View Full Version : In a bad mood?

Have anyone ever seen or at least heard that Elvis acted like he was in a bad mood with fans? We all know that he had a bad temper and an unpredictable mood, but it seems that he was always sweet or friendly with his fans unlike some celebrities now who never hide their foul mood from the public.

Yes, I've heard of it happening once or twice. I think those days happen to everyone though.

yeah tha's what probably happend 'cuz i can never recall a time when elvis was in the media for misbehaving towards a fan not like todays celebrities that's also another reason why i admire elvis 'cuz of the way he treated his fan while performing today in day you never see any performer act toward his fans like elvis did

The only instance I can recall is during a concert, a female fan hollars I Love You, and he says, I love you, too, honey, then a male voice is heard to holler something like i hate you [don't remember the exact words] and Elvis responds - totally justified, imo, - '**** you'
there was a thread about this incident, too.

yup elvis did say that in a concert but other than that he was always the perfect host to any of his fans unlike stars of today who attack the media for trying to take a pic or run to get away from the fans i think elvis has probably signed more autographs than any other artist he did everything he could to please his fans cos without them he would not have been such a big star

There've been a few times when, in concert in the '70s, Elvis kind of snapped at some of the crazed women stageside. I wouldn't say he was in a bad mood during such times, but sometimes it just got a little too weird down there and I think there were times he'd had about enough of it for one night. Some of those fans could sometimes get way out of hand, and I have a feeling that there was a point at which Elvis either backed off a little or just outright told them to cool it, that point being at or beyond the moment in which these people's antics began to negatively affect the experience of the other concertgoers. You' expect some screaming and carrying on at an Elvis concert, of course, but sometimes things went way overboard with certain members of the audience (Elvis paid the price in scratches to his hands, too). You can also hear him, occasionally, get a little short with screaming audience members when he was trying to get across a particularly delicate rendition of a ballad that, at that moment, meant something special to him.

I also recall, on audio from more than one show (circa 1975-76? I can't recall which shows), Elvis kind of sarcastically thanking his audience for finally responding to something he did up on the stage. Again, not Elvis in a bad mood (well, not necessarily so and not overtly so) but Elvis with a less sunny edge, at least for a few moments. He usually covered it with smiles and quips, but there're certainly times when you're aware (okay, so some of those hysterical ladies may have remained blissfully unaware of this) that he'd pretty much had it up to the figurative 'here.' He was, after all, only human.

Yes when Elvis or before he sings Trilogy a woman does say "I love you Elvis". A man says "I hate you Elvis"! Elvis says F U and the crowd laughs!

I think that when Elvis said something unflattering to the fans, it was almost always with a smile on his face and meant as fun......as when he told someone to leave him alone....otherwise he would go back to his dressingroom and play with his foot.....LOL, or when he told a loud screaming lady to put some tape on her mouth....:D

"Thank you for that mediocre response (or applause?)," I recall him saying once during this time period...I couldn't name the show either.

I think there were a fair share of moments in which it wasn't too hard to detect when he was in a bad mood in the presence of fans, but not too often was it intended to be directed at them, I don't think.

Good call on that, too.

Not directly related but the occasion just came to mind I think in the summer of '75 when he called out a security guard for being a little rough with a fan who was just trying to get a scarf, punctuated with a 'goddammit'.

And then he goes right into the song like nothing happened. It was great.

This is from Elvis Presley from the pages of the Las Vegas Sun, interesting page

http://www.vegas.com/elvis/timelinearticles.html#1970

Columnist Ralph Pearl
Las Vegas Sun
Sept. 7, 1970

To Err is Human Dept.: It happened several nights ago to Elvis Presley at the International during one of his shows. The lad, who has set all kinds of fabulous attendance records, rarely drinks. But this night he did and was pleasingly inebriated when he worked the midnight show. Suddenly a heckler began annoying Elvis, who took it for about five minutes until he snapped at the drunk, "Shut up you Mother ------."

Sometimes it probably was but I get the feeling that when he said "**** you!" to a particular audience member, that he was a bit more annoyed.

Justified, sure. Humorous? Dunno. I'd be slightly embarassed, myself.

in comparison to how these celebrities handle their fans today, Elvis was extreamley cool with his fans. There are a few times he acted out but nothing to point of bad mood. He was of the mind set that, once they stop showing up to get your autograph you're not popular anymore.
I heard the audio clip of him, yelling, F you to a heckler but it's justified cause of what was yelled out to him.
another time I remember reading that he was stepping off the stage to his bodyguards aid and he said under his breath, "Man, them old people are weird", referring to the old fans that were on the front row. Guess he couldn't believe their obsession with a singer at that age.
but over all he was always nice. he would try to be fair with his scarves if he noticed that someone got a scarf snatched from them, he would tell the guards to bring her give another scarf. He also did that when gave out jewlery, he ask a guard to keep an eye on her.
He constantly went out to his gates to talk to his fans. Just the fact that he allowed it was cool. You drive up to some of these new stars home now, there will be a sign saying, "this home is protected by alarms and will not hesitate to use firearms to anyone who approaches the gates."

In Kerr's Sporting Goods Store in Beverly Hills sometime in 1974 - it seems something got Elvis upset...

Apparently, several fans noticed Elvis and asked for autographs. The owner wasn't to happy about this and said so to Elvis, which upset Elvis, and he and the owner had a few words...

From Steve M from the FECC message board - I'm sure that second pic is one taken outside the store, not 100% on that. I think the photographer was pissing Elvis off inside the store but Elvis declined to act out of respect for the store, but when the photographer persisted outside it seems Elvis got mad. Thing is Elvis was not one to object to his photo being taken, it's almost like he became immune to it or became so complacent with a camera being somewhere near him that he didn't notice it. I'm sure the photographer said something in order to generate a reaction from Elvis so that he could take a picture of the moment.

The sign on our gate is simple "we don't call 911"!!!!

You notice a minute or so into the song he laughs and says "Just kidding" so maybe he saw the humor in what had just happened or perhaps he was trying to cover his tracks so to speak. Either way its funny.

Ah well. He usually kept his anger for those who deserved it. As an entertainer he was rather easy-going and professional though. It would take quite a bit to upset him on stage and he was a dear compared to other celebrities.

wasn't it in Birmingham in 76 when First Time Ever was being performed and it got to the quiet stripped down part and there was some screaming and E shouted ' shut up' - also 31/12/76 when someone shouted 'sing it' before I think Rags to Riches - that pissed off E too

Yes that happened on December 29th 1976 Burmingham.

Rags to Riches was from December 31st 1976 Pittsburg New Years Eve concert.
