Hi Kayley...and a BIG WELCOME....and yes it is difficult when you first start collecting the King as to where to begin.Theres so much official (studio-movies-concerts-outakes-box sets) you get my point ?
I guess i been collecting nearly 30 yrs..and i still am ! (y) but your collection so far is good with a nice sellection. A good collection to start on would be the FTD range with plenty of choice , good sound , and decent packaging (most times). I wont get into the BOOTLEG side as that would take another lifetime... :) so just enjoy Elvis...hed like that.
...at the risk of being a traitor I'm curently listening to John Lee Hooker.....I'm diggin' the blues right now ;)

WELCOME TO THE BOARD KAYLEY!!! WE HOPE YOU WILL LIKE IT HERE!!! (y)
As for which Elvis CD I am listening to right now, it's my ALL TIME favorite Elvis album - TODAY!! This album just has it all in my opinion....country, rock, ballads....it's just such an AWESOME album, in my opinion!! :D
As for which Elvis CD's to consider purchasing, if you are a 70's Elvis fan (and it sounds to me like you are), you NEED to find yourself a copy of the FTD release THE JUNGLE ROOM SESSIONS!!! An absolutely EYE OPENING CD, in my opinion....many people would have you believe that Elvis was not interested in making music by 1976 and was just bored with the whole music making process. But, one listen to THE JUNGLE ROOM SESSIONS will give you a whole new appreciation for the effort that Elvis was putting into his music, even in 1976!!! It's simply an OUTSTANDING CD....one that should be in EVERY Elvis fans collection, in my opinion!!
ONCE AGAIN....WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!! (h)

That's interesting Lildarling that you enjoy listening to all of the between song banter from Elvis on DRAGONHEART? For me, that's one of the drawbacks when I listen to DRAGONHEART or IT'S MIDNIGHT...for as great as Elvis' voice sounds during these shows, I just can't get past how much time he spends talking, goofing around, etc. Whenever I hear that, I just keep thinking about how many more songs he could have performed instead of all the on-stage banter! But, that's VERY COOL that you enjoy the banter!! (h)
As for what you should listen to tonight, although I am biased because it's my favorite album, I have to say you just can't go wrong listening to the TODAY album!!! :D ;)

Not to nitpick...
It's actually been a while since I've played either, but as I recall, there are worlds of difference between It's Midnight and Dragonheart. In my opinion, Elvis' vocal condition, his mood, and state of mind in general were far better on the former.
But generally speaking, I prefer the less chatty shows as well. It would be different being there in person (and that is who Elvis was playing for--not us, 30 years later) or even watching video, but just listening to some of the horseplay and such doesn't always come across with the same punch it originally had.

Have to agree Bobby and Mike,
although the 'chatty' shows are great to have...and to listen to now and again....if you had to pick a show to listen to...when you only have the time for one.....doubtful you would go with this type of show.
On a separate issue...regarding Dragonheart....i thought that it had a bad rap.....i thought it was a reasonably good show  ...and though i agree with some of the things that have been said....its by no means as bad as its made out by some......and just to be sure...i am playing it right now (y)

Last weekend I decided to play the 2CD "The Country Side Of Elvis". And it was a wonderfull experience: I found out it was the first time that I listened to it?!
And since I enjoyed it so much I decided to make a playlist with country/blues/folk only songs. I selected songs throughout Elvis' whole carreer. Fantastic! All of a sudden I hear songs that I've last heard many months ago. Tracks like "All I Needed Was The Rain", "Hi Heel Sneakers", "Clean Up Your Own Backyard", "DOminic", "You'll Think Of Me" and "Susan When She Tried".... amazing...
There's no artist that covers so many genres and musicstyles. And no one has more voices than Elvis.

Man, you just killed me.
Suddenly, I had a revelation: Elvis never played for me, he never knew I will exist in this world, that I will be a fan spending days and nights searching and learning about him.
For Elvis,"fans" meant those that came to the concerts then, those who bought the records then.
From Elvis' point of view, I don't exist as a fan. :'(
Well, that's true. Sadly, Elvis did not realize the full extent of his impact on people. I mean, he saw and appreciated the adulation of his fans, but I don't think he thought he'd have staying power well beyond his years. But now he's been selling records for more years than his recording career covered, and he has sold more than he did in his lifetime.
That's another reason it's such a shame that he didn't get to tour abroad (besides depriving many of you of the chance to see him): if he had, it really would have felt like the fifties all over again, with a much more mainstream devotion to him, and he might have had a better grasp of how just how big he still was.
You can't blame him though for not foreseeing that a non-professional recording of a concert, or a home recording, or some goofing around in the studio, or whatever, would be released one day by his record label. How likely is that? But hey, in many ways it's good he didn't think that would ever happen, otherwise the stuff we get wouldn't be half as interesting.
Although...and maybe this was just a matter of his being confused, but on the Goodbye Memphis show, he said something goofy and then, "I don't know what I just said, but it's all on record and it'll come out later," or something to that effect. Think he knew it would be 21 years later on a bootleg CD?

I hope I didn't come across as being too harsh on IT'S MIDNIGHT and/or DRAGONHEART...
I think both shows are quite good EXCEPT for Elvis being too chatty! If it weren't for that, I would have IT'S MIDNIGHT and DRAGONHEART in my CD player at all times!! They are both exceptionally great shows, with lots of different songs being performed in both! In both shows, Elvis' voice sounds FANTASTIC, in my opinion!! It's just the numerous and lengthy monologues that Elvis engages in during these shows, which detracts from my personal enjoyment of them!
I apologize if my remarks made it sound like I didn't like either of these shows at all....it's quite the contrary....I personally enjoy both shows immensely, and I think Elvis is VOCALLY at the top of his game during both shows, for the most part...but unfortunately because of all the chattiness on Elvis' part, I don't listen to them as often as I do other shows!
Sorry if I caused you any confusion Night Rider!! ;)

Hi Mike,
No my friend....you didn't cause confusion....i knew exactly what you meant because i regard it exactly the same.
I was reffering to shortly after it was released. Remembering at the time that it got absolutely ripped apart on FECC......people saying that the show was one of the worst they had ever heard....etc..etc....
I think its a perfectly good release, as are most of the FTD's. ( apart from the artwork). I just don't know what some people want. Do they think that every single show was absolute perfection ?
It was in no way directed at you mate ;) (y)

Sorry for the misunderstanding...when I first read your post, I thought you were referring to me and that I had been too harsh in my criticism of DRAGONHEART!! After I went back and read it again, I realized that they were in fact two separate thoughts that you were commenting on!! So, it was my mistake....SORRY about that!!!
I agree with you that, aside from the artwork and the lengthy monologues, DRAGONHEART really is a decent enough CD. Just wish I could bring myself to pop it into my CD player more often....but everytime I listen to it, and he goes off on one of his chatty tangents, it reminds me of why I don't listen to it very often (which is a shame, I know!)
Anyway...thanks again for the clarification pal!! I appreciate it! ;)

Then onto Promised Land.....which has to be one of my favourite Elvis albums.....Some real beauties on here.....Your Love's Been A Long Time Comin'......Honky Tonk Angel.....Thinking About You.....tracks not often mentioned....but these are the sort of tracks that should be pushed into the public eye

The new site should be up either today or tomorrow.....i still have a bit of work to do on it....including finishing off the Avatar sections - which have all been re-sized ( and include many new Avatars ) and can be used on the board of your choice - though hopefully it would be this board ;)
The Avatars can be used by anyone.....the only thng that i ask is that you let me know...as i will re-do them every so often....and i wouldn't want to delete any that are in use....
Its a completely new design....made by myself....and its the first time i have done my own totally ( i have normally used templates before)....so there may be a few Gremlins when it first comes on line....... :'(

Love the new discs when they arrive.
'Closing Night' playing LOUD in the car is perfect commuting music.
Such a fascinating CD & (captivatingly) emotionally all-over-the-shop and great sound too.

Curtis, I know 'Hey Jude' isn't a popular track with many, but I gotta say I love hearing the 1969 redition from Elvis, I really do. Regardless, thats a great 2 disc set there, 'The Memphis Anthology'. (y)

The first compilation CD I made for my co-worker's birthday, beginning with Blue Moon (which she only knew from Rod Stewart's recent version!!!) through to "How The Web Was Woven".
I just put some of my fave Elvis songs through the years/decades on there, including "The Girl Of My Best Friend", "Like A Baby", "High Heel Sneekers", "Power Of My Love", "This Is The Story" (my current fave song!) and more.
Then I have made another CD for her with some live stuff, some funny outtakes and some early takes of several songs, to let her hear how songs were developed. (y)

Lately it's been a pretty continuous stream of EOT The Rehearsals tracks coming from my CD player. That FTD is simply fantastic.
I'll tell you a funny thing...My youngest son, 2 years old, was listening to that CD with me the other day. Separate Ways came on, and I kid you not, I don't think more than a second and a half of music had passed when he said, "Plane!" He was referring to the scene in EOT featuring that very track, which he loves because of the airplane.
My boy, my boy! :king:
This time, Lord, you gave me a mountain...That's a neat one-liner at the beginning of that track.

I have been going through all of my cd-r bootlegs lately trying to get them sorted out, so I have been listening to everything from the Sun records days to his last concert :D But lately my 2 year old has me listening to "rugrats", "spongebob squarepants", " all grown up", and a few other cartoons  Since I am currently between jobs :D He keeps me real busy and I wouldn't have it any other way :D

Having recently purchased the Aloha From Hawaii 2-disc DVD set, I've been listening to those songs a fair bit as of late. While Elvis turns in some lacklustre performances on certain numbers, there are some pretty incredible pieces, too. I was pleased - and amazed - to discover that the rehearsal version of "An American Trilogy" is even better, from a vocal point of view, than the version that was performed and broadcast around the world. When Elvis sings the final rendition of the chorus and the last word of the last line, "On!!!!", I'm surprised it didn't blew the roof off the stadium. It certainly blew my mind. And what's just as amazing is that he launches almost straight into the next song before he's barely had chance to catch his breath!

That's amazing. I just had `I Wanna Be Free' on in the car - although it was partly drowned outby my voice. first time i've played the CD (from 50s box set) for a long time.

Just a couple of things though, if you listen to Bridge Over Troubled Water it doesnt sound like a live recording but has applause on the end?
The version of Polk Salad Annie has the intro and kicks *** compared to the faster versions made in 1972 without the intro.

That's a nice choice... I like this song very much; underrated and relatively unknown, but Elvis' voice is strong. I've got two Elvis-Christmas Cd's.. I am listening to these rather often, although it's November.
Right now I am listening to Roy Orbison's live version of 'In Dreams'.. I also like versions of 'Crying', 'Running Scared' and 'It's Over'. Elvis liked Roy and I now know why! I also practice these songs myself just like Billy Gilman..!
