Even though Elvis lived most of his entire professional life in Memphis, he only recorded there a handful of times. Which session do you feel was his best and why???

I'd have to say the sessions at the American Studios are my favorite followed by the Stax Studios at a close second.

The 1969 American Sound Sessions have got to be perhaps the greatest sessions elvis ever held.

It was to prove he still could do it one last time, kind of like when he got out of the army, and with a few number one hits from the sessions and some great songs, it was just pure magical. There is footage out there from the sessions on the dvd called rare elvis volume 1 it's pretty neat to see.

But for the purist out there i can easyily understand why they would choose the Sun days as that was the classic stuff, that started it all, that made you scream, and what attracted his fan base his first years starting out.

For the stax sessions in 73, the ones from July were weak but the work elvis did in december 73 was really great producing two complete albums etc.

Hardly. I think its one of those tunes that should have gotten airtime and not been a B-side. Another one of my B-side favorites is This is the Story -- love that song.

The American Studio's has the vote from me. Elvis at his mature peak IMO, after this I don't think Elvis really achieved the same heights in a recording studio.

Check out this page........American Studio's (http://www.furious.com/PERFECT/elvis69.html)

Sun studio for me too, the start of it all, new sound, and Elvis raw, American sound studio, can't fault it, but history was already made then.

Have to agree with you here Matt. If anything else came remotley close to these sessions I would give it to the nashville sessions of 1970.

American Sound, of course.

But the poll should have included the February and October 1976 Graceland sessions as well, as they were also done in Memphis.

The best? The Sun Sessions. Why? Because if not for those groundbreaking, trendsetting sessions everything that followed probably wouldn't have happened. Elvis the truckdriving electrician anyone?

I think Elvis recorded good songs at all three of the memphis studio's he recorded at. I am a fan of the 70's Elvis as well as the 50s and I also love several songs he recorded at the American studios. If I had to pick which
one I would pick the songs he recorded at sun. I think as a whole all of the songs he recorded there were good. The sun sessions are the most talked about and discussed recordings he ever made so that's why I would have to give the nod to sun.

For me,comparing the sun sessions and the american sessions is almost like comparing two different artists.......choose between the two??...don`t think I could.I love the sun recordings for their purity and history-making sound, not to mention the joy in his voice at that age and the excitement of his dreams coming true.....the american recordings were a different, but just as awe-inspiring part of the recorded legacy, powerful, gutsy, quality songs...you can almost feel the relief of being back from the long trials of hollywood and "Old McDonald"..........So that`s it baby...I`m up here on the fence..give me a big wave!!!

Some years ago i was very "lucky" to get hold of a "acoustic tile" from the American sound studio,It was removed from the singers booth and it was auctioned on the 16 aug 1984 by Bill Glore who owned the studio until it was demolished.
It has a signed letter by Bill (also signed on the back of the tile) and a list of other artist that recorded at the studio such as Neil Diamond etc.
The place was falling to bits just before it was pulled down and i know the tile looks a little rough! but the thought of Elvis voice bouncing off it and standing next to it while recording "Suspicious minds" "In the ghetto" "Dont cry daddy" "in memphis/Back in memphis albums" just gives me a "mega buzz"
Bill Glore did his best to keep the place going. it was a big part of Elvis history and i wish it was still around for us fans to visite. I am just glad i was lucky to get a piece of it.
