View Full Version : Is "The King" losing his crown?

I just watched The Morning Show on CBS and they had Briant Hiatt the associate editor of Rolling Stone magazine on and he talked about the latest controversial listing of the Top 100 Greatest Rock Singers Ever. Very, very little mention of Elvis despite listed at #3 and all the glory to Aretha.
Now I will say that she's always been amazing. But to put her or even Ray Charles ahead of Elvis is just plain snobbish on their part.(n)(n) After all it was the world in general who claimed him the King Of rock in the 50's. They (Rolling Stone) claimed they got their ratings from a large panel of today's top superstars from Mary J Blige to Carrie Underwood who all selected Franklin as the top. To me it sounds biased and an easy way to discredit Elvis for his groundbreaking success as if he means nothing anymore to the music industry.(n)(n)
This listing may be seen as just a waist of time to some Elvis fans or nothing to get upset about. But the reality is that lists like these slowly put Elvis in the backseat of music history and take away what was and still is rightfully his. It concerns me where this is all going. I also wonder if it's all some propaganda to tie in with Obama being the first AA president as a way to say look how far black people have come? The timing is too darn coincidental if you ask me.:hmm:
All this worries me because Elvis is being cheated by society and history is being rewritten as if it happened a different way. This is where the power of the tongue can be more dangerous than you realise. What's next? A list by Billbaord of the top selling artists and Elvis nowhere to be found?:hmm:
Now I know this is just a poll but this generation thrives on stuff like this as their source for facts about history. Kids today are very, very naive and will believe anything they read or you tell them whether it's the truth or some made up fabricated lie. To them it's the gospel and all that matters and it spreads generation to generation.:'(

This type of stuff bores me and I don't really get too involved. What Rolling Stone or Billboard says has absolutely no effect on the actually truth. Elvis' impact and legacy in intact, no matter what they say.
Keep in mind, RS didn't start until 15 years AFTER the birth of rock and roll.

Well you know it's just a poll. The result depends on the question that've been asked.
For me neither Aretha Franklin nor Ray Charles were rock singers at all. So the whole result might be wrong.
In fact it is ELvis who leads the list of the top-earning deceased celebrities. Elvis is the artist with the most sold records.
Every generation will discover him. It doesn't matter where they start. Over the Beatle you'll come to him. Over Sinatra, Springsteen, Joplin, even Madonna.
So don't care 'bout such polls.

See that's where you're wrong. The stuff like this poll does matter as it is the Bible to this generation. To you and I it may not mean a hill of beans what otehrs think. But to the kids who weren't around at that time to know the truth go by what they read and hear today and not through books written 40 years ago, it does.
If young artists today are calling Aretha and Ray Charles bigger than Elvis then imagine what the younger kids are thinking when they read this.

And that is why I'm not wrong, I couldn't care less what this generation thinks of Elvis. Anyway, I think they are smart enough to make up their own minds if they want to.
Like I said, Elvis' legacy and impact in intact......and always will be.

Well, the one who is best known by anybody around the world is Elvis I think, I mean...ofcause I`ve heard both Aretha and Ray`s names before, but quickly name a song by any of them....no, I can`t do that(Maybe I can listen to a song and say...oh yes, I`ve heard that one before, but who is singing).....Atleast I could easily mention 10 songs by Elvis even before I became a fan.
In the near future I`m going to watch the movie "Ray"....hope that helps a bit getting to know his voice and songs better.
Only yesterday I found out, that the song "Don`t play that song for me" was original by Aretha.....I always thought that it was a DR. Hook song...

I think that's a bit of a stretch, to put it mildly. Besides, after looking at your siggy pic I'm sure Obama will make everyone be an Elvis fan.;);)

There has been a slow rewriting of Rock history in the last couple generations
the many editors at places like Rolling Stone, Blender, etc...are now people born in the 60s and they think Rock began with the Beatles era.
My daughters get Rolling Stone and Blender and music from the 50s gets little mention. But to name Franklin the top of the list ????
She is a wonderful singer, fantastic voice but is much more R&B and soul to be called Top of Rock on any list. I am not surprised as these polls come out.
But the "Big Bang of Rock poll" done I think by Rolling Stone a few years back said "Thats All Right" and Elvis was the big bang of rock.
Many will scratch their heads at Arethra at the top of Rock.

I don't need a poll to tell me how great Elvis' voice is. To me a poll is just statistics, his voice is so much more than that and therefore IMO can't be measured by a poll.

Elvis will always be the king as long as Elvis fans raise their kids knowing that he was the king
Doesnt matter what anyone else says or which poll comes out next.

Agreed very much. RS magazine (IMO) isn't a really good source to base these kinds of things on.

I agree. To me, Aretha and Ray are more rhythm and blues singers rather than pure rock & roll singers so....the poll is flawed, IMO.
If it weren't for Elvis, I dare say that a lot of these singers (Aretha and Ray Charles included) probably wouldn't have had a career.

Peoples are jealous of Elvis Presley because they called him The King Of Rock 'n' Roll,
And He's being Top singer even today,32 years later.
I understand that they want to trow him from the first place.
RAY CHARLES????How can he be better then Elvis???
I think we should see how many museum's,web sites, impersonators, fans does Elvis Have.Elvis earned 52 million dollars in 2007,and Madonna just 40 millions.
Those are statistics we should watch.

Elvis has been downgraded in various polls for years now, so this doesn't suprise me one bit.
It is quite sad, because like it or not, the man set the standard for so many artists, yet he still can't be given the credit and respect he deserves.

No way, no how. Elvis will outlive us all. Sillerman or no Sillerman. Graceland or no Graceland. He's to American music and culture as King Tutankhamun is to Ancient Egypt. Oh yeah, screw what those one sided mags have to say.(n)

Even though there are many new kids becoming Elvis fans, but there is still a big majority of them that think "jumpsuit, 900 pounds, fried-peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich" when they hear the name "Elvis." I mean, if you were to pull a random kid off the street and asked him what he thought of Elvis, they would probably say "Oh! Jumpsuit and overweight and died on the toilet!" then laugh.
So in my opinion, Elvis is starting to lose his crown.

History speaks for itself. The kids today are as dumb and uneducated as a cactus.
They think whoever's hot today is some icon of the century. Everyone has come and gone but Elvis. And he never will go as far as a historical figure. Sure Graceland may not be there forever. It could get blown away by a tornado or some thugs from the area could rob it and destroy it. Especially if that part of town continues to fall apart. They may stop selling his records one day. but that won't stop him from being mentioned in history unless we become a world of dictation and his name is removed from all records like they did to Akhenaten in Ancient Egypt. But we'll all be dead and gone before anything like that ever happens if it ever does.

Yes, that is true, but today's youth are the carriers of Elvis' legacy, unfortunately.

Let me sum this thread up by saying....NO ONE - past, present, or FUTURE, will ever wear The King's crown. He is the biggest phenomenon this planet has ever seen. He will go down in history as the one and only KING!

Alot of the members on the Elvis Insiders weren't even born by the 10th year anniversary of his death. That's how young many of them are. The fact of the matter is his fans are getting younger with time. Elvis is like a magnet. No matter how hard you try to get away you still get pulled in.

I hope you are right that the fans are getting younger, because from what I'm seeing, I'm quite worried.

Youngsters are not blind. Or deaf
Elvis Presley was/is so much a part of popular culture his young image is also everywhere.
Dr Vernon Chadwick a Mississippian, and founder of "The International Conference on Elvis Presley", told me he had thought Elvis was old hat till he visited Europe as a student, and there he saw images of Elvis all over the place!
That's what lead him to totally rethink his attitude to Elvis. He became an authority on all things Elvis in a matter of a few years by concentrated study.
Underestimating the intelligence of young people is not the way to go. Even the dumbest can be enlightened. I should know. :-)

Elvis' crown will remain forever with him. He's very important in music history and to all his (growing) fans.
His historical crown can never be taken from him.
Each year someone will be hot, but check on them 31 years after they die to see how hot they really were.

I think we are agreeing on this Ken. Additionally, the mere fact that Elvis achieved his historical and cultural significance which set the stage for any future entertainer is important, combined with his incredible success 31 years after his death cannot be disputed. If we are ever to see someone earn a place in history equal or better than Elvis, we won't see that for some time as Elvis has reined supreme for 31 years plus the 23 years of his career for a mind-boggling 54 years. We'll have to wait at least this long for someone to come along and snatch it away!!!!!!!!

I don't believe anyone will ever snatch Elvis' crown away no matter what kind of impact they make on the musical world as he was unique and what he contributed can never be taken away.

I agree Diane....along with the fact that the world has changed so much since Elvis came along in the 50's. We live in such a high-tech, instant gratification society that nothing really grabs people for very long anymore.:blink:

I will say this once..............no way shape or form will ELVIS PRESLEY loose his crown.
This man is the biggest selling artist of all time. The greatest single event of the 20th century.THE ONE AND ONLY KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL.No one can or ever will compare to his immense talent.
There are alot of younger people who are seeing what he's all about. The records speak for themselves.
