If you were limited in chosing between only these 2 recording sessions, which one would you choose and why? Each session is remarkable and memorable in its own way and each produced some great recordings.

The Sun Sessions were the first songs that recorded and are considered by some to be his finest. They also paved the way for what was to come later at RCA.

The RCA sessions in 1956 produced Elvis' first #1 song, "Heartbreak Hotel" and made him a household name.

Which do you feel is more important and why????

I'm torn because Heartbreak Hotel is probably the most important single ever released ever, whereas the Sun recordings, as a body of work, are of such a historical gravity that they're infallible. And Mystery Train is just supernaturally amazing, of course.
Yet the RCA canon is so big and there's so much important stuff in it.
I can't decide- I may have to sleep on it for now. :hmm:

I think the 56 sessions for me beat out the sun sessions.

Sam Phillips has said he didn't like heartbreak hotel and wouldn't have cut that song with him but it's the song that ultimately launched Elvis career, Elvis also recorded the leiber and Stoller song Don't be cruel and Hound dog as well as songs by Otis Blackwell and Don Robertson which if Elvis had stayed on Sun he probably wouldn't have recorded those songs either.

Sun for me, this was Elvis raw, the world had no idea what was round the corner, then there he was. Mystery Train is still one of my favourite early songs.

RCA tryed to sound like Sun recordings they couldn't find out slapback echo so Heartbreak Hotel sound like elvis singing in hotel's bathroom...:lmfao:

I think that enhances its 'lonely' feel, as anyone who has spent too much time in hotel bathrooms will attest.

Although the Sun Sessions represents the beggining of Elvis' career, I voted for RCA Sessions because "Heartbreak Hotel" the first #1 song, was one of his best songs and one of my favorites.

Sun - this was the music that changed the world. It is uninhibited and utterly brilliant

Of the two, Sun ... without question.

Without it, we wouldn't have even had the RCA '56 sessions.

If not for the "SUN Sessions" We're probably not even discussing RCA (or any other label that might have been). So I rate SUN more important.
But I prefer the early RCA material. Particularly "Elvis" (2nd album).

Getlo said it best, if it hadn't been for the Sun Sessions then the stuff from RCA in '56 wouldn't have never happened.

So my vote goes for Sun as well.

True. But if Jesse had lived instead of Elvis....we wouldn't have had anything ;).

True. But if Jesse had lived instead of Elvis....we wouldn't have had anything ;).

We really don't know what would've become of Elvis' had they both lived so you really can't say that as a fact.

I wasn't saying that as a fact, it was more a comparision like, if you are asked what do you like better, a glass of milk or a cup of hot chocolate? I presume you wouldn't say: Milk, because without milk I wouldn't have had chocolate...;)

Miss Clawdy

Well that misses the point altogether which isn't so much the poll but the only question posed in the initial thread by the thread starter, which was:

"Which do you feel is more important and why????"

So in this case milk would have to be the more important for the very reason you said and ergo Sun would have to be the more important.

RCA was just the chocolate at the end of the day.

But there's some mighty nice chocolate to be found. ;)

Ok, point taken....

:lmfao::lmfao:Interesting way to compare Elvis at sun and rca to Milk and choloclote.

Unchained Melody

How many have you had? :D

I've sunk a few Stella Artois bottles this evening but I fancy trying some of this "choloclote" :D

btw when RCA re-released the sun singles on the RCA label they were referred to as "milk chocolate"
That's so obvious it aint funny.

Bad spelling there on my part
Have only had a few sips of rum on this end

Ah that last part "Milk Chocolate is good steve!! :lmfao:(y)(y)
