well routine I Got Woman James Burton replicates in his own style the original Scotty Moore solo
6. Baby What You Want me To Do Elvis goes for the electric guitar but does not sit on a stool, he leave it back after these song. These time the song will have two solos, one by James, the other by Elvis just doing his '68 comback version thing
7. Johnny B. Good.
8. Proud Mary James does the guitar solo for this song
9. Delta Lady (Elvis rehearsed this song for his Feb '70 Vegas season
10. Polk Salad Annie
11. Any Day Now
Elvis sits on his stool with the electric guitar again
12. Are you Lonesome Tonight
13. Runaway
14. Funny How Times Slip Away
Elvis introduces the members of his band
15. Reconsider Baby
Elvis leaves the guitar and stand up again
16. Walk a Mile in My Shoes/In the Ghetto ]
17. Suspicious Minds
18. Blue Suede Shoes
19. All Shook Up
18. What' I Say Very long solo by James Burton (elvis at the international ftd like), while that, Elvis will melt with the audience, kisses girls etc, then came back, and no outro, just thank you very much, vow in 3 different spots on the stage, and walks away.
