In the late 60's apparently Elvis and his cousin Gene had a fallout and Gene left the group, but in the later years still stopped by to see Elvis. Can anyone give more details as to what happened to cause the fallout and when the lasttime Elvis seen Gene?

It sounds like Gene was always a liability anyway, but the initial fallout occurred in the early 60s over an incident involving jewelry. He came back to visit from time to time- once upsetting Elvis in 1973 by asking him to buy a motorcycle which he liked.

I listened to Elvis' Man Friday on audio tapes...no way would I spend what was being asked for the book. I can't remember exactly what I paid, but I think it was around $15. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
What I got from the tapes was that Gene didn't fit in after Elvis made it big and the other guys starting come on board. Gene felt they were intent on taking over many of his responsibilites. I've read also that Gene left over a misunderstanding about some stolen jewelry(RMM), but Gene did not say anything about this in his book. He said that Elvis had asked him to come back to work for him several times...it was hard to pinpoint what Gene's reasons were for not returning even though he said it was because he wanted to be with his family.
About a week before 8/16/77, Elvis called Gene and asked him and his family to come to Graceland for a visit. I believe that was the last time Gene saw Elvis.

So I take it Gene did come with his family to visit elvis a week before he passed?

Yes, he did. I wish I could remember more to tell you about what they talked about... What I do remember though is Elvis was sad and expressed regrets about his life.

You're welcome- I wish I could provide more detail but a lot of the stories told about Gene are a little vague. He's an interesting topic to raise for that reason.
Most sources are in agreement that he was quite 'intellectually challenged' and shared the unfortunate Smith family weakness for drinking, which eventually made it difficult having him around.
If I remember correctly, Elvis once said something to Gene along the lines of "I'm paying you $150 a week to make me laugh and I haven't cracked a smile for a year".

It was difficult for some family members to deal with the changes in the family dynamics with Elvis's fame. It's complicated. Also, Elvis fussed with his family members like any typical family. But they usually eventually made ammends. But bare in mind that there weren't always grudges held when they were apart. Elvis was very forgiving and understanding. He knew he had faults and accepted others faults because of that. That forgiving nature I think he got from Gladys.
But no matter how the relationships were, Elvis was loved and he loved his family very much.

That all ties in with "Elvis knew his life was coming to an end"....which is a theory I don't subscribe to. Where did you read the information that Gene visited Elvis a week before he (Elvis) passed away?

As far as Gene and Elvis's 'fallout', it happened over some missing jewelery. The info can be found on page 251 in "Elvis Aaron Presley: Revelations Of The Memphis Mafia".

Yeah Tony I know very well what your thoughts are on the Elvis knew his life was coming to an end kind of talk. And I never said I beleive it either. Just odd I thought that he had Gene come over just a week before it happened and talked about the regrets in his life and stuff like that. I just find that interesting that is all, never said it was because Elvis knew the end was near.

Some family do have fallouts with eachtogther, but family was also very inportant to elvis so he would of made up with gene sooner or later. Elvis didn't hold gudges and he could forgive so easy which l really admire him in. friends or family elvis was always going to have them in his life no matter what happened with them and elvis.

I doubt if elvis was alive today we wouldn't have all the books we do from the people who were involved in his elvis life so really he wouldn't have that many to dislike or forgive .

The one book was published before his death. Nobody will ever convince me that he would have gotten over that one!! It was just starting to hit the streets when he died so he had not seen yet what that book was going to do to him. I do not think he would have gotten over that one very easily!

I agree it wouldn't have been easy. That book was on his mind that whole last year of his life. It's sad when you see the turn around he made from September to December of 1976. It was like he was determined to show Dave Red and Sonny that he was not sick and that he was not washed up and that he was still the King and could do it at 41. And he ended 1976 on the high note looked so thin, now if he had stopped there, and took months off in 1977 then that would've been good for him but unfortunatley he didn't go that road. You are right aswell Gail, I don't know if he was not really forgiving in the end, or more than anything he felt he just could not trust anybody at the end, I'm sure after that book was written he didn't really trust anyone and thats understandable.
Diane
10-04-2008, 11:25 AM
And he had every right to feel he couldn't trust anyone after some very close friends turned on him. Also I think it comes from getting older and having more experience with people. You don't trust as much as you did when you were young and naive.

And when I think about it, I think i do believe sonny when he said they did it to maybe bring a challenge to Elvis and I also beleive it was written out of bitterness to start with, at the beginning of the writing of the book I believe that was the reason mainly, but then I think Sonny and Red probably too saw it as maybe Elvis would look at it as a challenge to rise to the top again, and he did, until 1977 come around.....
Diane
10-04-2008, 12:38 PM
I do think they did it out of bitterness first then tried to rationalize what they'd done by hoping it would challenge him and do him some good but obviously, that wasn't the right way to go about it.
Sure he hurt them by having them fired after so many years but they weren't famous and so they didn't get the fierce negative publicity that Elvis got from their book. Also I truly believe that Red and Sonny would eventually have been asked back but not Dave.

Yes Billy said that Elvis said several times the last few months "don't they know I would take them back, don't they know that" and Billy would say no Elvis they don't know that, believe it or not, when you fired us, we never knew if it was for good or not.
So I believe he would've taken them back aswell Diane. And in the end In my opinion they tried to do the right thing, but went about doing it the wrong way.
