What are your thoughts when looking at this photo.
When you think about it, Elvis had only 5 months to live. We know how he hardly went out just to enjoy himself the last year or 2 of his life, and its like hes just soaking up all the sunlight like hes been out of it for a long time. Sad feeling I get when looking at this.

I agree thats probably exactly what Elvis would say "I just soaking some of the rays up man" lol He does look like he had lost quite a bit of weight there its amazing how he piled it all back on in just 5 months He must have been quite depressed and lonely at the end that is sad to think.:'(

Yep, when you think back to what you were doing 5 months ago yourself and how recent it seems, it certainly puts this into perspective.
Makes you want to start living your life differently. I wonder what Elvis might have done differently if he'd known how little time he had left when this picture was taken?
It's definitely a poignant photo with the advantage of hindsight.

Elvis needed more vacations like that last one in March "77'. He looks like he's meditating as well as soaking in some sun! He even felt good enough to play football with the guys!(y)

I'm really Glad to see him relaxed.
I wish he didn't get back to make concerts.
I wish he stayed there all his life and relaxing at the nature With his familly and friends.
I really don't understand what happend to him when he returned to graceland.
And How He died.

I believe that the stage suits made him look alot bigger than he really was. Maybe he should have just worn stuff like this on stage. Let his voice be the attention getter, and not the suits. Which during the later years were mostly unflattering.:notworthy

It's better to believe it was one of his last truly happy and relaxed days in our man's life.
Thinking of all the other pictures available from that last holiday, I must say he looked great in those.
It's like he was not (or hardly) on any medication those days, and then while having to tour he was, and true, that Sundail suit wasn't very flattering to say the least.
Diane
09-30-2008, 11:44 AM
It seemed the more stressed out he was about touring, the more medication he needed and that would apply to anyone in his shoes. He does look healthier, thinner and more relaxed on that vacation not having to "live up to the image", and I'm sure glad he had that to enjoy one last time.

I've read statements from Dr. Nick who say the same thing. That the movie and touring schedules made the drug problem 10 times what it was when he was not working. Now there may be some here that are quick to say "I don't believe anything Dr. Nick says." but the proof is in the picture. He looks so happy and relaxed in this picture and most of the other pictures taken in Hawaii on various vacations, that its hard not to disagree with his statement.

I also noticed in those vacation photos that even though it seems to be very hot and everyone else is dressed in shorts etc, Elvis is dressed in long pants and in black. Even on the photos of him playing ball/ soccer, he is dressed in pants and dark clothes. It just makes you wonder about his state of mind. Do you think he dressed like that because of his weight?

I think Elvis was always insecure about different things.(I'am the same)..that's just who he was,so I think he dressed that way becouse he was insecure of his body image...There might have always been someone that saw him,or people like us today that see the picture....He doesn't look big to me here, and to me he wasn't really big at all during his lifetime....He might have had a little flubber but ,I'am starting that trend a little bit as well...:lmfao:

I believe that the stage suits made him look alot bigger than he really was.
The belts certainly drew attention to his waistline, yes, but the suits themselves did not hide a thing. They left nothing to the imagination, and did not hide the flab, fat and extra weight.
Not at all, towards the end.

I actually thought he looked thinner in his street clothes or his jogging outfits. The jumpsuits themselves weighing so much just added to the heavy look IMO

So true, thats why almost all photo's i've seen of him offstage in 1977 look so much better than him on stage....
And as for the belts, I don't want to think of what it would've looked like had he not wore the belts with the suits, if he hadn't I don't think it would've made him look any slimmer. Just like people I see who say over and over again that Elvis shoud've gone back to wearing the two piece suits, I'm not so sure that would've helped cover the weight gain that much either.

Jumpsuits were cool and made him look fantastic when he was in good shape, but I have never understand his reason of wearing them when he was overweighted, it was not at all the best choice!
We has no longer the slim guy he was in Nov '70, but was not obese, just cool pants & dark shirts would have made him look much better on stage during the last 3 years of his life. The jacket trick would have also worked better than the jumpsuits, like wearing it for the first two numbers and the last one.
Going back to topic, the man needed vacations, that was one medical prescription he needed.

I also love him in the jumpsuits heavier or not but wish he had gone to two-piece suits so that he wouldn't have gotten the ridicule. He was never as bad as some liked to portrait him but that image should never have gotten started at all...it was never fair and it was extremely over-exaggerated.

I'm glad he remained the original, the way he was..it wasn't for Elvis to accept other's trends, besides I pity most of the men how they accept to dress similar to each other, just like wearing uniforms, this is what I call ridiculous, tragic even..I love Elvis's stage costumes and everyday clothes as well ..he was one brave and free mind for sure in a square world..every little detail made him who he was..so I don't see nothing to change anything in him..
