I would like to discuss the Elvis on Stage live album with everyone today I know this album is popular with fans I like it as well. I like the albums tracklist for the most part but there are a couple of things I don't like about it
Here is the the track list in no particular order
Polk Salad Annie
Wonder of you
Release me
Yesterday ( I think another song could have been included instead because this was included on the previous live album)
Walk a mile in my shoes
Proud Mary
C.C. Rider
Sweet Caroline
Runaway (same as for the song ''Yesterday'')
Le it be me
I think 2 more songs could have been included on the album to give us more songs any ideas 2 more contemporary covers to include on the album what are your choices?
To replace ''Yesterday'' with a contemporary (as in 1970) song what would your choice be? I would love to hear them
Another choice to replace ''runaway'' another early 60's rocker what would be your choice?
I think this would be fun to discuss I hope to get a lot of feedback on this
I will enjoy hearing all of your thoughts and opinions on this

Hi Brian, yes, love this album too, anyway just need to clarify this: the songs "Yesterday" and "Runaway" were not included on Elvis previous live album. Yes, they were recorded during the '69 Vegas season, but they didnīt made it into the From Memphis To Vegas from Vegas To Memphis double L.P. set a.k.a Back in Memphis-Elvis in Person.
This is the track list of Elvis in Person:
Blue Suede Shoes - Johnny B. Goode - All Shook Up - Are You Lonesome Tonight - Hound Dog - I Can't Stop Loving You - My Babe - Mystery Train / Tiger Man - Words - In The Ghetto - Suspicious Minds - Can't Help Falling In Love
Being that clear, no I would not leave out Runaway as I believe is one of the best tracks from the album and it hadnīt been released prior the On Stage LP in anyway, on the other hand I had never liked Yesterday, neither with Elvis neither the original Beatles recording, (in fact, I hate it) plus, while all of the covers Elvis did in On Stage are in one way or another stronger performances than the originals, Yesterday doesnīt add anything to the original Beatles most boring single. I would had changed that for either Kentucky Rain or Donīt Cry Daddy.
I would not use Suspicious Minds for On Stage as that did was used in Elvis previous life album.
P.S. I would just have loved Elvis doing Delta Woman, James Burton says they did rehearsed it for the album but in the end they never played it live. That was a good song for Elvis to do, Yesterday, ah! man you better do Do the Clam again lol. Nothing against the Beatles, love them, but not that one song.

This one is one of my absolute all time favorite albums!! I remember the day it came out, I think I nearly wore it out that 1st day. Give me a bit to think on this, but I have to agree 100% with ROR. NEVER replace "Runaway"..it's one of the highlights.(y)(y)

i'm not familiar with Delta Woman, i did a little research [not very intensive] and found Delta Lady sung by Joe Cocker - i like this song. i would have replaced yesterday, for sure, and it was a slow song, so maybe he could sing one of his 50's ballads like Love Me. or he could do How the web was Woven or Do You know who I am? if he was set on doing a Beatles cover, how about Julia or And I love Her?
as long as we're playing Fantasy Shows here, i wish he'd do more 50ish songs, but the "obscure"/lesser played ones - like Kiss Me Quick, For the Millionth and the Last Time, Ain't that Loving you, Baby. personally, i wouldn't mind even hearing Because of Love!

Hi rhythmknights how are you doing?
I was thinking that the concept for the On stage was Elvis singing contemporary covers Elvis didn't sing any of his old hits or songs on the album
I was also thinking if the album was expanded to 12 songs what would be your choice for the extra two cover songs? I really would like to know your opinion

Hi Utmom2008
I agree with you about yesterday it is a very overrated song
I think it's an okay simple ballad but their are many ballads that are better
I don't think it warrants 5,000 cover versions and a place on the 100 greatest songs of all time list.

Thats a Neil Diamond song from the early 70s.
I have to agree with Utmom-Runaway is to cool to replace.
And in the place of "Yesterday" I also would have loved "He Aint Heavy Hes My Brother" or perhaps the Beatles "Let it Be"

Agreed on Let it Be was another McCartney ballad from his Beatles era that would had fited Elvis style far better than Yesterday, and is much stronger song anyways.
About two more songs to made it a 12 tracj album, I would have also liked hear Elvis doing "Hush"another Joe South song, that one algong with "Delta Lady" would have made of the album less Vegas and a more southern Rock album.
What about Elvis doing a Rolling Stones cover: "Honky Tonk Women", James Burton licks would have been delightful on that tune.

Although I do like the Mamas and the Papas and I do like Monday Monday I canīt see Elvis doing that one.
"Shakin all Over", that would have been a classic if Elvis ever recorded it. I can see Elvis doing it either '61 Little Sister like or '66 Down in the Alley like, but sure thing with the On Stage sound that song could have made it well on my top 20 Elvis recordings.
I also belive that his '69 classic rendition of "Stranged in My Own Home Town" recoded at the American Studios, could have been a great live number if Elvis ever incorporated to his show, a great opener even.

I believe that it is such a tragedy that Elvis did not record more blues in the 60's and 70's. He had the voice and the rhythem, and was steeped in R & B as a child. What ashame he went to a more "pop" sound after the army. He could have recorded Otis Redding, Bill Whithers, Barry White, Al Green and done such an incredible job not only singing these songs, but also making them his own as he was so apt to do.
As far as ballads, I absolutely love "Your Song" which was recorded by Elton John. Elvis' voice would have been phenomenal!!!!

Hi there, hope you're doing fine.
About Imagine, I do enjoy that tune in Lennon's voice as I do enjoy the whole Imagine album yet, although some people might kill me, I think it is an overated song, it only works because it is Lennon, as much as only Trouble does work with Elvis lol.
I dont know really, that song is pretty much a statement on Lennonīs policial ideals, those that were not to much of the like of Presley, although I could be wrong.
Apart from Imagine, I can easely hear Elvis doing Lennon's Jelaous Guy(y)
and Nobody Loves You When Your Down and Out(y). And from the Beatles era: Day Triper! (y)I like that one, but please, no Yesterday Elvis (n)
There's this song by Diamond, canīt remember the name, maybe you can help me remember, Brother's Salvation Show? I would have liked Elvis doing that one.

In the Ghetto is much more of a political song than Imagine you are right, what I meant is, that although Imagine's message is not that diferent from the message implied in If I Can Dream on the surface, behind the songs, In the Ghetto and If I Can Dream were related to Dr. Luther King's movement and other political stands that Elvis could relate, while Imagine was more related to certain political views that Lennon was realted to but Elvis as in his letters to the White House in '70 revealed could not. But who knows, as I sugested once in a thread that ended being erased due to some very cool people arguin whoīs smarter, maybe Elvis just wanted a badge so bad and told Nixon what he wanted to hear: Yeah sure, that Lennon, very bad incluence Sir, now, give me the badge lol.

I was thinking Raised on Rock that ''Brother Love'' and ''Play me'' were good songs by Neil Diamond. but since Elvis already covered ''Sweet Caroline'' for the On stage album I was wondering if you had any ideas for a ballad for Elvis to cover apart from those by the beatles and Neil Diamond?
I think the album would benefit from total diversity.
btw I think Elvis version of C.C. Rider is okay I think the version by the Animals is the best Iv'e heard and the later versions by Elvis were too vegas for my taste

Wow The Animals! werenīt they fantastic?
I guess Lennonīs Imagine and McCartney's Yesterday are the same as Jailhouse Rock or Love me Tender for Elvis, all of them got much better and richer stuff than that, but people just want to hear those songs over and over, until it wents as ridiculous as people judging those are their best records.
Love the Ballad of John and Yoko too, read once that he, Lennon, borrowed from Donīt be Cruel for that intro, same as he was inspired somehow on Heartbreak Hotel for Yer Blues. Antoher Lennon song that Elvis could have done just right: Out of Blue.

Elvis had a feeling for Ray Charles, I do like Elvis version of I Got A Woman much more than Rays, What'd I Say sounds fantastic with Elvis.
Now both of Elvis Ray Charles covers were uptempo songs, wonder how a ballad like Georgia on My Mind or Ruby would have sounded in Elvis voice and arrangments. Or what about Elvis doing Sticks and Stones for the On Stage album?

Hi Mr. Burrows how are you today?
I was wondering sir if you or anyone else know of any good motown ballads that Elvis could have replaced ''Yesterday'' with on the On Stage album?
I know Tracks of my tears but can't think of any other motown ballad songs I could see Elvis doing
Last night Rosanne and I spent about an hour exchanging song ideas. We even put up the YT video on those we could find. Not every song was a true "Motown" song, but every song was a true "R & B" song. Otis Redding (These Arms Are Mine), Bill Withers (Ain't No Sunshine), Al Green (Let's Stay Together), Marvin Gaye (Lets Get it On), Barry White (Can't Get Enough of Your Love)....the list is endless.

I actually am fine with te songs that are on the album...i dont spend much time doing such things as thinking about what he could've put in the setlist or such stuff..because its not going to change things a-tall so i never seen the point in that.

Very true Elizabeth...as close to Motown as you are going to get. I LOVE "Baby Love" by The Supremes, but I don't see Elvis doing that one!

No, not "Baby Love". Maybe some Gladys Knight tunes, but not the Supremes. I think he was more in line with Ray Charles than Stevie Wonder, too. I was thinking about this. Ray Charles was more soul and less pop. I know B. B. King isn't Motown, but I could hear Elvis doing "The Thrill is Gone."

Brian, there are so many, many great Motown songs - I Wish It Would Rain, Ain't Too Proud to Beg, I'm Losing You - I would have loved to have heard Elvis cover that one even though it wasn't really his style, but I wonder if he could have made it his own.
How about the song I'm Busted! :D I think Elvis would have had more fun with that in his rehearsals jamming than on stage, tho.

Actually, there is a small bit of this song from a rehearsal in the summer of 1970 and it is hilarious!!! Great choice!!!!!!!!

Yeh...I've got that too on my outtakes. I think it would have been GREAT. Wouldn't you have loved to have heard the complete "Oh Happy Day"?(y)(y)
That would have been a good one-but coincedentily that is also the song which Rick Nelson says got him booed at MSG during his set of the Rock Revival show. I think Elvis would have done HTW great.

Hi Mr. Burrows How are you?
I know that Mr. Burrows I was just thinking it would be fun to discuss and I have never liked the song ''Yesterday'' and Elvis versions don't add anything to the song. I personally like to talk about could have's and what ifs from time to time because I just happen to think it is fascinating. Elvis has been dead for 31 years if we only talk about what actually happened we are probably going to run out of things to discuss.
are your sure there isn't a song you would have liked Elvis to sing?

If we're talking contemporary songs that Elvis could have sang in 1970, top of the fantasy list for me would be Rainy Night In Georgia. That it was written by a 19 year old is just incredible.
As for the album, I love it as it is, although I prefer the original mix than the one used on the expanded/remastered version. The old mix packs far more of a punch. I might have to edit together a cd of my old tape, adding in the bonus songs from the re-mastered version at the end.

I've always loved the original LP (I never did get the CD version with extra songs, though didn't they slap the entire thing down again on the Live In Las Vegas set?) and still remember the excitement of hearing "See See Rider" for the first through thousandth time, as well as the complete bafflement that accompanied "Polk Salad Annie" (what? Pork salad? I had no idea what the song meant, or why it was there, but it was undeniably one of those moments).
There're some interesting song choices scattered throughout this thread. In general, I would've liked seeing Elvis do much more in the way of blues. To be sure, just about everything his voice touched was tinged with both blues and gospel -- he and Ray Charles had that very much in common -- but Elvis was always on fire when working his way through some good, solid blues. As but one example, "Merry Christmas, Baby" demonstrated that Elvis should have been working on a blues album in May of 1971, rather than a Christmas album and -- while we were at it -- I'd have loved to have seen him more thoroughly explore his very obvious interested in contemporary folk as revealed most fully in the (sadly, foreshortened) March, 1971 session.
And, just as I think he most naturally suited the original rural flavor of the Delta blues (the kind that also happens to be my favorite, much more so than the more urban blues that came back out of Chicago and elsewhere after it moved upriver), I think that soul and similar songs suited to Elvis in the late '60s through the '70s were more likely to have originated in Stax than Motown. Motown produced some great stuff, of course, but the sound was much more carefully controlled and layered, meticulously contrived by a bunch of perfectionists, and somehow less immediately Southern in flavor and generally lacking the more raw edge of Memphis music.
Elvis also could have done some supremely cool things, perhaps, with the kind of '70s country-rock now often referred to as 'Southern Rock.' Material by the likes of his musical offspring like Gram Parsons, and more of the swamp-rock kind of thing exemplified by Tony Joe White and Joe South, could also have been a really good choice for Elvis from about 1968 on. For that matter, I'd love to have seen further direct musical collaboration with Jerry Reed (and here's one: 1974 Stax sessions in collaboration with the late, great Isaac Hayes, or even just with Isaac as the coproducer and accomplice in arranging and A&R) and how about some of those other unrealized possibilities like the song "Fire" that this Springsteen boy was trying to get Elvis' way?
What we have is, overall, a remarkable body of work that constitutes what is probably the single most influential body of music in our time. Still, it's an interesting (if ultimately potentially frustrating) exercise to ponder exactly what might have been if a few things had lined up just a little differently. And, yeah, here I'd even include such fantasy items on my if-I-could-travel-back-in-time-and-meet-Elvis list as him working on honing his acting so he could start figuring in a wider diversity of higher quality films after he returned from the Army and playing limited tours and one-off gigs. Shoot, a major 1964 one-off or limited series of stadium concerts in Japan to tie in with the period preceding the Olympics and the massively increased awareness and popularity of Japanese culture Stateside (not to mention Elvis' enormous popularity in those islands) would be a good start, as would those Wembley gigs offered Elvis for obscene amounts of money. Oh well...these and other possibilities in parallel universes aside, he still gave pop culture quite a ride and left us quite a legacy.
Now, if only the *****s in charge had filmed (frankly,I'd happily settle for even just good audio) the July 31, 1969 show. Yeah, baby. There you go: That's The Way It Is -- with really high stakes and nerves on opening night -- shot in 1969 and Elvis On Tour filmed in all its glory on the November, 1971 tour. :D
Huh...funny: this forum automatically censors both "m orons" and "i diots"...I swear, those were the only two words I tried for the asterisked bit above, that now looks far more racy than it really is.

Actually, the real reason Rick was booed isn't what people think. The reason Rick got booed was just a case of bad timing. There were a few drunks in the audience that were being rowdy and the cops tried removing them and the surrounding audience began booing and, sadly, this coincided with Rick moving to the piano to sing "Honky Tonk Women".

Yes I have read this also-but at the time Rick himself thought that it was because he sang the Stones HTW and that spurred the song.
Even in later years he still would explain of his writing "Garden Party"
that the crowd did not want to hear him sing a non-50s non-Ricky Nelson song. When the legend becomes fact-print the legend so they say.:)

I've read that at first Rick thought it was because he was singing his old hits but after the show he was told by security the real reason for the booing, Rick then swore everyone to secrecy and began writing the song Garden Party and also telling the story of him being booed at MSG for singing new material even to his own children.
I agree Garden party is right up there with songs Rick wrote but for me the best song he wrote is Easy to be free I never really thought Garden Party would be a hit as I thought it was too mellow and was not catchy enough, to me it sounded like a song James Taylor would've recorded.
I can't see Elvis recording the song but if he did it would have an entirely different meaning.

They may have told him what had happened-but did he buy it totally?
In the book "Teenage Idol, Travelin Man" it described Rick as very upset about the incident even though he was told of the skirmish in the crowd. So that tells me he may have not accepted the explanation totally. Heres an account of the incident:
On October 15, 1971, a Rock 'n Roll Revival concert was given at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The playbill included many greats of the early rock era, including Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Bobby Rydell.
Nelson came on stage dressed in the then-current fashion, wearing bell-bottoms and a purple velvet shirt, with his hair hanging down to his shoulders. He started playing his older songs "Hello Mary Lou" and "She Belongs to Me", but then he played The Rolling Stones hit song "Honky Tonk Woman" and the crowd began to boo. While some reports say that the booing was caused by police action in the back of the audience, Nelson took it personally and left the stage. He watched the rest of the concert backstage and did not take his final bow for the finale.
As far as the song itself-it had a great hook I thought and it fit right in on the charts with its mellow sound-it was helped by the 50s rock revival of 1972. I also like "Easy to Be Free" but for me "Garden Party" told a story and was for me the best he ever wrote.

I've heard both stories but don't know which is true.
it's interesting to me that Bobby Rydell was there because I think of him as an early 60's act.
I think Traveling Man would be an excellent song of Nelson's to cover and would've sounded great on the On Stage album.
Also later period Rick Nelson for Elvis to cover would be One night stand
