Hi everyone how are you all doing?
In 2002 there was a t.v. special called Elvis lives that aired around Thanksgiving I really liked the special compared to 2007 Viva Las Vegas
Here is my reasons
Chris Issak being a big Elvis fan was a good choice to host the show he knows quite a bit about Elvis etc.
I feel this did a good job for Elvis image having famous people from all walks of life talking about him and praising him. Naomi Campbell, Sarah Jessica Parker and Britney Spears say Elvis was the sexiest man that had ever seen.
I liked Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton and B.B. King talking about Elvis and talking about his tremendous inspiration and influence on other artists and are culture. I especially liked when B.B. Kink said ''to me they didn't make a mistake when they said he was the king''
I also thought the artists covers were good the only one I didn't like was stuck on you by Dave Matthews, my favorite was Chris Issak and Leann Rimes dueting on Devil in Disguise.
What I didn't like about the special was people were talking like Elvis copied black artists music note for note and used Big Momma Thorton houndog as an example but Elvis version of the song is totally different from hers, his sounds like a precursor to hard rock while her original just sounds like a blues song, just like when Janis Joplin covered Ball and chain it may have been a cover but it sounded different than Ms.Thorton's. The rolling stones did the same thing with talking slow blues songs and making them blues rock numbers when they first came here and are never called on it or called copy cats.
I also didn't like that they didn't mention the white country influence in early rock n' roll it was called rockabilly for a reason, take for example Elvis country flavored versions of that's alright mama and Blue moon of Kentucky totally different from Bill Monroe and Arthur Crudup, take in to account all the other country flavored rock songs from the period as well.
I also didn't like what Bono had to say on the special he really annoys me with all his talking in metaphors I can't understand what he says.
I think the show really missed Robert Plant and Jimmy Page but overall I thought it was a good show.
In 2007 we got Viva Las Vegas hosted by Journalist Elizabeth Vargas who to me didn't come across being an Elvis fan or knowing anything about him I thought we were on a roll with good documentaries because of Elvis lives and Elvis by the Presley's but this was extremely disappointing it was suppose to be a documentary about Elvis performing in Las Vegas and his performance there, how he changed Vegas and all but was just a career overview nothing we haven't seen before. (we already got other artist singing Elvis hits and we've seen enough of that over the years) What this special should have been was Elvis playing Vegas etc. and not just another simple bio, It shoud have included the TCB band members, Linda Thompson etc. I feel it would have been better if it had them involved in it.
What are your opinions on the 2 specials did you like them? why or why not
