View Full Version : 'If I Can Dream" at inauguration

".......There is only one Elvis, and you don't have to do much to keep him front and center," said Sillerman, who said President-elect Barack Obama's inaugural committee has contacted CKX to ask about using the Elvis song "If I Can Dream" as part of an inaugural event. "I am a big supporter of President Obama. If they want to use it, we absolutely will make it available to them. Forty years after Elvis' '68 special, we see that he's being thought of as part of a new beginning......"

There must be lights burning brighter somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue
If I can dream of a better land
Where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true
There must be peace and understanding sometime
Strong winds of promise that will blow away
All the doubt and fear
If I can dream of a warmer sun
Where hope keeps shining on everyone
Tell me why, oh why, oh why wont that sun appear
Were lost in a cloud
With too much rain
Were trapped in a world
That's troubled with pain
But as long as a man
Has the strength to dream
He can redeem his soul and fly
Deep in my heart there's a trembling question
Still I am sure that the answer gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle
And while I can think, while I can talk
While I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, please let my dream
Come true, right now
Let it come true right now
Oh yeah

And who says The King is dead and forgotten about? Elvis would have never imagined his good fortunes this long after his death.

It's nice to know that the symbolism of 'If I can Dream' still resonates so many decades after it's original release. What makes this so potent a symbol is that Barack Obama is the first black President and that his campaigners and Obama himself have chosen this song to represent their vision/struggle and opportunities.
What I also like about this choice (if true) is that racial divides are broken down. It has been suggested in the past that Elvis was racist, this goes some way to acknowledging that this just isn't the case.

I just read that Arthea Franklin (go girl!!) was the musical guest. I wonder if she will sing this song? Otherwise, we'll hear Elvis' song via the The United States Marine Band and The San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

I hope you read wrong and that we will hear Elvis singing If I Can Dream. It's not an exclusively Elvis song so if someone else sings it or it's done by a band, why would Obama need Sillerman's permission to do it?

EPE probably owns the rights to the lyrics, would be my guess. Maybe someone else can better answer that.

Oh wow! Kinda Ironic...when I performed with Kellie Pickler on Capital Hill It was great honor to represent Elvis and his music. I had great honor sing that song on Capital hill. I'm in tears that we will get to hear If I Can Dream from the man! On that historical day.

My personal opinion is that Elvis himself wouldn't make public comments on political issues and kept his voting preferences to himself. I always wince when I see one side or the other manipulating Elvis' image or legacy to make him support their political position.
But when one of your postings mentioned Aretha Franklin, I had the crazy thought of how unique and special yet another duet of this song would be - Elvis and Aretha. Very powerful and symbolic.

Perhaps they will just use the existing footage from the special on big screen-or perhaps just the recording will somehow be incorporated into the event. A guess.

Great song but I`m not fond of Obama and his "I`ll give you a 3 letter word--J-O-B-S" VP choice. I have to admit, the thought of this song being used slightly disgusts me. I heard that one of the Inaugural Balls will be decorated in purple lush carpeting. Sounds more like something out of a 1970s pimp/disco movie than a Presidential event.
BTW, if you haven`t heard....Lisa Marie will be attending.

Well its a song of hope-and I'm sure most Americans are hoping that Americas problems in the new year with a new President will get better and not worse. So regardless of who is president-we should all continue to hope for better times. This song fits the bill.

I`ve always loved the song. I have no issue with the song itself. I hope for our country`s sake, that Obama does a good job. I have doubts and I think he`s a snake in the grass but, I will pray for him as I have done with past presidents.

Thats for sure-he is in the toughest position since WW2 of any president coming into office-an almost unprecedented economic meltdown in the last year, and a war on 2 fronts. He will need everyones prayers and willingness to work for solutions to massive problems. "If I Can Dream" is the perfect song for nearly impossible times.

If I Can Dream is a song that fits so well in the wishes of peace... not only for USA but for the whole world. (y)
:hmm:I remember back several years ago they played John Lennons "Imagine" prior to the opening of a United Nations Councils' meet. I always thought they should of played Elvis' "If I can Dream" too. My guess though that to use Elvis at Obamas inaugural will be seen by the entire earth at once which would be far more than anyone heard at that UN event anyway. When people want to be noticed they always reach for Elvis Presley !!!!!(y)

I did not hear it at the actual inauguration-perhaps it is to be used at one of the Inaugural Balls tonight in some way.
There was also a 2 hour event over the weekend at the Lincoln Memorial and many artists performed-but did not see the whole event so I am not sure if it was used.

It wasn't a hoax. Robert FX Sillerman was quoted as saying that Obama's people requested to use it but something must have blocked it, say, the record company since they own the rights to the song. Maybe Obama's people thought that EPE owned the rights and went to them instead of the actual owner and that might have upset RCA to where they said no or either requested a hefty fee from the White House to use it.
Then again, maybe it was used at one of the 10 balls thrown or in the 100-piece parade. Just because we didn't hear it doesn't mean it wasn't used in some way.

Well surely Sillerman and his people knew who had the rights to the song-it was used on American Idol with the Celine Dion that was not a problem? Surely the Obama people would have got info from Sillerman or his people on how and where to proceed to get the song.

Elvis was a smart man and wise entertainer. He never revealed his political opinions to the public--never let the public know which side of the fence he was on-- and it`s unfair to do so now that he`s gone and can not speak for himself.

I see it a little differently.
Isn't it universal to want hope, peace,-understanding? We all want those things regardless of party -Republican, Democrat, Independent etc.....we Americans want hope for peace and understanding. (although its a long hard road to hoe)
I don't think allowing a song of hope to be used in conjunction with the inaugural of "any president" is actually making a political statement of philosophy.
When Bush took office I wished nothing but the best for him, and if he had wanted to use this song in any way it would have been fine by me. I think we should hope any president does well, regardless of party. (why would anyone not wish a new president success-when they fail we suffer)
