We all know that every show was filmed in it's entirety. Not counting rehearsals......it's like EPE and whoever else don't care about us fans and what we want. They keep releasing some things that we already have.I hate to think that before it's over with that we will see the The King with his own line of toliet paper.
I hope we see both TTWII and On Tour on some special edition DVD some day soon.
Hopefully while we all are still living.

For the zillionth time: EPE does NOT own the TTWII or EOT footage. They have no control over it. Whatever is done with the footage (if anything) is strictly in the hands of Turner/MGM/Warner (or whatever that corporate entity is these days).

EPE don't own the footage!!
Every show was not filmed in its entirety either.
Outtakes are available if you look hard enough.

Exactly. It's been said over and over and over that EPE do not own this footage and they have absolutely no control over when or if it will even be released.

I see the point there.
But if they look at the recent sells of the Aloha set and the 1968 comeback special dvdsets and how well they sold, you would think they would release it in a style like that and see how it does...
TTWII SE was not marketed well, had no outtakes in 2001 and it aired on Turner Classic Movies before it was released for sale- all of this made it a poor seller when it was put up for sale.
EOT is more than likely being held up because of the poor showing of TTWII.
They also may think the longer they wait-the more it has us wanting it-which they may think adds up to better sales.
Someone just gave me the recent 2 disc set of TTWII SE with the original theatrical version and the dozen "never before seen outtakes" added- I was disappointed. Many of those never before seen outtakes had been seen-such as "Sweet Caroline" "I Just Can't Help Believing" "I've Lost You" etc they were in the original theatrical release. Also "Walk a Mile in my Shoes" from "The Lost Performances" Why call them "never before seen" and disappoint people? Makes no sense.

Yes, they will. EPE is waiting to drive fans crazy by making us wait... when the outtakes comes out, we all run to stores and get them. Or at least EPE is hoping for that. What may happen if EPE don't take out the outtakes, is that Youtube, or other site, will win this race. We may get those videos like EOT with nice quality for free. :hmm:

Er, no they were not. Not for TTWII or EOT.

Why? The SE of TTWII was far superior to the original, and gave a better sense of the buildup to the show, the rehearsal process and gave greater insight into those who backed Elvis on stage. The original film was ruined by that stupid sequence showing the British fans, and talking heads popping up every few minutes. In the SE, once Elvis was on stage, he stayed on stage. The main criticism of the SE is that it was shorter than the original.
Fact is, EOT will not be released as it will simply be a loser of a project. It couldn't possibly make any money, and would be a financial disaster.

I think its like this. When much of the footage is released of Elvis and theres not much of anything left it will see the light of day. Its the last piece of footage besides ttwii of Elvis in his prime, its a goldmine, and they are holding on to it imo.

Agreed Getlo. TTWII SE will always be sentimental to me as it was the first documentary i seen of Elvis , and the first time I seen him perform. (y)
Heck if we would just get something like the complete Hampton Roads concert or Buffalo or both on one disc that would be a GREAT release IMO!

I can't say because I don't have the new 2 disc set, i do have ttwii se on dvd, and the lost performances dvd and all outtakes available, but they really think or must think atleast Elvis fans aren't that smart but we are. We know whens somethings been released before and when it hasn't.
But I think you are right, the sells of ttwii se hurt the chances of seeing a eot project anytime soon atleast, and they are going to wait, it was stupid for TCM to air ttwii se before it was on dvd in the first place imo.

TTWII and EOT will be released - I'm pretty sure about that as they don't have that much unreleased material left in the can.
On the one hand EPE doesn't own the video rights but on the other it could be an aim to co-release an audio and video project of these documentaries. I.e. a cd box from bmg and a DVD box from warner, somewhen when we will have waited long enough to storm the stores...
I agree to the point that both companies compeed with the net - as all companies do - but, honestly, wouldn't any real fan prefer a release in some great quality?!
Have a nice day,

I think if it is "marketed correctly", does have some good remastered outtakes it could sell. Perhaps a complete overhaul like TTWII SE with remastered concert footage used to give it a whole new feel and look- then have the original EOT included -perhaps it could turn a nice profit.
The marketing for TTWI SE in 2001 was next to nothing. (My brothers are huge Elvis fans also they did not even know that it had been revamped with new footage and aired on TCM-let alone that it was now available on DVD until I showed them I had recorded it on VHS in 2001).
The campaign I would invision would be along the lines of Elvis 30#1s which truely was a good marketing effort. That effort helped make 30#1s a great sales success worldwide.
But as I said the terrible way TTWII SE was marketed and released-left a lasting impression on those who make these kind of decisions. Of course they will never admit that their own poor planning had a hand in TTWII SE not doing well-heaven forbid that they admit they may have erred.
SleepyJack

I think with the right marketing it could sell very well, but I guess at the end of the day that decision will be a business one and a matter of the old profit and loss account. I would be quite happy for now if they agreed to remaster "Elvis on tour" and release it through FTD...so at the very least the fans would be able to buy it........whole shows and outtakes etc. would be incredible...but I`m not holding my breath!

Who do you ultimately lay the blame on for how poorly that was handled? All you need is 2 weeks in Marketing 101 and you would know NOT to do it this way. Somebody got paid the big bucks when they should be wearing a dunce hat.:blink::blink:

well my opinion about the marketing strategy for TTWII is that it was bad. Ken made a good point about how great the maketing for Elvis 30 #1 hits was. I think if they pull out all the stops to promote a special edition Elvis on Tour all the money they would spend on advertising they still wouldn't make all their money back or make much of a profit as their isn't much of a demand for Elvis concert documentaries at the present time. I liked the special edition of TTWII much better that the original version and I hope if Elvis on tour ever got the same treatment that it would include all and any additional songs plus the interview where Elvis is talking about his hollywood career.
I agree that it was stupid to show TTWII on t.v. right before they released it.
I have a question for everyone how do you think Elvis on Tour stacked up against other music documentaries of the time. How does Elvis on tour fare against 1969 Rolling Stones documentary Gimme Shelter? How about Wood Stock?, What about Led Zeppelin 1976 The song remains the same? or 1978 the Band's the Last Waltz?

It won't work. The cost of remastering TTWII for the SE was into the millions. In the case of EOT, the costs of:
* finding and sourcing the material
* editing it into presentable fashion
* paying people to do the above
* royalties for the musicians involved
* general marketing
... are simply too much to warrant a proper official release. The best we can hope for it maybe a cleaned-up (ie basically remastered) version on DVD, coupled with perhaps the '72 stuff from The Lost Performances.
Yes, the fact that TTWII was on pay TV the week before its release was a stupid move, but it had little effect on sales. Very few fans would have taped it to keep without buying it on a proper DVD.
And 95% of the people who'd buy it are fans, the rest would be the general public. For EOT to return even a slight profit, it would have to sell in the millions on DVD. And that ain't gonna happen, even if we all promise to buy it.
The campaign I would invision would be along the lines of Elvis 30#1s
That was a CD. A DVD is a whole other ball game.

I have seen all of these, and have them all on DVD, except the Zeppelin one. They are better and more professional documentaries than EOT.
EOT was great for fans, and is a fine film, but as a documentary per se, it wasn't all that great. Aside from a few interview snippets, there was no real insight into Elvis' life or where he was at in '72.
And yes, I know EOT won the Golden Globe in '72 for Best Documentary, but look what it was up against.

For those that don't know:
Elvis On Tour tied with the documentary Walls of Fire for best documentary at the 1973 Golden Globes. It was a feature about the Mexican Revolution.
Other nominees that year:
Marjoe: an Oscar-winning film about the life of US evangelist Marjoe Gortner (1944 - ).
Russia: about the Soviet Union, obviously.
Sapporo Orinpikku: about the Sapporo Winter Olympics.
The Golden Globe for Best Documentary was only awarded between 1972 and 1977. The 1973 ceremony was held on January 28th.

Its a fantastic documentary.... personally I like it better than TTWII ..
something about it ,...some parts of it are actually quite funny...
Don't see why it wouldnt sell, packaged as a special edition.... I mean
even if they tidy it up a bit :hmm:
You could give the 'won't sell' argument about most of the Elvis movies that
have been released on DVD. Elvis has loads of fans all over the world that
would buy EIT if it came out (y)
TTWII is already on DVD - both versions. A sloppy job was done though as they
didnt even bother to do anything with the sound... they just left it mono, which

You could give the 'won't sell' argument about most of the Elvis movies that have been released on DVD.
No, you couldn't.
The scripted movies don't have royalties attached. The material does not have to be sourced. The remastering for each one wasn't that expensive. There are no costs of editing the material, as the movie already exists as a whole. Aside form trailers, there was no extra footage. And each of them sold well enough to make a small profit for each of the studios involved. But that's only because the costs of releasing them were minimal.
Elvis has loads of fans all over the world that would buy EIT if it came out
Yes, but not enough to cover the costs of a proper release of EOT!
It is simply too expensive.
The only way EOT will ever be released is if Turner Corp decides to run at a huge loss and get it out there. Think that will ever happen? Not a chance.

If Turner can't make money off it, EPE couldn't either.
It is cost-prohibitive ... a losing project. No money in it.
And EPE, as we all know, is tight as a fish's arse.
