Yeah, that always gave me the willies. Only kidding. By the way, I'm glad that you called it a "scene" rather than an "act" which I've seen elsewhere and seems to...well, I'll let that go.

That was a really funny clip Matt...thanks for posting. I always wondered what was going on between Elvis and Charlie in the pictures of that time.

Charlie teased and aggravated Elvis all through both songs. Some of his expressions reminded me of Marty Feldman without the "googly" eyes. I think I saw Elvis move his elbow at Charlie at one point to make him quit. You have to give Elvis credit for being able to continue on with the songs.

Charlie was always there to put a smile on Elvis when he needed it most ! I find it surprising how Elvis remembered about all of the dialogue from the song but in Omaha and Rapid City he didn't say most of the speaking parts...but he looked worse here as in Omaha....

Wonder what rehearsal he was referring to when he said they had a rehearsal earlier this week..but I didn't show up...Were they probably going to rehearse for the upcoming filming by CBS you think Matt?

Not sure, but the show looks to be from June 77.... so possibly?

The other thing is why didn't Elvis and Charlie do this routine in the CBS show?

He was referring to rehearsals in general. By this time, Elvis never rehearsed at all.

Thought so, still... why didn't they do this routine for the CBS Show?

Probably because he was being filmed for a television special. Thank God that they didn't do it....it would've been very embarrassing......

Agreed.....on both counts. There was a mic stand there for the guitar...why not a mic stand with a boom for Elvis to use?

Very unprofessional if you ask me.....

What if is was considered unprofessional? Elvis always broke the rules and acted more human than other entertainers. That's what made him Elvis and special. I wasn't at all offended at this silly display on stage, I found it funny and entertaining and nothing "gay" about it at all. I don't feel it would have spoiled the EIC filming at all.

I think it was pure fun and I like it.
If we are talking about professionalism, then I'd say in Elvis' current
condition it wasn't professional at all to go on the stage in the first place.

Yes, I agree with you Tommy. We are Elvis fans though and enjoy the humor and such. My point was that I was thankful that the entire non-fan group never got their hands on it. I think they would have a mockery of it...which Elvis did NOT deserve.:blink::blush::blink:

i agree and its good to see that no matter what health problems elvis was having he could still laugh and have some fun and charlie and the fans seemed to be having a good laugh i think it was not done for the eic because i don't think it was rehersed just a spur of the moment thing

While on the topic of Are You Lonesome Tonight its hard to think of a complete version elvis did without messing it up.

The last one I can think of would be Hampton Roads Va from April 9th 1972 from Elvis On Tour..can anyone recall a complete serious version from after that date?

Actually it was not spur of the moment. This routine was done in a number of shows in '76 and '77.

I never did understand why sometimes Charlie would hold the microphone for him in the first place. Very weird.

From EIC, the performances of Are You Lonesome Tonight was pretty bad in Omaha June 19th 1977..but the Rapid City June 21st 1977 version wasn't quiet bad, just when Elvis started goof'in up the talking part.

Though the Omaha version was quiet sad Elvis just freezes towards the end like he just forgot what he was even doing.(n)

Agreed, Elvis was caught up in the moment. He was nervous performing in front of the camera's. As big a star as Elvis was he still got the jitters in front of an audience, on this occasion the camera's were there to.

Elvis was capable of giving poor performances but you have to cut the guy some slack, he had to know the words to AYLT but on this occasion he dropped the ball

I think you are right Matt. The camera's made him nervous, and in addition to that Elvis was bound to know how he looked. I give him kudo's for even doing it at all.:notworthy:notworthy:king:

but just pondering here,do you think this ACT was planned because elvis was scared that he might screw the lyrics up to ayltn, and having this act as a 'PLAN B' kind of thing, might be good fun,and hope that the audience woudnt notice it so much:hmm:

I also think Elvis just forgot the words from nervousness as any other entertainer has done from time to time and then he tried to make a joke out of it. Probably the cameras didn't help.

I'm sure as Rosanne said he was very conscious about the way he looked and worried about how his fans would react to him.

This all may have played a role in it..but I'm sure the medication that was running through his body didn't help matters. Especially in Omaha!!
