Hi Rena, when I take a look at the picture that were made back in Tupelo during the talent contest as a child, he was wearing glasses then.
Also Larry Geller wrote in "I Was The One" that Elvis needed glasses in the 70's for reading.

Elvis did not wear glasses as an adult, although his sunglasses were prescription.
He did wear glasses for a short time as a child though. In fact, he was wearing them the day he came fifth at the 1948 Tupelo Fair and Dairy Show, where he sang Old Shep.

I thought he wore reading glasses as an adult, but never out in public.

Thanks for the info, ya'll, I thought he needed to wear reading glasses - that his trademark aviators were prescription. He looks great in them whatever the purpose.

Obviously Elvis was having fun in those pictures above. However there is a reasonble assumption that Elvis wore glasses for reading and not just the trademark large aviator glasses. Elvis by the Presley's has a picture of glasses which infers that they would have been Elvis'....

What's wrong with wearing glasses? Besides the name calling bit.I think some people look 'smarter' when they wear glasses. That's just my opinion tho' and yes,I do wear glasses.

Elvis wasn't diagnosed with glaucoma until March of 1971 - almost three years after this picture was taken. Elvis was most likely just havin' fun with the glasses in these two pics.

Seems I read something about Elvis having fun while wearing the Col.'s glasses......its possible (although I'm not 100% sure) that these pictures are this incident. Seems I also read that his trademark aviators were prescribed during the summer of 1970 b/c he did have trouble with this eyesight (totally unrelated to the glaucoma). And then sometimes later (late 70's) had contact lens made for the stage only as his glaucoma had progressed so much that he needed something to protect his eyes from all of the camera flashes and spotlights.

I think the glasses he was wearing on the set of Stay Away Joe are just for a joke. His other glasses weren't that plain.:D

Yes, thank you, honey. We are getting a lot of storms, losing power every time, Genie is gravely ill :'( I'm missing afriend :'( soooo hard....:'(
I'm short sighted, too, I feel that I may have initially damaged my eyes under bad light using a telex machine years ago; the optometrist said my near site will go as I age ......grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, hehe, young whipper snapper he was! lol.
I like Elvis wearing glasses, lol, although of course, I'm totally biased. :):):) I also really love one of those photos, of Elvis aging. :D:D:D:hug::king:

Hmmmm.....I think the contact lens for the stage story is a myth or rumor. I've never seen it in any reputable books.

And that is entirely possible as I do not recall where I read it. (I just finished re-reading Goldman's book, so that possible where I got that info ) When I figure it out, I'll let you know the souce. ;)

I'm sure the pics on the set of Stay Away Joe is Elvis fooling around with those glasses.
I also heard he had reading glasses.......never heard of contacts except for the fact that some were made for Flaming Star for him to wear for his role....they were brown.
I don't think he wore them for the movie either.Of course we all know of the glaucoma in one eye.Does anyone else have proof of reading glasses and any pics other than on the cover of Elvis By The Presley's?
