Which song will most likely be associated with Elvis Presley as time goes on (I've only chosen 1 song from each 'era' of his performing career)?? Why is this your choice?????

The King's Queen

I chose "Hound Dog" because it seems as if even people who know very little about Elvis know that he sang that song.

Dear Elizabeth,

I don't know if I can really do it.

"Hound Dog" because of what is represents.

I always loved "Suspicious Minds" so much, loving the tune, since I can remember.

"American Trilogy" is such a wonderful song, Elizabeth.

If pressed, "Suspicious Minds" however, when I discovered the message boards around two years ago, I played "American Trilogy" over and over, lol.

Hehe, my answer is mute! ;)

Hound Dog is far and away the song most associated with Elvis Presley. Especially when speaking to the general public at large.

The poll doesn't ask you what song was written by him that he will be most remember for. It only asks what song is most associated with him as an artist.

Unfortunately I had to vote for Hound Dog as being the song most associated with Elvis by the general public......but they are wrong. Hound Dog was the song that launched him into fame but he evolved from that song into something that was fantastic and it clouds what he eventually became....a talent so unique and special that no one will even be his equal and because of that song, some will ever see it.

You're correct, Getlo.

Yes, all three are cover versions but if I did have to choose one it would have to be 'Suspicious Minds'. Would I actually be correct in saying that Elvis mostly recorded cover tunes by other artists during his career? He very seldom (at least in my opinion) recorded original material. Even some of his biggest hits (at least in the early years) were hits by other singers before Elvis recorded them.

This is true Mr. Tony. I was only interested in the most associated tune with the EP image, not his best original tune or EP's favorite tune (but these are great topics for other threads) .... only the one that immediately reminds a person, fan or not, of EP when it is heard on the radio, tv or in the media.

Well, you could argue that Hound Dog is the song that launched Elvis into infamy, LOL.

Because his performance of that song on Milton Berle did draw a ton of criticism and disapproving hot air.

Well, I for one don't agree that a cover version can't be a signature song for an artist. Fats Domino didn't write Blueberry Hill, and he didn't record it first. Janis Joplin didn't write Piece of My Heart, and didn't record it first, but that's a signature song for her. The same with Aretha Franklin and Respect.

If anyone doesn't think those songs are signature songs for those artists, I'll just have to disagree.

Everyone knows Elvis sang that one. BTW what songs did Elvis record that were not covers?

The songs people like Leiber and Stoller, Claude Demetrius and Otis Blackwell wrote for him.

Perkins' version of Blue Suede Shoes did better on the charts than Elvis', but I agree that the general public thinks of that as an Elvis song.

Maybe because Perkins had so little success on the pop charts after that, and is probably the least well known of the Sun artists.

I chose Hound Dog, personally I prefer Suspicious Minds , ..

Where i came from ( indonesia ) thats what they play when someone request a song from Elvis over and over and oh second to that was ' Kiss Me Quick' , I would think that they would have more records available BUT in some remote place and town even CD player dont exist .

Also..
Hound Dog is very famous even to non Elvis fan and those knew very little of him..

By the way ..

It's definately hound dog although there is also that's all right, heartbreak hotel, All shook up, love me tender, teddy bear, blue suede shoes, jailhouse rock that are well known.

Are you lonesome tonight and can't help falling in love are well known as well
I believe it's now or never is Elvis biggest selling single worldwide.

Suspicious minds and Burning love from his later career

but it's got to be hound dog just listen to the crowd arupt for those 30 second versions of hound dog during those concerts.

If you were in a car on August 16, 1977 and had the radio on they were ALL playing Love Me Tender. I can remember the DJ's talking about it in a stunned state of shock, and they were all reaching for Love Me Tender,no matter what station you turned to.:blush::blink:

I remember the "E! channel 25 most"... well, don't remember the title right, but in that tv show Hound Dog was selected as the must representative Elvis' song. I voted here for Suspicious Minds because I see many Elvis fans, (at least in this forum), are late 60s and 70s fans, so... But I consider Hound dog as Elvis' signature. Who wouldn't think in that 50s E wiggling his legs?

Suspicious Minds

funnily enough my grandma still does the twist at every opertunity a bit of elvis and away she goes lol starnge but i do suppose it was the dance of the 50's and 60's trust chubby checker to bring out that one

ehollier

I recently read something about Elvis and the Twist. A music critic was talking about Jailhouse Rock and the terrific production number to the title song and said that Elvis had been dancing by himself for 3 years before the Twist was introduced to teenages around the country. I thought that this was sort of funny since Elvis was the conventional dancer.

I think the 50s rocker Elvis is the signature image. When people voted on the Elvis stamp, 50s Elvis trounced Aloha Elvis in the voting.

I know 70s Elvis is very popular with Elvis fans, but I don't think the general public has the same view of that timeframe.

Only because the 70s image they chose as an option was terrible.

If you ask most non-fans - and even fans - the image that first springs to mind is the jumpsuited star.

We'll have to disagree. The 50s Elvis image in the stamp voting wasn't exactly a work of art, either.

IMO 70s Elvis is widely perceived as Elvis in decline, a parody of himself.

yup there is a video of elvis dancing to the twist its chibby checker singing it but elvis is the one dancing the twist i beleive everyone knows the jumpsuit elvis its a trade mark no one even remembers what elvis was like in the 50's unless they are fans they remember the classic songs but not the image

While "Hound Dog" is not my personal favorite Elvis song, yet for the public it is more recognizable than the other two. To be sure all three are classics, but in order to answer the question, I selected Hound Dog.

I will say however, every time I saw Elvis live in the 70's he gave Hound Dog a very good treatment.

Although a great performance, An American Trilogy did very little for ELvis in the charts back in the 70s. Therefor it is featured on very little mainstream releases (and not very wellknown among the general public).

Then the Suspicious Minds and Hound Dog are left in the mix. Perhaps Suspicious Minds is the better, more broadcasted song on the radio, because of it's contemporary sound.

But Hound Dog is one of those songs that put the world up side down. The fact that Elvis performed it during most of all his concerts from the early years to his final one, should say enough.

So I go for Hound Dog.
