DO YOU THINK ELVIS ENJOYED SINGING HIS 50s HITS IN THE 1970s? OR DO YOU THINK HE SANG THEM BECAUSE HE KNEW HOW MUCH THE FANS LOVED THEM. I KNOW HE LIKED TO SING 'TRYING TO GET TO YOU" AND "I GOT A WOMAN". I THINK IN THE 70s ELVIS LIKED TO INCLUDE THE 50s HITS IN HIS SET LISTS BUT HE HAD MANY CURRENT SONGS THAT HE WANTED TO SING ALSO. SONGS LIKE "HURT" AND "BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER" WHICH SHOWED HIS AMAZING VOCAL RANGE.

ANY THOUGHTS

IMO he sang them to keep the fans happy. Anytime he changed the setlist to something different, the fans did not like it.

I think also he wanted to look "modern" is the word? I mean, 50s songs were big and guess he liked them very much. Elvis knew too that music business was changing, so he tried to arrange his songs to the new "rhythms".

I personally believe that he only sang those songs because the fans liked them.

Maybe it was a little of both. :hmm:

I think he enjoyed some while disliking others

he disliked Hound dog, Don't be cruel, Teddy Bear, All shook up, jailhouse Rock and Blue Suede shoes.

you can tell by the way he performs them as he just rushes through them to please the fans.

on the other hand he seemed to enjoy performing:

Heartbreak hotel, Trying to get to you, My Baby left me, Big hunk o' love, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, That's all right

Its like anything in life no matter what you do, if you do it over and over-its harder to find excitement in it.

For once we agree. I think these were about the only songs Elvis cared to sing anymore and the rest were just to please the crowds.

I think i got bored with "Hound Dog," but I think he still had enthusiasm with songs like "Heartbreak Hotel," "Trying TO Get To You," "A Big Hunk O' Love," "One Night" etc.

He always seemed to have a good time with "A big hunk O` love" and "Lawdy Miss Clawdy"....many of the others were crowd-pleasers.... there are times, especially with the "Teddy Bear/Don`t be cruel" medley that you just know in his heart he was tired of it.

I've never seen other performers rush through their songs the way Elvis did

most of the time I've seen them perform the song fairly seriously or have the crowd do a sing a long with them but never a quick 20 second mumble with a fast tempo arrangement and lets get this over with type feeling that Elvis gave when performing his old hits.

I am surprised more performers don't act bored with their old hits and rush through them like Elvis did.If I was a singer who had a big hit record and then every performance for the next 20 years or so I would have to sing that song I'd be bored out of my mind.

Have you ever played in a band? I can tell you from experience there were songs we did-which we hated. "House of the Rising Sun" was one of the first songs we learned-after a couple years of it-you drop it but people request it and you are stuck. Same with "Proud Mary", "Mustang Sally" or "Get Back" when we got requests for them we held our nose not because they were bad songs but because they bored the He77 out of us. My brothers band today feels the same way about Garth Brooks songs like "Friend in Low Places" they do not always get first class treatment.

No, I haven't been in a band, I was just saying that I've never seen a performer rush through their hits the way Elvis did.

I had a friend who saw Tom Jones in Vegas over 10 years ago and he told me that Tom rushed through his old hits and seemed bored with them like Elvis but I didn't see the show.

I did see Tom Jones in a t.v. special a long time ago and he treated all his old hits with respect and his singing was very good. It wasn't like Elvis on Aloha where he rushes through Blue Suede shoes and Hound dog.

I'm sure that Elvis didn't feel uncomfortable singing the songs that made him famous in the first place in the 70's.It was what the audience wanted to hear because most of them grow up with that kind of music. When times change,so does the music.Elvis changed as well like everyone else but I don't think he was embarrassed by singing those songs in concert.

We all have differing thresholds for boredom and excitement-which is why we are unique individuals and not robots or clones.
Elvis could have just refused to do the songs, then some would have said he was not responsive to what the people wanted. Perhaps he just did the best he could in the situation-but the boredom was hard to hide.
I have a Tom Jones video from the "House of Blues" and he still did "Delilah" and "Whats New PussyCat" they were fine-but his heart was in the songs he had on the new Album at the time _"The Lead and how to Swing it" which is a great album. IMO

PRECISELY!!! (y)

If Elvis had dropped the 50's songs, then the press and fans would have certainly commented on it and I am sure that would have made Elvis feel like he wasn't giving his best to his fans.

The classic example of this has always been the ill-fated song lineup for the opening show in Las Vegas on August 19, 1974. In an attempt to freshen up his concert and make it more contemporary, he dropped most of his usual material and concentrated on more current material. Of course as we all know, the concert was met with less than enthusiastic results from the audience and Elvis went back to his tried and true concert lineup the very next night. CLEARLY Elvis could have just stuck with the new song lineup regardless of the fan response, but Elvis always knew that the fans were the reason he was Elvis Presley and he was going to do whatever he had to in order to please his fans....thus the reason why his 50's hits remained a part of his concerts, even if he was less than thrilled to perform them night after night. :hmm:

TCB!

Like I said earlier if I were Elvis I'd be bored to with performing the same songs night after night so to get around it I would change the setlists up

Elvis had hits in the 50's and early 60's that he never performed live like
return to sender, his latest flame, Devil in Disguise

he could've have performed those songs instead of Hound dog, Don't be cruel, Teddy Bear and Jailhouse Rock. So those songs wouldn't be in his set list every night and he could take a break from performing them

He also never performed some 50's songs that would've been nice to hear in the 70's like Good Rockin tonight and Too much.

of course this never happened but their was a solution to Elvis repetitive setlist and boredom to bad he never changed it. From 1973 to 1977 it was mostly the same 5 or 6 songs he opened with in his setlist but it didn't have to be that way as he had a huge catalouge of songs. A real shame as most of the fans would still come to the concerts no matter what songs he played.

What you saw Elvis do was rushing through a medley of his old songs simply to please the crowds. He never rushed through any of the other songs.

If the fans had been more understanding he would have been able to sing a lot of new songs that he really could have put his heart into but they kept asking for what he called "bubble gum songs" that he had long ago outgrown.

That is so true Diane. Yet, when I look back at the concerts it was the really "big" numbers that brought the house down. Songs like "American Trilogy" or "How Great Thou Art" or "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".....people LOVED those.:notworthy:king::king:

The reason he kept singing "Hound Dog" till the end was to please the fans and the fact that it was his signature song.

If I heard one of Rosanne's stories correctly, fans still still went crazy when he sang "Hound Dog" in the late 70's.
