Feb 18th 1973, Sunday, Midnight show.

Four men jumped on stage toward the end of Elvis' performance at the midnight show. Sever members of the entourage rush to defend Elvis, and Elvis himself knocks one of his presumed assailants back into the audience. When order is finally restored, Elvis tells the audience, "I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen. I'm sorry I didn't break his god**** neck is what I'm sorry about".

You can find the show on the CDR titled "I'll Whoop His A$$".

Or so the story goes.

The four guys on stage were merely drunk and wanted to say hi more closely. There are conflicting reports as to whether they actually got close enough for Elvis to have touched one of them.

But that never stopped Elvis from telling the story, to where it eventualy became him kicking them all off stage himself! There was also the exaggeration of the guys being part of some crime syndicate that wanted to take Elvis out. But no, they were just four fools with too much piss in their system.

Isn't that the incident that Elvis was convinced was staged by Mike Stone?
I think Jerry Schilling mentioned that in his book.

Here's Sean Shaver's account:

http://www.silvesterselvispage.com/killer1.html

It's pretty interesting and combines a few tidbits from different sources, giving the most complete look at the incident that I've seen. I also always thought that the account of one (two?) of the Memphis Mafia types that claimed Elvis just punched and kicked the air was written that way just in hopes of making Elvis look ridiculous, which is a pretty transparent part of the agenda of some of these people.

A friend of mine asked one of the stamps about this incident shortly after it happened in 73.Obviously he was on stage when it happened and had a good view.He was told Elvis and the boys overreacted bigtime. There was no real threat to Elvis. The account given by Shaver may be just a bit outlandish also.

It may well be true that there was no real threat to Elvis but, at the time, his people would be desperately remiss if they didn't take it seriously and react, worrying about the context later. And any martial artist or bodyguard who doesn't assume the worst -- knife, gun, or whatever -- is not very good at what they do.

Thanks for that. Was funny to read that elvis got pissed that the guys didn't let him have atleast 2 or 3 of those guys to kick their butt right there in front of the fans.

I think even with those guys just being drunk and obnoxiious, if you're sitting in the audience, & a bunch of guys rush up on stage trying to reach Elvis, & a bunch of other guys start defending Elvis, your imagination gets going and you get a little "hysterical".
This was a time when murder sprees were going on - people wanting their 5 minutes of fame anyway they could get it.

Just an observation.

Have you ever heard of four men wanting to jump up high onto a stage, to another male entertainer, just to say "hello" and get closer?

Does that make sense, at all? Not to me.

Women who are caught up in the excitement and their fantasies, yes! But men?:hmm:

I agree, too, security had to do their jobs, there wasn't time to say :

"Giddaayy mate, how ya doin'? What are your intentions, with your other three friends on stage, while Elvis is in the middle of entertaining the audience....oh...just to say "hello" well, then, fine, FOUR MEN, go ahead then!":blink:

Again, a good observation:

It may be that overreaction took place-but after several years of cross country touring and the Vegas dates, and many many threats which it seems were taken seriously by all-any group movement of males onto the stage might just cause alarm bells to go off with everyone including Elvis.

The band on the Titanic kept playing, even as the ship started going down. They knew they wouldn't get to a lifeboat, so they all died.

Add alcohol into the mix, and it's no surprise whatsoever.

It was the 18th Feb 1973.
It happened at the end of Suspicious Minds, and Elvis would have been introducing the group next, when the guys got up on stage to challenge Elvis to Karate... Since they had started playing the riff, they just kept on playing it, until the guys are taken away in handcuffs... with the audience going wild and cheering.

(some other things happened earlier in the show because of this group... and even a bottle was rolled across the stage, when Jackie Kahane was on)

Elvis never did introduce the group at this show... or the one on the 15th Feb.

Hope that helps...... sincerELy... REX

The stage wasn't very high, when standing on the table only a very small step up to the stage.

This season had the ramp out from the stage for the first time (Feb 73)

Long tables are either side of the ramp from the stage, going back to the first set of booths.

This group (12 in the party) was at the left side of the ramp (when looking at the stage)

Earlier a female in that group, got on stage, walked up to Elvis, took the tip of Elvis' scarf - without touching him, circled it off from behind his collar, walked back from the stage, onto the table, down to almost the head of the table, stepped onto her seat, then to the floor, and gave the scarf to the guy that was the leader of the group... He was the one to get on stage first.

I know because I saw this show... in the balcony - from front row - centre - at one of the Small Round Tables, directly behind Bill Porter in the sound Booth.

Hope this helps to understand the layout a little clearer..

Rex Martin: Since you were at the show, what can you remember from the actual "fight" that took place? Did the body guards handle the men on stage themselves without Elvis making contact, as some accounts describe it. Did Elvis indeed make connect with a kick delivered to one of the men on stage?

Hi.. in November 2008 I was interviewed by phone with Nigel Patterson at ELVIS INFORMATION NETWORK (E.I.N) It was such a long phone call they put it up in 3 PARTS. In the 3rd part I talked about the 1973 season, this is the section about the 18th February.
--------------------------------------------------------

..........Then 3 days later on the 18th of February they had the riot show on stage where the Peruvians got up and attacked him in a karate stance type of way. In fact it started even before Elvis came on stage. During Jackie Kahane’s segment they rolled an empty beer bottle across the stage to his shoe. And then three songs into Elvis’ act a girl from the group got up on the table and walked down the table and onto a ramp which came out from the stage. She walked on to the stage and up to Elvis and without touching him she used the tip of her finger and thumb to take his scarf then circled it from around his neck and walked back down the ramp and on to her table where she gave it to the leader of the group (at the head of the table). This was the guy who would later attack Elvis. But what she did was such a weird thing to do ~ any other female fan would have hugged and kissed Elvis ~ she seemed to be in some sort of Trance!! and I mean the audience went in to a hushed silence.

Elvis then did Suspicious Minds and of course he always ends it with a karate kick. At this stage one guy got up and then another guy, so there were two of them going across the ramp towards Elvis. The stage is so wide that Elvis probably wouldn’t have seen them coming on stage from where he was standing. They would have been in the shadows. And then Jerry and Sonny and Red were all rushing to the centre of the stage to protect Elvis. Then a third and forth guy got up and there was almost a melee fight with karate kicks and everything. (Elvis was in the middle of that Group)

And it has not been printed before but Rosemary Leech was kicked in the eye. A lot of fans will know Rosemary’s name as she was a very well known fan at the time.(Len and Rosemary Leech Elvis Photos!)

We really couldn’t print the story at the time because she was in litigation with the Hilton and they were upstairs in her room every night after the 18th to the 23rd discussing the issue. And Yanique Diskin (Mrs Diskin) was there and was told by the Colonel not to get involved between an Elvis fan and the Hilton.

Anyway after the fight was over Elvis said off mic, “I’ll never let any mother f*****s do this on my show!” On mic he said, “If a man wants to shake my hand that’s fine, but if he wants to pick a fight I’ll Wup his ***!” in a really deep Southern, angry voice.

Then Rosemary was brought up on stage and they set up a chair for her on the far right hand side of the stage and her husband 'Len' stood behind her as Elvis did the next three songs to finish the show. Elvis wouldn’t have seen her from where he was.

While the fight was going on the TCB Band were playing the introduction for their intros plus whoever might be a guest in the audience and throughout the fight they didn’t stop playing that intro music. And in the end Elvis didn’t do any introductions because he was so mad. In fact at one point his father and Tom Diskin were holding him back because he was so angry about what had happened. (To see Vernon and Tom next to Elvis in the Centre of the stage was something that was very unusual ~ in the middle of an Elvis show)

After the show Elvis was asking if anyone had been hurt and he was told that no one had. In the West’s book that was when he was pacing up and down and wanted Mike Stone killed. That was all a link to the on stage event.

The four Peruvian guys were handcuffed and taken away to loud cheers from the audience. And strangely then Rosemary (with Len) had to be checked out at the hospital and they took her there in the same van as these four guys!!!

EIN: What happened with Rosemary's litigation?

RM: Well, afterwards the Hilton people were saying to Rosemary that if she didn’t accept the settlement they were offering they’d ban her from seeing Elvis which obviously really upset her. As it turned out it was something they couldn’t do. It was actually quite nasty between the Hilton and Rosemary for the last four days of the season. Rosemary kept going to the shows but the incident was hanging over her enjoyment and she also had partial blurred vision in one eye. Eventually she accepted a sum of money from the Hilton. A long time has now passed since the incident so I think the story can be told.

--------------------------------------------------------------
extra: Rosemarie isn't sure who it was that kicked her Eye, everything happened very fast, and with so many people on stage, its hard to work out who kicked who, Elvis did get to the guys up close, but without film and viewing it in slow motion, its hard to say who hit who between the attackers-Elvis and the MMafia
