One of the most underrated songs from the underrated album Elvis Now.
I think so, I just for the first time lastnight heard this song on the Fool album from '73. The note Elvis hits at the end is incredible.
The whole Now album is spectacular IMO, Until its Time For You To Go, Padre, We Can Make The Morning, Lady Maddonna Jam, its all so great.
Really love the jam session of Lady Madonna wow what a hit that would have been had her recorded that song.

Lady Madonna wasn't even on Now. And it wouldn't have been a hit. It's a Beatles song, one of their most underrated.

Actually it was Mr. Getlo used on the Alternate Now Album anyways ;)
And just because it was underrated for the Beatles don't mean it would have been for Elvis too.

Where Did They go Lord is also another favorite of mine as is rags to riches. Just love the version from December 31st 1976. !!(y)(y)(y)
I always thought the song Fool was a song kind of personal to Elvis about how a man lost his woman he didn't appreciate her etc...so sad :'(

Bradley, I think the confusion starts with all the FTD releases and that sort of thing. I have to agree...when I saw yor first post I thought "What?" Everytime there is mention of an older album I go right to the original release..which is different from the FTD's. Hope that helps.....:blink:
I like many of the songs on that lp.However I think overall you have to view it as a letdown at the time it was released.Elvis came charging back as a viable artist after those dreadfull movie years. From Elvis In Memphis and Elvis Country were two masterpieces.Elvis Now is basically a collection of material just tossed together for the sake of having product to sell. This lp and Love Letters basically were steps backwards for him after his resurgance. The quality of his studio material along with his enthusiasm to record burned out so quickly.I wish Elvis hadnt recorded some of that stuff on Elvis Now.For me some of the stuff just didnt suit him and wasnt the direction he should have taken musically.Unfortunately this was the case for all of his later studio efforts. Most of the time Elvis' talent was wasted on the material he was performing. Many of the 70's studio cuts were of subpar caliber and beneath him.

"Three Corn Patches" is an entertaining song to say the least.
Jak sums up what the progressive rock press would typically write: uninspired, lackluster, below par, boring, flat, not rock 'n roll enough..
I suppose that some of these tracks are more of a thing for those who have really tried to get to know and understand Elvis better, or at least have taken some effort to do so. Some of it is so emotional and he really revealed a part of himself.
Promotional work and production was kind of a let-down though, sloppy work.

What exactly did he reveal about himself in three corn patches? It all just comes down to Elvis performing weak material. It's just a simple fact.Add his uninspired vocals and you get a double whammy.Elvis Now just isnt a coherent effort with an artistic theme.Just listen to From Elvis In Memphis to understand my point. If you study the tracks to get to know Elvis better, you will discover just how bored he was with the whole recording process at that time.He was finished with it.

I didn't intend to point at "Three Corn Patches" as a song revealing his deepest sorrow and fears. However I did describe it as "an entertaining song".
The tracks from mid-1973 have some charm - although his vocals are not as fiery or explosive, they are warm and mellow.
Tender songs with some emotional quality are to be found among his work from the early seventies (not just having this album in mind) such as "Padre", "Fool", "Where Do I Go From Here?", "It's A Matter Of Time", "I Miss You".. They worked better for me (in other words, had more to offer) than "Burning Love", for example. Maybe that's just because I found a resonance in them reflecting something of my own inner being.
Lacking an artistic theme is what I had explained by pointing out sloppy work on promotion and production, but if lonely mournful down-and-out songs are forming a coherent whole, then it's just what was on his mind at the time. This was not 1957.
And err, should I not be understood too well in some cases, please keep in mind that English is not my native tongue and therefore it may simply not be at the level of other members around here.

I agree with youre thoughts here. One of the reason's Elvis has such broad appeal is the diversity of his output. He recorded something at one time or another that appeals to many people.

I agree with you Jak. "Three Corn Patches is an entertaining song...so was "I've Got A Thing About You Baby". Elvis was capable of soooo much more than 2 throw-away songs like those. After hearing "From Elvis In Memphis" "Back In Memphis" and "Elvis Country", songs such as those 2 are a let down compared to what we had been hearing from him.:blush:

An interesting point there actually.
Being a predominantly Elvis in the 70's enthusiast, it's interesting to hear the viewpoint of those fans who were collecting the LP's at the time they came out and got to hear the material in chronological order.
I'd be interested to hear about your original impressions of Elvis' last 2 studio albums as to the way his choice of recording material was progressing over the course of the 70's.
Thanks.
"I'd be interested to hear about your original impressions of Elvis' last 2 studio albums as to the way his choice of recording material was progressing over the course of the 70's"
I distinctly remember buying "From Elvis Presley BLVD" when it came out originally.I loved the cover of that lp.I rushed home to play it with incredible expectations.Once I gave it a spin it left me scratching my head.Except for a few tracks it just didnt do it for me.I was very young but already a very enthusiastic fan.My youth surely played a part in forming my opinion of that lp.However I still think that lp was very poor.I think it's full of tracks that Elvis never should have wasted his time on.To many songs that should have been left to the Vegas lounge singers.Other than Elvis Country I personally dont think Elvis released any good lp's in the 70's.Some good tracks here and there, but no great lp's start to finish.

Actually, no. Danny Boy was strongly rumoured to have been performed live for years, so when it came out, it was no real shock.

You won't hear Where Did they Go Lord live at all, as he never did it.

As Jerry Scheff said of this song: "No matter which way you slice it, s**t is still s**t". That says it all. The song was crap.

I actually have spent a good deal of time in the last 24 hours pulling out all of my Lp's from the 70's. Then...I got the huge console stereo up and working. It was absolutely incredible to hear him on this thing back in the 70's. I've played several of them, and Jak is right..."Elvis Country" was the last LP of the 70's that was great through Side1 and Side 2. ALL of the LP's after that one had 2, occasionally 3, good songs. The rest are very forgetable. Looking back..that wasn't a huge problem with me, I would listen to any and every thing just biding my time til the next concert or Vegas trip. For the fans in the 70's that were not able to see him these LP's had to be terrible letdown.:blink::blink:

I agree 100% Brad!! (y)
Although the ELVIS-NOW and ELVIS (including FOOL) albums were simply a mish-mash of left over tracks, I am personally quite fond of both of these albums. Like you, I have always thought songs like PADRE, WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE, WE CAN MAKE THE MORNING, SYLVIA, etc. included on both of these albums are very underrated songs and definitely deserve more attention!!! (Of course, I can always do without HEY JUDE...for some reason, I just cannot stand that song even with Elvis singing it...)
These are 2 albums that I would like to see re-done in the FTD classic albums series sometime down the road....although with the upcoming LOVE LETTERS FTD including SYLVIA on it, perhaps that is a sign (as we have discussed before) that ELVIS-NOW is not on FTD's radar for an upgrade... :hmm:

You are so right with your statments there Jak but it goes back to Colonel not wanting to pay songwriters royalties etc for the good top notch songs from the 70's so elvis got subpar stuff much of the time.
Though nothing can change history now i take enjoyment in much of his work as theres no need in getting distraught about what might have been...:king:

In all honesty I may be completely loopy, but Elvis did reveal quite a lot about himself in his music from the 70's. "It's Midnight" or "Pieces Of My Life" are just two examples (the list could go on)..
As for myself, I practically ruined my copies of "From Elvis Presley Blvd" and "Elvis In Concert" just by using them so often and intensively.
I have to disagree with Jerry Scheff on "Three Corn Patches". As long as you don't present it as the most meaningful song in the world it's okay - or what personal thing did Elvis reveal in his million-selling "Hound Dog" (don't see you complaining about that one)?
The only way for you people to measure a song's quality seems to be by commercial success. That seems a bit superficial, but everyone's entitled to have an opinion.
Even though Elvis' nature was different from mine (no two people can be 100% alike of course, but you know what I mean), I totally understand and experience what he felt. I think the song "Padre", for example, is best to be described as a desperate call for love and the need to cleanse the soul by bringing this grief to a climax - that is the end of the song, the high note. Don't you think it's an underrated gem?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUrL9lnI5pI
The video seems to have been posted by a fan from the Netherlands using pictures to create a short clip. Keep in mind that volume varies on Youtube and that it may require you to adjust your speakers or whatever it is you use.
I just can't get enough of these songs. They reflect something that's inside of me. As for Elvis, he transcended pure technique just by meaning and feeling every word of the song(s) mentioned above.
