Should Graceland/EPE make a bid?

Itīs a FAKE record.
The original demo acetate is property of Ed Leek. Elvis gave this record to his school friend in 1953. In 1988 Ed Leek lend this record to EPE.
Sam Phillips NEVER was made this demo with SUN RECORDS logo. The demo has stick from MEMPHIS RECORDING SERVICE (Marion Keisker put the sitck).
This record in sale is not an acetate is a VINYL (see the image). And Sam Phillips not transfered demos to vinyl.

Can you be more specific?
javierTCB
11-12-2008, 06:21 PM
OK friend, Iīll be more specific:
Fact 1: the advice of “My Happiness” demo in E-bay on october 13:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 26_fvi%3D1
Here is direct E-bay descriptions of demo:
LETS KEEP THE RECORD COLLECTING FUN AND EXCITING WITH NO RESERVES ON ALL MY AUCTIONS!!!!!!!
“Here offered is the 78rpm ACETATE single of: ELVIS PRESLEY on the SUN label.. The song title : THATS WHEN YOUR HEARTACHES BEGIN.Label is nice with slight yellow aging spots and has DJ writing on it "as seen in the pictures. The vinyl-shellac is NEAR MINT "few very very very minor surface storage scuffs" and plays beautiful..This is a MEGA RARE 50's Elvis Presley acetate from the Sun Studios and what is very interesting is that under the Sun label you can see some of the first label that was put on this acetate and then changed it & the Sun label was applied over it.The label underneath is "Memphis Recording Studio" and does have typed information on it that appears to have Elvis' name and same song title that is on the Sun label..The only reason I can come up with is that it is marked for Radio Play and that the Sun label was to be mentioned by the DJ instead of Memphis Recording Studio which was the pipeline to Sun Studio, which were basically the same I believe. Also to mention is that the version of the song on this acetate is shorter then the commercial release on the RCA label..I did not study this acetate to hear if there are any major vocal or music differences except noticing the shorter ending.
I have owned this acetate for several years along with a few other same acetates with different artist.I have only seen a few of these early Sun & Memphis Recording Studio acetates through the years and to my knowledge only 1 has come up for auction on eBay a few years ago and sold for almost $5000.00 The only history I know of this acetate is that it was stored away at the Select-O-Hits warehouse and surfaced sometime in the late 60's and landed in a collectors hands who owned it untill I purchased it..It has NEVER been offered for sale untill now!! So here is your chance to obtain a rare piece of Rock-N-Roll history and most likely a one of a kind!!! I did place a very reasonable reserve on this record due to my investment as I usually do not put reserves on my auctions as noted”
Fact 2:
The advice from http://irelandtoo.blogspot.com/ writes:
"Elvis Presley 1953.
The year he made his first vanity recording for 4 dollars!, "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin".
The Acetate disc was given to a friend, Ed Leek. Leek had attended the same High School as Elvis and they were good friends. The historic recording vanished from sight till 1988. Now it is up for sale!".
(I ask: What is the real source of Irish Blogger?)
Fact 3:
One thing is Ed Leek story and other is “My Happiness” demo topic. Here starts the confusion.
After many days and discussions in FECC forum the conclusion about this demo was: is fake! The same information was published on elvisinfonet.com in this way:
"EP Gold reports: Friends of Ed Leek contacted me by EMAIL and telephone about the "My Happiness" Acetate. They sent me a recording of Ed Leek Telling his side of the My Happiness story, and an email they received from him about their friendship. The taped recording now on CD Is a fascinating first hand account of the Historic event, in a fine Memphian accent! This story has nothing to do with a recent sale of a Sun fake apparently sold on EBAY. Maurice Colgan". http://irelandtoo.blogspot.com (News, Source: Ireland Too /EP Gold/Elvis News)
(please check the words: “This story has nothing to do with a recent sale of a SUN fake apparently sold on EBAY”:hmm: )
And elvisinfonet add:
My Happiness acetate for sale?: In 1953 Elvis Presley made his first vanity recording for US$4.00. The songs he recorded on the one-time acetate were "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin". The acetate disc was given to a friend, Ed Leek who had attended the same high school as Elvis. The historic recording vanished from sight until 1988 when it was released by BMG. The original disc is now up for sale according to an Irish blogger”.
(I ask again: What is the source of Irish Blogger? This blogspot gave incomplete information and not explain that Ed Leek story is one story and sold of demo is other)
Fact 4:
Please check the price and details in EBAY at november 13:
Winning bid: US $2,302.77 (approximately Ģ1,472.45)
Ended: 13-Oct-08 13:53:20 BST
Post to: United States
Item location: Griffith, Indiana, United States
History: 35 bids
Winning bidder:User ID kept private
The questions:
1.- If RCA paids 500.000 dollars to Ed Leek in 1988 for loans "My Happiness". Then: How much paid a purcharser in EBAY for this autentic piece of history? US $2.302.77? :hmm:
3.- Whereīs Letter of Authenticity from EPE? :hmm:
4.- Who is the vendor? Not is Ed Leek.
5.- Why would Sam Phillips have made a “radio play only” acetate of a personal recording?
6.- The image of EBAY shows a vinyl, not an acetate.
7.- Sun Label logo was not used to acetates.
8.- What means the title of description:
“LETS KEEP THE RECORD COLLECTING FUN AND EXCITING WITH NO RESERVES ON ALL MY AUCTIONS!!!!!!!”
9.- What means:
“NOTE- ALL OF THE RECORDS I AM OFFERING FOR SALE ON EBAY ARE GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINALS AND NOT REPRO'S OR FAKES IN ANY WAY.I GUARANTEE THIS FULLY WITH A FULL MONEY BACK GUARANTEE”. :lmfao:
This is incredible: you can return it if not satisfied!!!!! Itīs the master piece of musical contemporary history and you can return if not satisfied!!!!!!!
All this looks mighty suspicious. To me, and others, this thing is fake.
Whatīs your opinion?
Take Care (y)

javierTCB, Thanks for taking the time to reply at length .
On EP Gold the Ed Leek update was to enlighten those on FECC that the NEW "My Happiness" to be SOLD story was just that.
In the rush to mock the Irish Blogger certain people have made fools of themselves as this is an unfolding story and not all the details are known.
I'm a cynic too :-) but I like to base my conclusions on factual evidence... not hearsay!
The history of the "My Happiness" recording is so well known only a complete fool would try and pull a fast one concerning it.
Like selling Leonardo's, Mona Lisa! :D

I would agree that the history of this recording is well known-Unfortunately complete fools do try this type thing, prisons are full of them.
Clifford Irving comes to mind. So its very hard in todays world to know what is factual and what is scam. I think a prudent thing for anyone involved in internet sales or auctions should be- buyer beware.

KPM, The provenance of this historic item would be studied minutely by potential buyers. The Acetate of "My Happiness" is of Major importance, and bound to get a lot of media coverage before any Sale.
After all Ed Leek himself would be the seller.

Evidently there is still some question as to the authenticity since, if I read this correctly, recently supposed fake Sun acetate was sold on EBay:

Perhaps if you searched Ed Leek My Happiness on www.google.com you would find some up to date info? I did.

The original demo no have stick with SUN logo.
The original demo have a white stick write for Marion Keisker in her Smith-Corona typewriter. Please check photos from original demo of "My Happiness" in your copy of book-dvd-vinyl "Memphis Recording Service - The Beginning Elvis Presley-The Birth of Rockīn Roll (volume 1, 1953-1954)" from Joseph Pirzada and John Michael Heath (2005, MRS 100209). The photos shows A and B side from original first recording acetate (please look at page 16).
In the page 15 writes about "My Happiness" demo session:
"When he finished singing Marion got the acetate and brought Elvis back to the office. There she typed the labels for the disc on the studios Smith-Corona typewriter.
She used the reverse of a record label by "The Prisonaires" of the song "Softly and Tenderly", SUN 189 also recorded in august 1953. On the acetate it was written "I Spots" with a grease pencil directly on the plastic. The purpose of this designation is so those applying the labels to comercial releases will be able to place the correct label on both sides of the record. It was just a fluke that Marion used one of the printed SUN labels from another release instead of the standard red and white labels, normally used by the "Memphis Recording Service".
This trancription is literal.
About the fake demo: please check EBAY photos and you can see one only side in the disc. The original demo have two: "My Happiness" (A side) and "Thatīs When Your Heartaches Begin" (B side) without SUN logo.

NO!!!!!!
Ed Leek to me is a very important man in Presley history. To me is a very respectable person. Iīm talking about the sold on EBAY. Nobody knows at man who sold the record. In nowhere part of EBAY writes: ED LEEK. Look at please EBAY link. Nowhere!!!!
Please read my post about description of "My Happiness" demo and compare the photos of EBAY link. Is obvious.
Are you saying Ed Leek sold a Fake on Ebay?
I know I am not saying that-I am just pointing out that everyone who buys anything on Ebay needs to be very very careful of what they are purchasing.
Long before Ebay ever existed-when you could look people in the eye who were selling you things people were taken and a phrase was born:
"Buyer beware"
Its even more true in this day and age when you do not see the people involved over the internet eye to eye.
Fraud of all kinds is still alive and well in 2008.
The internet is a wonderful thing-but it lends itself to the bad elements of life very easily. That is my point.
