I was just listening to a recording from the February 23, 1972 closing show and during the introductions for this show, Elvis introduced "Priscilla, my wife". Just prior to this show, it has been widely reported that Priscilla was summoned to Elvis' room where she told him that she wanted a divorce and in response, Elvis forcefully made love to her.
Although the is show devoid of any of his usual monologues or chatter and the songs are all rushed through, he is in strong voice and sings his full set-list. Further, Elvis doesn't sound like a man that has just been rejected by his wife.

A lot of things have been said about Elvis, Priscilla is the only person IMHO who can know the answer the rape claim. Sometimes I think Priscilla has said things to hurt Elvis' Image because she was resentful of how people perceived Elvis, she just wanted people to see the man behind the mask so to speak.
Over the years the need to discredit Elvis have lessoned by Priscilla, I guess people have all the facts and will come to their own conclusions about Elvis' life.
As for Elvis giving a great show, that was his bread and butter. Could also go to show that the accusations might not be true :hmm:

I thought about this inaccuracy in the Presley history, but before the avalanche of the literary tomes after his death and the re-creation of his history, the entire mess was mentioned in "Elvis What Happened" and the story has been the same in each book......that they met in between shows, she told him about leaving him and he forcefully made love to her. It was mentioned in that first book before any attempts were made at changing some of the facts or trying to cover some less than scrupulous ones.

HEY BABY, I AIN'T ASKIN' MUCH OF YOU - Las Vegas, Feb. 23, 1972 MS by Evan
Las Vegas - February 23, 1972 midnight show.
Priscilla Presley wrote in her book ELVIS & ME that between the dinner show and the midnight show on February 23 (the closing night of Elvis' sixth Vegas season) she finally confirmed with Elvis that she was ending their marriage. Anyone who has been in this position could sympathize with both parties and their emotional reactions to such a change in their lifestyles. For me I've always wondered how Elvis was after Priscilla made this announcement to him. Luckily, I have been able to listen to a part of that very night via an audience recording of the midnight show that night. This recording begins with the 2001 filled with many screams of excitement, which climax with Elvis' entrance to the stage. The sound is very typical for an audience recording, however the clapping from the Sweet Inspirations is very evident suring the opening riff. SEE SEE RIDER is very similar to the opening night performance, and Elvis repeats the line ".well I'm going, aarrrr way baby" just as he does in his evening performance from Hampton Roads, April 9, 1972 (refer ELVIS ON TOUR), instead of singing "I'm goin', goin' goin' away baby". Elvis certainly does not sound like he has just had his wife tell him their marriage is over.
The girls in the audience are wild tonight. Elvis says thank you, and signals the start of PROUD MARY. J.D. Sumner's voice booms "roll on, roll on" through the International's showroom. One fan can be clearly heard saying "Oh my God" as Elvis does his thing to Ronnie's drum roll. She's hot for Elvis tonight!
Hardly before the applause starts Elvis starts a haunting version of NEVER BEEN TO SPAIN. One guy is heard saying "Oh yeah!" in approval to Elvis' choice. The sound on the tape improves a little allowing the listener to hear a slight echo in Elvis' voice during the first two verses of this song. Elvis' pronunciation of the lyrics, "well they tell me I was born there" is very different to the usual. There is more power and is used to good effect. What I dig about these January/February 1972 versions is Elvis' overall clear pronunciation of the words in this song, where as by April, he was less careful in the way he sang them. James Burton's guitar lets out some awesome riffs in the finale of Never Been To Spain. I love this song, and feel that it really suited Elvis. A woman sitting near the tape recorder this night says to her friend, "He (Elvis) has a bracelet on!" Perhaps it was Priscilla's? Little time is allowed for applause when YOU GAVE ME A MOUNTAIN is performed. This version is still sung at a similar speed as the first versions, but Elvis seems more confident in his approach allowing his vocals soar. Unlike in some later versions (i.e., September 2, 1974 closing show) Elvis does not emphasize the lyrics that include ".just tired of being my wife, she took my one ray of sunshine" but before, he does sing "so tired of THE workin' for nothin'" which is a little unusual. There is a lot of conviction in Elvis' performance of You Gave Me a Mountain tonight, and the audience's reaction proves they felt his emotion in his singing.
UNTIL IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO GO starts immediately. There is a little movement in the tape recorder, but does not hinder the sound too much. One advantage that audience recordings provide which soundboards do not is the overall effect of the crowd reaction to Elvis. Often we lose sight (or hearing) of the fact that Elvis and his audience would mould into one microcosm when they were together, and even on RCA/BMG recordings much of this participation is lost.
Until It's Time.. is a very straight version with no hiccups. For me it's not a great song. However it was a recent single at this time, and so Elvis was obviously promoting it whilst also enjoying it.
Elvis allows the applause to last for a normal amount of time before Jerry Scheff starts POLK SALAD ANNIE. The girl who was quite audible in Never Been to Spain screams her excitement as Elvis starts his singing. Jerry's bass solo starts a little earlier than usual, but is real dirty version. Elvis is into this, and he seems more comfortable with this arrangement than the last few this song had already experienced. The finale brings the audience to near ecstasy LOVE ME starts immediately. There is the crash of glass, and some of the fans roar with laughter. I am uncertain if Elvis was aware of what was happening, but it does not appear to be a dangerous situation. In fact, Elvis as probably in the middle of it. During the lyrics, "I'd be sad and blue" there is somewhat of a commotion. Elvis chuckles and says, "Easy job, man".
After a slight edit, ALL SHOOK UP kicks in at super sonic speed. The clapping by the quartets is very evident, and Elvis has fun with the lyrics as he over pronunciates "she touched my hand and WHAT a chill I got". A great performance clocking in at just 0.59 seconds.
The TEDDY BEAR-DON'T BE CRUEL medley is next, and brings many screams. Perhaps Elvis is throwing teddy bears and hound dogs into the crowd. As Elvis repeats the chorus, he sings "I just wanna be" then in a slightly lower tone he repeats, "Just wanna be". The "bop de wops" by the Stamps are very prominent in Teddy Bear. The start of Don't Be Cruel has girls in hysterics. This version includes the "kick your ***" lyrics and Elvis puts much emphasis on "I don't want no other love". The fans go ape shit at the end of this performance. Elvis's voice emerges from the screams with a slow, bluesy "Youuuuuuu aiiiiiinnnnnttttttt nuthin' buttttttta hound dawg". HOUND DOG has this particular girl getting very excited, and Elvis plays up to her before building up to full speed. After just one verse during the fast section of the song, the band tries to end because of the break Elvis puts in the words "You aint never caught a rabbit (pause) and you aint no friend of mine" however Elvis continues singing for another verse, and the band quickly follows. However when he does sing his intended pause (which is a bit of an oxy***** on my part), the fans scream indicating Elvis is physically making it very clear that the song will now finish.
A BIG HUNK OF LOVE is a ball ripper of a version. Elvis screams the lyrics to great effect - much better than the version from the opening night of this season. The band is cooking with gas during this song. Elvis hypes James Burton's solo with some initial hiccups. Tonight's version is as fast as Hardheaded Woman - real fast.
Without warning HELP ME MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT is sung. It is very similar to the studio cut, but seems to have a little more horn orchestration. Luckily for tonight's fans', Elvis sings a full version which almost clocks in at two minutes.
BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER has it's piano introduction slightly edited, but this chick I mentioned before starts hollering like she is on heat, or duck hunting season just started! It's peculiar, and I can't help imagine the funny looks Elvis must have given the Stamps when he heard her! Elvis actually laughs, then a male fan screams out to her "Quiet!". Elvis replies, "Yeah, we're trying to do this song please be quiet back there" which causes the audience to applaud. This "hooting" fan must have felt like an absolute dick after Elvis told her to shut up. "Bridge." is a mesmerizing version. Jerry's bass notes can be heard floating around the showroom, and there is a beautiful flute also to be heard in places. I tend to rank the April 14, 1972 Greensboro versions of this song as one of the best ever - a ten out of ten, and thus tend to compare other versions to this one. Tonight's version is about a nine out of ten compared to Greensboro.
SUSPICIOUS MINDS starts but is suspiciously edited soon after it's start. This is approximately thirty minutes into the show indicating that the fan recording the concert was using a sixty minute tape, and took about three minutes to realize that side A had run out before starting the recording again on side B. Therefore we only get about one minute of Suspicious Minds. Judging by the screams and Ronnie's drumming, Elvis was showing of his karate interest again!
The band introductions proceed without any announcement from Elvis that he wants to introduce the TCB band. After the band introductions, Elvis introduces an actor whose name I can not understand. Elvis continues, "I'd like to say that everybody up here on stage have been, urr, very professional. And have made this one of the happiest engagements I've had here in Vegas (applause). And my Dad, he's here with me, Grandma. And Colonel Parker. And er, Priscilla, my wife. Everybody whose come to see the show, I'd like to thank you very much. I'd just like to mention those FAT funky angels up there on the wall. The tape becomes inaudible, but some guy screams out "They're all yours baby".
Elvis continues another introduction. It is very difficult to understand what he says, but it sounds like he says, "Yeah, the Rambos" He continues, "Yeah, they're fantastic. A gospel group, Would you stand up please? The Rambos".
Once the applause dies down AMERICAN TRILOGY starts. The Stamps' section of the song receives much response from the fans, and Elvis follows with a very vocally outstanding version. Like in You Gave Me a Mountain, Elvis' confidence compared with earlier performances of this song has grown. He allows himself no boundaries, and lets loose on the high notes. The flute solo can be heard bouncing off the walls of the show room Man it must have been great to be there! There is a very strange edit just after the flute solo causing the sound to become much clearer. Unfortunately I do not know if this is from the same show as the sound is much different. Perhaps the concert was not recorded in it's entirety and hence this possible splice from another performance. The standard CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE follows, and is a very typical performance.
Considering the significance of this concert at this time in Elvis' life, his performance runs at just fifty minutes. He is very professional, but maturely entices his fans with his cheeky humor. The show does seem a little rushed, and is closed soon after the introductions, however I get the feeling Elvis is more anxious to finish this long Vegas season because he wants a break rather than rush to a reconciliation with his wife.

I don't see any reason why this needs to turn ugly as long as we don't dwell unnecessarily on the 'R' word.
Elizabeth's thread has raised the much more interesting issue about whether the information in our collected sources on the timing of this event can be accurate, given the recording of the concert in question. It's not just about an alleged assault- it's about the divorce request.

What we saw was a Cirque du Soleil production and there was this cage-like prop and when I saw, the show immediately came to mind. But the Zumanity show was an 'adult's only' show and it had nothing to do with caged up animals at the zoo. I remember seeing Priscilla on t.v. in the 80's and even 90's where she would sometimes put Elvis down or take digs and I thought how stupid she was for doing that because she makes her money off of his image and estate and I know her book and movie damaged Elvis reputation with some fans and turned them off of him completely which means less fans = less money for Priscilla.
that's business 101.
nowadays she speaks kinder of Elvis but if she had done that in the 80's she would have more fans among Elvis fans.

That has always been my "thing" about her Diane. I wouldn't like Priscilla regardless of whom she was married to, or if she was living down the street. I think she has a cold, icy demeanor...the total opposite of Linda Thompson. That's one reason I think why most fans really like Linda...she seemed warm and inviting.:D

I remember seeing Priscilla on t.v. in the 80's and even 90's where she would sometimes put Elvis down or take digs and I thought how stupid she was for doing that because she makes her money off of his image and estate.
I'm relieved to know someone else has noticed too. You can't never publicly say how bad is the 'product' you are trying to sell. She has not been able to separate her private life and resentment towards him from the position she chose at EPE. That's not a very smart movement for her business and her own image on her part considering she lives from Elvis' fans and the great majority would defend Elvis above her.
Diane

Those interviews and her book is precisely what turned me off her. I don't care if the digs are subtle or veiled....they are there regardless and in very poor taste when you make your living off the person you're putting down. In my mind a true lady is one who is honest and has a sense of humor two qualities which she has never had.

No Jen, you know I haven't. I go by what we've all seen, read and heard like everyone else. People strike everyone different and that is how she strikes me. Even if I had met her briefly and she was nice say to me, she would have her public face on and that wouldn't be any indication of who she was.
I've read on some thread quite a while back here on this site that if you want to see the real her, ask her a question about Elvis and you will see a whole different person that her resentment of him shows through. She has the limelight and everything else now because of his death so I feel she should be grateful and graceful towards him.

I was just wondering cause teddy and franny have and not sure if anybody else on here has met her:hmm:

I can't help feeling that this is one of those chinese whispers situations. It has become 'received wisdom' but the sources are never forthcoming. I haven't discovered any material which reveals Priscilla 'putting Elvis down' in all my years of scrutinizing Cilla-related matters.
Sure, we have embittered ex-associates claiming that she was the personification of evil when behind-closed-doors but what does that really demonstrate other than their bitterness?

Teddy and Franny have the right to see Priscilla in a positive light as much as I have the right to the opposite. Some people have also met Lisa and don't think well of her still, but I think the majority were surprised and liked her very much. It's all subjective as to how you perceive someone.
I also saw Lisa in an interview where she said her mother is starting to get a sense of humor and can be quite funny at times which indicates that she didn't used to have one, and I think that's a good thing. She may be less self-conscious and more relaxed now that she has gotten older.

Wow Jen, you snatched my post before I was able to finish editing it to add another sentence. Sometimes you have to be really quick on here.:D
I agree, my feelings towards Lisa are totally different. She kicks off the maternal instinct in me I guess. I never got over that sad little face in the newspapers when Elvis died and her reactions today when someone brings up that awful day does the same to me. I just want to reach out and hug her. Priscilla has never looked or acted devastated like Lisa does for someone who claimed to have loved him.
Just as an example how differently people perceive Priscilla: in an interview she usually plays with her hair, rubs her nose (Lisa caught that habit from her) and says "oh my gosh" etc. etc.....now some will view that as oh so cute and girl-like while others will see it as very immature and cagey.
We all have to go by our instincts......

we have to agree and disgree about the priscilla part. Lisa will always be her daddy's little girl and feel the pain of not having him around. I think once you had elvis love it was there forever. you know some kids don't love there dad as much as they can, but lisa didn't hold back and showed it 100% and still does with the little says she say about him.

Ironically enough, on the day I met Priscilla, I met a lot of the kind of fans who turn up for any Presley-related personal appearance on the calendar, so several of them had met Lisa.
Almost everyone who had met Lisa described her as surly, churlish and resentful and one of them even claimed that Lisa had told them to "**** off" for taking up too much time.

I can imagine Lisa telling some fans off in her usual unladylike way. Does anyone realize how much fans took away her dad from her when she was growing up? Don't you think you might have some resentment towards them too in her place? I think that would be quite normal in light of how her life was growing up.
Others who have met her found her to be very affectionate and friendly. Probably those are more recent after Lisa matured a little more and was able to handle things differently than she had in the past.

Not at all. I've just assumed that the potentially misleading use of words on this subject in Elvis and Me is evidence of her co-writer's contribution, since they are appointed by the publisher to help the celebrity make it more salable as well as salient.
For Cilla to make a confession of this kind afterwards would be absolutely extraordinary and completely unlikely.

Jen, that was my first thought when I read that the 'forcefully story' was not true. A bit of 'creative license' by the author, possibly. Do we know which "story" is at issue here.....is it the one that appears in the book or in the movie, because if you ask me, they are not the same.
But that still doesn't explain why that same story appears in EWH almost 10 years before Priscilla wrote her book.

Being nervous during a television interview is a natural reaction to an unnatural situation, not an indication of guilt. Especially when you know full well that thousands of Presley-fundamentalists are scrutinizing your every move for what might be considered inappropriate behavior.

I'll probably attract a lot hate responses to this, but EWH, although was not a very attractive portrait of The King, was actually factual. The anecdotes that were written in that book had not been written and re-written by the hundreds of authors that would follow after Elvis' death. Even in their 'rough' form, they are un-diluted and at their purest. Priscilla was accompanied by Pat and Judy West the evening of February 23, 1972, in whom she confided about her incident with Elvis. How in the world would Lamar and Marty know what Priscilla did with Elvis -- unless they were in the room (hardly) or listening at the door (possibly?)?? They are such buffoons!!!!

It's always been well known that writers who write the biographies for others do exaggerate and distort what they are told. If Priscilla and the MM were upset at the printing of their books, could they not have written a retraction and outlined what they felt was wrong..or go public in an interview and do it there?

certainly
I said they were t.v. interviews
As recent as 2002 Priscilla's interview with Katie Couric
she was talking about her divorce from Elvis and the straw that broke the camels back and she said oh ''If Elvis wasn't happy nobody was happy''
I took that as a little dig at Elvis because of the tone and the way she worded it. Then in the interview they went on to talk about what a success she's been after she left Elvis and how independent she is like her role in Dallas and her involvement in the estate.
first off this made me laugh she wouldn't of got the role on Dallas if it wasn't for Elvis and there was other executors that were involved in the estate.
even in the ladies home journal interview in 1973 she talks about Mike Stone and she says that Mike Stone is a real man who treats her like a woman.
I took that as a dig at Elvis as well
there are several others
this is from Priscilla's own mouth not ex- associates

I've heard people say this time and time again but the answer is no way.
Once a book is signed, sealed and published it is tantamount to a legally binding document, and in this instance it's one with her name on the front of it in the public domain.
She may very well regret the impression that it gives now but to begin retracting elements of it later is not something you would want to get involved with casually. Especially not in an interview and especially when its incontrovertible anyway.

I'm certainly no Priscilla fan, I believe firmly that Priscilla has resented Elvis for many reasons e.g.
Not being the Husband and father she envisaged due to his commitments and lifestyle.
Having so much attention from the female population :P
For having a carefully constructed Image that the fans simply didn't want to see behind.
As for wanting to see where Priscilla has spoken about Elvis in a non too positive way, just watch 'Elvis by the Presley's. If you can't see through her thinly veiled platitudes you never will.
I have to say (through gritted teeth) Priscilla has gotten better over the years, perhaps the stretching of her skin has tightened her brain matter

Just to add to your comment, you can't libel a dead person, So Priscilla can say pretty much anything she wants. If she says it happened behind closed doors no-one can ever contest it. Her word against a dead man. She would however have to be fairly confident with dates etc because their are people who would have kept diaries.....

too bad I can't find the source, but during one interview she admitted that the rape suggestion (in the book it was never called raped, but more like 'making love without the love') was made more dramatic. This was because of the publicist who wanted some 'tasty' stuff in the book.

the rape belongs to the trashcan. If I was her I would never ever have allowed it in the film the way it was presented. She had to think about Lisa in god's name.....
Even if it did happen (which i seriously seriously doubt) things like that she shouldn't have brought to the open then. She always is such a private person etc etc and then she brings that out. Surely she could have put the accent on much better times

It was my understanding that her role in the movie was primarily providing the financial backing to get it made. I guess when take an exaggerated situation such as the love scene and put it on screen, it just takes on a life of its own, so to speak.

I am willing to bet the truth falls somewhere between the exaggerated story in her book and nothing happening.......Elvis had a gargantuan capacity of anger when provoked. It is possible that there was something that happened, but probably not like in the book or movie. However, I still refer to EWH and the fact that this tale was published long before Priscilla's and I somehow doubt that the MM made it up.
Diane

I have no trouble believing that Elvis was very angry when he heard that Priscilla was leaving him, he was known to have a short fuse like his mother, but I have to agree with Liz that the truth was probably exaggerated greatly in the book and yes most likely had to do with the writer.

there's a lot of people who read those articles and who watch those interviews and would agree with everything i've said
since you like her so much you choose to ignore it and that's okay
if you were to take the blinders off and read the interview in it's context
I know and all those people have trouble seeing outside of the box about Priscilla too as a result of their unquestioning support for Elvis.
I would never willingly choose to ignore anything. I admit that my opinion is affected by terrifyingly strong feelings for Priscilla but I endeavor to exercise objectivity wherever possible. :)
If anything, I have a slight advantage in the objectivity stakes because I love them both.

that's why a lot of fans don't like her but they don't feel that way toward Elvis other women because his other girlfriends don't do that.
she would have more respect and be more liked if she wouldn't of done that.
Elvis's other girlfriends didn't gestate his child or experience any more than a fraction of the same liability.
The other girlfriends were tourists in Elvis's life by comparison. Priscilla was assimilated into it before she was even old enough to provide an informed opinion on it.
Again, if we were talking about anybody in the world other than Elvis Presley I sincerely doubt if you would feel like this, given the circumstances.

it's the same thing Anita Wood and Linda Thompson are well liked by most fans compared to Priscilla because they don't take these digs at Elvis that priscilla use to.

No real fan would be turned off of elvis cause of priscilla, if anything they take her with a grain of salt and come to think of it there is alot of younger fans coming into elvis world and thats what elvis would of wanted so yes she did wrong in many areas, but 31 years later seems to long to go on about something that can't be changed.

if any fans get turned off of elvis by priscilla than surly the mm must have them running for the hills so either way fans are going to come and go so it pointless runnning around pointing fingers. if any fan reads what priscilla writes than thats there choice to make how they feel. Its not about taking sides or who did the wrong, but its elvis who matters and latey we seem be getting alot of new fans liking elvis and that is brilliant. Regarding the sensationalism in E:WH and the contempt in Albert Goldman's "Elvis", Peter Guralnick gave an interview wherein he spoke of the aforementioned books. His claim was that both books, albeit negatively written, were factual. When doing research for his own book, he found sources and proof that backed up the anecdotes in these books. Mr. Guralnick's great respect for Elvis allowed him to present the facts in a more sensitive manner as not to offend those fans who would eventually read his books.

you know i'll ask Cecil
when i said don't have a ''heart attack'' I meant don't take it so seriously I was only asking if anyone had heard the story about Priscilla and Elvis then when Jen didn't believe it I was joking about how it would hurt Cecil's feelings.
I was only teasing a little bit but sometimes it gets lost in the translation because we are all just typing words.
I personally don't care if Priscilla beat up Elvis but I wanted to see if the story had spread to tcb-world

Don't we have enough unsubstantiated stories circling around about Priscilla without purposely adding insult to injury??????? I think we need to let this one die. And as far as my opinion, if she did beat him, maybe he deserved it? As far as hurting Cecil's feelings, he shouldn't be spreading gossip in the first place!!

Mainly because if this is what Cecil likes to talk about, (who is he, again?) it's disrespectful and gossip mongering. Which, in my opinion, is very low. It is also heresay, unless he was in the bed, too.
If you love someone, if you were friends or family of them, you should keep things to yourself, unless they are flattering.

Cecil's character is not in question, spreading gossip of this nature, notwithstanding, but, in my opinion (for what that's worth???), I don't think you should be spreading 3rd and 4th hand rumors on this board. Having a discussion about an actual event is one thing, discussing hypothetical situations is another, but unless you have substantiated information about these sort of things, please do not spread it here. Try another board if you must, but please not here.

spreading it really wasn't my intention I just wanted to know if anyone here had heard of it. Roseanne asked me where I got it so I told her.
Like I said earlier other people have talked about romurs and speculated about Elvis and Priscilla so it's nothing new besides Priscilla would spread rumours and gossip about you without a thought besides I didn't start the story it's been around since before I came to this board.
