The Story
Elvismania is at its peak in 1957 when Presley comes to Canada for his only performances outside the United States. CBC Radio reporter Bill Beatty is all shook up by what he witnesses in Toronto: wild-eyed teenaged girls "screaming, sighing and pounding their feet." Unfazed, "Elvis The Pelvis" gyrates in Ottawa the next night.
Did you know?
• On April 3, 1957, only 37 of the 259 MPs showed up for the night session in the House of Commons in Ottawa. The rest went to see Elvis Presley perform.
• An Ottawa-area convent suspended eight students for attending the show of the "depraved, sex-crazed, devil incarnate."
Also on April 2:
• 1871: Canada's first national census puts the country's population at 3,689,257.
